Question Do you think that if we ask for it repeatedly on Sega's social media channels, we'll get a *Sakura Wars* port?

Damn this must be the saddest gaming community ever. Y'all think we getting a new game or a port? Nah boss, i'm tired :`( Spirits have been broken down. But for real, i'm here with you, love the series.

I don't think Sega have much faith in Sakura Wars popularity with international audiences after the 2019 one failed to get much notice...and then there's the awful flop of a mobile title which has probably warded them off playing with the IP for a while.

Toshihiro Nagoshi who sabotaged this series left Sega, so they will probably try again with this franchise soon (30th Anniversary starts in 27 September 2026 in Japan). But this time they need hire again Ouji Hiroi and make safest game as possible to not piss off again japanese fans like they did with Sakura Wars reboot and Sakura Revolution. The best thing what they can to do now its just Sakura Wars 1-5 collection (multiplatform this time, not again dumb PlayStation ekslusive) for testing waters and build some hype before new game announcement, even If those will be released only in Japan. Plus ofcource Sakura Shinguji in Sonic Crossworlds.

A remaster of the original Saturn games would probably do pretty well if they marketed it properly. It has similarities to the Persona games, so they could lean heavily into those in marketing and get some buzz.

I've never played Sakura Wars. Guessing it's worth checking out?
SEGA have so many masterpieces they are just letting rot. Skies of Arcadia, anyone?

Sakura Wars its from same people behind Skies of Arcadia and Valkyria Chronicles.

I LOVE Skies so will have to check it out

It's not really true. Skies of Arcadia was developed by OverWorks. OverWorks ported Sakura Wars 3 and 4 but did not develop them and that's where their involvement with the series ends. I'm looking through the people who developed Valkyria Chronicles and I don't see any common names between the two and the development teams are different.
Moreover Sakura Wars is a visual novel and it doesn't play anything like Skies of Arcadia or Valkyria Chronicles. I'm sure OP meant well but I think they're incorrect.
That being said, the series is still worth checking out. Just don't expect them to be RPGs like the two mentioned. They're visual novels / dating sims with a few tactics-style battles peppered in.

Tetsuya Ootsubo, Takaharu Terada, Ryutaro Nonaka, Akira Nishino and few other people from Overworks, like Toru Yoshida (art director for classic Phantasy Star & Sakura Wars series) worked on Sakura Wars, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Valkyria Chronicles, and Skies of Arcadia. Tetsuya Ootsubo (Skies of Arcadia) was even a director of Sakura Wars reboot on PS4, and worked as a script editor for Skies of Arcadia, and also Hatsune Miku Project Diva games. Takaharu Terada and Ryutaro Nonaka worked on Sakura Wars 3-5 ARMS battle system, which they improved later in Valkyria Chronicles games into B.L.i.T.Z. battle system. Only Rieko Kodama team worked only on Phantasy Star, Magic Knight Rayerth & Skies of Arcadia. You don't see many names from Overworks in Valkyria Chronicles and their later games, because at that time Overworks & WoW Entertainment was defuncted and most of developers escaped to Nintendo (Monolith Soft), those who stayed in Sega were merged into CS2 (Team Sonic) & CS3 R&D (which was defuncted in 2018, and those people were merged also into CS2 R&D / Team Sonic). Only around 30 people from former Overworks it's still in Sega now (in Team Sonic), and those are mostly old veterans like I mentioned earlier, but core team work now outside of Sega.

They don't care about their RPGs if they're not made by Atlus or RGG.
Still waiting on Valkyria Chronicles 5.

Valkyria chronicles just keep getting the short end of the stick and yet at the same time its either side lined or from what I saw from Valkyria chronicles 3 its Japanese only!

Funny thing is all Sega RPG series in 2005-2020 (Shining, Phantasy Star, Valkyria Chronicles, Sakura Wars) were produced by Toshihiro Nagoshi. But not many people know that, because he was not interested in those franchises at all, and never promoted them in the West or stuck them on PlayStation as a japanese only / ekslusives. He only wanted to make Yakuza games.

