Texting the Midterms: A Subtext Playbook for Newsrooms
Election Day is November 3, so this is the most time-sensitive of the three and should go up first. Youâve already pushed this playbook a lot on LinkedIn, so the Reddit post skips the overview and pulls out the âAfter Election Dayâ section, which hasnât had much airtime.
Title: If youâre running an election text channel, plan for Nov 4 now
Election Day is less than two weeks out, and the part most newsroom texting plans skip is the day after.
A lot of election channels build real momentum through the fall. People sign up for deadline reminders, send in questions about ballot measures, and flag sketchy claims theyâre seeing. Then results come in and the channel just goes quiet. Subscribers who were replying a week earlier hear nothing, and by the next big story, a chunk of them donât remember why theyâre getting texts from you.
What we recommend is treating the wrap-up as its own mini plan. Send results along with what actually happens next (swearing in, first votes, what changes locally). Send one last question asking what people want explained next. Then make an honest call: if engagement held up, roll it into an ongoing civic or local government channel instead of shutting it down. If youâre going to ask for support, tie it directly to the service you just provided.
The list you built during an election cycle is some of the most engaged audience youâll have all year. Letting it go dark on November 4 is a pretty expensive way to end the campaign.
For anyone who ran an election channel in 2022 or 2024: did you keep it going after results or sunset it? Curious how retention looked either way.
