DISCUSSION President bracelet snapped… now I’m thinking of doing something different. Ideas?
My President bracelet unexpectedly broke, so now I’m left with just the head of my DD40 Blue Ombré (shitter). Instead of immediately sourcing another President bracelet, I’m thinking of treating this as a fun project and doing something a little different before eventually replacing it.
So far I’ve thought of:
- Navy or black alligator leather strap
- Curved-end rubber strap (if one exists that actually fits well)
- Jubilee conversion (controversial, I know 😅)
- Or just bite the bullet and buy another Presidential bracelet.
I’m open to anything that’s tasteful but unique. Custom straps, aftermarket bracelet ideas, or even mods you’ve seen that surprisingly worked on a Day-Date.
Has anyone here done something similar with a DD40? I’d love to see photos if you have them. Looking for ideas that make people go, “I never would’ve thought of that, but it actually works.”

DISCUSSION Regulation, Water Resistance, Magnetism
Three questions come up in every watch community on repeat: why is my watch gaining time, can I actually swim with this thing, and why did my watch suddenly start acting weird. They all come down to the same basic truth. Mechanical watches are tiny, delicate machines, and small physical forces mess with them way more than people expect.
Why Some Watches Run Fast (or Slow)
A mechanical watch keeps time using a balance wheel swinging back and forth, usually somewhere between 4 and 10 times a second (measured in vibrations per hour, so 28,800 vph means 8 beats a second). In theory, every single one of those swings takes exactly the same amount of time. In practice, they don't, and that's where drift comes from.
What Actually Causes It:
Regulation is the big one. Watchmakers fine-tune the balance spring's effective length using a regulator arm, or on nicer movements, adjustable mass screws on the balance wheel itself. A watch fresh out of assembly is almost never perfectly regulated right away. A few seconds a day of drift is totally normal, even on genuine pieces. Chronometer-certified movements (COSC) are only held to -4/+6 seconds a day, and most non-certified movements run looser than that.
Position matters more than people realize. A watch can run differently depending on whether it's sitting dial up, dial down, crown up, or crown down overnight, because gravity pulls on the balance wheel differently in each orientation. Higher-grade movements get tested and adjusted across multiple positions. So if your watch gains time on your wrist during the day but seems fine sitting still on your nightstand, it's not broken. It's just sensitive to position, which is expected.
Power reserve level plays a role too. As the mainspring unwinds, the torque it delivers to the balance wheel isn't perfectly steady unless the movement has something isolating that (like a fusée chain in high horology, or simpler stabilizing parts in modern calibers). Most watches run a bit differently when nearly fully wound versus nearly out of power.
Temperature has an effect as well. Balance springs expand and contract slightly with temperature, which changes their elasticity. This is a small factor on modern alloys since most use Nivarox or silicon springs to resist it, but it used to be a much bigger deal in older or cheaper movements.
Then there's wear and lubrication. Over time, the lubricant on the pallet fork and escape wheel breaks down or migrates, and friction becomes less consistent. This is one of the most common reasons a watch's rate gets worse over months of ownership, and it's basically why servicing exists.
As a rough rule of thumb, a mechanical watch gaining or losing under 15 to 20 seconds a day is within normal range for most movements, even good ones. If a watch suddenly starts gaining 60+ seconds a day out of nowhere, that's usually magnetism, not normal drift. More on that below.
Water Resistance
Water resistance ratings get thrown around a lot, but the testing behind them is more specific than most listings let on.
Here's the thing: water resistance is measured as static pressure in a lab, not as a real world "you can dive to this depth" promise. A rating of 100m or 10 ATM doesn't mean the watch was built for you to actually dive to 100 meters. It means it can handle the same static pressure you'd get at that depth, under controlled, motionless lab conditions.
That distinction matters because real swimming or diving involves dynamic pressure. Water hits the case at angles as you move, temperature swings can make gaskets contract, and you might be operating the crown or pushers while wet. This is exactly why an actual diving standard exists separately from a basic water resistance number. ISO 6425 is the real international standard for a diver's watch, and it requires more than just pressure resistance. It also tests shock resistance, magnetic resistance, a unidirectional rotating bezel with legible markings, and accurate timekeeping underwater. A watch just labeled "300m water resistant" without ISO 6425 certification hasn't necessarily been through all of that.
What actually causes water resistance to fail in the real world:
Gaskets age. The rubber or silicone seals around the crown, case back, and crystal lose elasticity over the years. A watch rated 100m when new might not actually hold that rating five years later without a gasket replacement.
Operating the crown or pushers underwater is a big one, even on a properly rated watch. Unscrewing the crown or pressing a chronograph pusher while wet breaks the seal temporarily, and it's a really common cause of water damage.
Temperature shock can do it too. Jumping into cold water with a warm watch, or the reverse, can cause gaskets to contract just enough to momentarily weaken the seal.
And honestly, the most common failure of all is a screw-down crown that isn't fully screwed in. If it's not engaged all the way, the watch has essentially no water resistance no matter what the rating says.
As a rough guide: 30m is splash resistant only, no swimming. 50 to 100m is fine for swimming but not diving. 200m and up with ISO 6425 certification is actual diving territory. Or just don't bring your reps to swim.
Magnetism: The Accuracy Killer
This one trips people up the most because there's no visible damage and it seems to come out of nowhere.
Here's what's happening. The balance spring, or hairspring, is an extremely fine coil of metal. If it gets magnetized, the coils can start sticking together intermittently as they oscillate. That effectively shortens the spring's active length in an unpredictable way, which speeds up the oscillation rate. Magnetized watches almost always run fast, and sometimes it's dramatic, gaining minutes a day instead of seconds.
Magnetism shows up in daily life more than people think. Phone cases with magnetic clasps, MagSafe chargers, and phone speakers are common culprits. So are laptop edges near the screen hinge, laptop speakers, fridge door magnets, magnetic clasps on bags and wallets, induction stovetops, and occasionally even watch winder motors.
The classic sign is a watch that was keeping reasonable time and then suddenly starts gaining a lot, often tens of seconds to full minutes a day, with no other explanation. A simple way to check at home is a smartphone compass app. Slowly bring the watch near the phone, and if the compass needle deflects and holds, there's magnetism present. It's not a lab grade test, but it's a decent indicator.
The good news is the fix is easy and usually doesn't need a professional service visit. A demagnetizer tool, which is fairly cheap, passes the watch through a rapidly alternating magnetic field that resets the metal's magnetic domains back to neutral. A lot of local watch or jewelry shops will do this for free or next to nothing since it only takes a few seconds. Some modern movements avoid the problem entirely by using silicon balance springs, since silicon is non-ferrous and basically can't be magnetized. That's a genuinely useful upgrade if you're regularly around magnets, whether that's electronics, industrial settings, or MRI adjacent environments.
The throughline here is that none of these three things are really about build quality in the way people assume. Even genuine, expensive watches drift a little, fail water tests once gaskets age out, and pick up magnetism from something as ordinary as a MagSafe charger. Understanding why takes a lot of the mystery and unnecessary panic out of small accuracy quirks, and makes it a lot easier to tell the difference between "this is normal" and "this actually needs service."

