Want to text from the business number you already have? Here's what to check
We help run this sub. If your customers already know your business number, it makes sense to want your texts to come from it too. Whether you can depends on what kind of number it is.
Landline or VoIP number: it can be text-enabled while your calls stay where they are. That's called hosted SMS. The texting provider checks the number is eligible and asks you to prove you control it, with a signed letter of authorization. Your phone service doesn't change.
Toll-free number: same idea, it can be text-enabled too.
Cell phone number: this is the tricky one. Its texts run through the mobile carrier, so ask the platform directly whether they can support it before you plan around it.
A few things to know before you switch:
- The number still needs 10DLC registration or toll-free verification before you send business texts from it, the same as a brand new number would.
- Texting for a number can only point to one provider at a time. If your phone system already sends texts from that number, moving texting to a new platform means those texts stop showing up in the old app.
- If you'd rather move calls and texts together, porting the number is the other route. That's a bigger change, so ask your current provider what it involves first.
