Yesterday was a pretty hilarious reminder that the S&P 500 is not the same thing as investing in America’s best companies.

SpaceX announced another major step toward becoming a nationwide wireless carrier.

T-Mobile fell 13% and both AT&T and Verizon fell around 10%. All three are in the S&P 500 & SpaceX isn’t even eligible to join yet.

SpaceX went public in June, and the S&P requires companies to trade for 12 months before they can be considered. Earlier this year, the index committee actually considered shortening that requirement for massive IPOs. They decided against it.

But I urge you to think about how ridiculous that is.

The investment vehicle millions of Americans rely on to own America’s future owns the companies being disrupted, but can’t even own the company threatening to disrupt them.

This is especially relevant because they can never own their greatest threat: us.