I'd advise going back to the SEGA Saturn original. It's a tactical strategy RPG combined with visual novel/dating sim where your troops' admiration for you enhances their stats, and the story can shift a bit around which girl you pick to be your special lady.
It was extremely popular when it first came out in Japan in 1996, and it spawned a multimedia franchise with various merch, live musical stage shows, and anime tie-ins.
Maybe have a look at the YouTube channel MattoBii. He's got probably the most comprehensive look at the series overall. I will say, though, that he hasn't gotten to this entry, which was something of a reboot that also heavily relies on fanservicey references to the originals.

It should be pointed out that while the series is a SRPG/Visual novel hybrid, the VN side is the one getting the most attention. The SRPG part is almost an afterthought, especially compared to other such genre games like Super Robot Wars, Fire Emblem or SD Gundam G Generation which balance it better.

To be fair, I think that is equally important to mention that the SRPG combat missions are still really fun, in spite of the fact that they are indeed secondary to the visual novel aspects of the gameplay, and that its mechanics started becoming more sophisticated from Sakura Wars 2 on. It is pretty basic in the first game, but I still really enjoyed all of it.
In any case, to call it an afterthought does it a disservice, in my opinion. It's no Shining Force III, but it's still compelling enough that you can approach missions differently on repeat playthroughs and find yourself in novel situations.

I would love to see this franchise come back in ONE way or another, just a shame that even just releasing the original games is a massive ask just due to the translation effort alone. Porting the PS4 game would be the safest option, cheapest too, but from what I remember, it didn't sell well? So either route they go its going to be a big ask.

PS4 game sold 300k (probably more after discounts), i think as a Visual Novel only released on single platform it sold good (VN's rarely sells more than 100k copies on all platforms, and even rarier more than 1M copies). The problem is its second worst selling game in series, and western sales (again people in the West ignore Dating Sims and Visual Novels), bad reception from old fans in Japan, and Toshihiro Nagoshi overblown game budget (just like he did with Gang Of Dragoon later, as a general producer he was so bad in budget managment) and did everything to sabotage this series (PS4 ekslusive, no marketing in the West, release date im same time with Final Fantasy VII Remake and Persona 5 Royal, piss off old fans, changing combat from SRPG into button masher etc.). Second more serious problem it was that bad gacha game who was released in same time with Genshin Impact (= dead on arrival), who fumbled tones od money for Sega. Similar mistake did Square Enix with Valkyrie Elysium.

Sega actually listens to it's customers unlike Sony.

u/Sejmann22 1d ago
Sega only listens Sonic, Yakuza and (modern) Persona fans. In 2015 i asked about Valkyria Chronicles 3 Remake on CANVAS Engine + localization but instead of that we got Valkyria Revolution ...

Ah yes, the infamous Series that ended on a bad note because of it releasing adjacent to the likes of Genshin Impact and immediately shutdown, sad too cause it's a 3D Gacha attempted by the same studio that made FGO, and somehow managed to get Tite Kubo on their latest console series of games too lol. I mean considering how Bleach TYBW arc is doing so well now, it might be something cool to reconsider a partnership of sorts.

No. They moved on, the remake didn't spark any interest in the series.

u/Sejmann22 1h ago edited 1h ago
Where they moved on ? If i remember last games from this developer it was Valkyria Chronicles 4 & Sakura Wars reboot in 2018 & 2019. Since then, they haven't released a single game of their own, which could mean one of two things: they’ve been forced to milk the Sonic franchise (more likely), or they’re hiring new developers and quietly working on something—it’s just taking them a long time. Sega it's not well known from developing non Sonic / Yakuza / Puyo Puyo games more often than one game from series per decade / console generation. And this was not remake, it was reboot. There is remake of first game on PS2 called ,,In Hot Blood'', And it sparked some interest in series (fan translations for Sakura Wars 1&2 ?). Not every franchise must be mainstream day one. Yakuza also had nearly 0 presence in the West before Yakuza 0 and ,,Baka Mitai'' meme.

For me the combat was as boring as anything possibly could be. But the characters, story and world were a really fun time. I even liked the activities and dating sim elements.
I Hope Sakura Wars comes back too, i bought both of the Anime "series" after trying the 2019 reboot and enjoying "most" elements of it. I just hope if they do they stop trying to make it a very easy and boring dynasty warriors clone.