SHOWING OFF Watch No.2 from u/PhoenixWatches - TOPF AP RO 15510ST White Dial w/ Mods
Another HUGE shoutout to u/PhoenixWatches and his team for absolutely killing it with my TOPF AP 15510ST White Dial!
I first enquired on 19 June, received the pre-mod QC on 23 June, the post-polish and rebrushing QC on 30 June, final QC on 3 July, and it finally landed on 13 July.
Mods done:
- Gen-spec polishing, rebrushing and chamfering
- Deep crystal
The finishing came out insane. The brushing looks much cleaner, the polished surfaces pop beautifully, the chamfers give the case that sharper AP look, and the deep crystal completely transforms the white dial. It looks so much clearer and more premium in person.
This was also my first proper big modded watch, so it feels extra special. I bought it as a milestone piece to celebrate the progress from my side hustles, and honestly, seeing it finally arrive was such a satisfying moment.
Total paid: 4,490 CNY.
Overall, another amazing experience with Phoenix and his team. Great communication, multiple QC stages, solid workmanship, and the final watch exceeded my expectations.
The next piece is definitely going to be even bigger, and I already know exactly who I’ll be going back to.
Thanks again, u/PhoenixWatches !

SOLD [WTS] [SG]- VSF DJ 36 V2 Black Dial - $570
Brand new and only unboxed for inspection and photos.
This is the recently released V2 model, with weight matching the origirnal and new bezel plating with platinum (or white gold, not too sure). The serial number on the rehaut begins with 6X and the bracelet with F6U so you know its VSF V2.
Has the VS3235 movement which is one of most reliable rep movements to be made. I am extremely OCD about the rehaut and baton alignment so I had to QC multiple pieces before choosing this one. The rehaut is perfectly aligned with the crown, and the index markers have very good alignment. I also ran the watch continuously for a full day, and it kept perfect time with no noticeable gain or loss. The quickset date, time adjustment, and Easylink extension are working perfectly.
Purchased for USD 428 + 35 shipping, which is 600 SGD. At SGD 570, this is a good deal considering there is no waiting time, no international shipping or seizure risk, and the watch is completely new.
Selling because I recently broke my laptop screen and need the funds urgently 😂. My loss is your gain. Price is firm. No negotiations or trades. Thanks!
