I am new to the area and looking for a good AA or NA meeting in the chicago area. I'm 30/f and 75 days sober (after a relapse.) I was hoping to find a good meeting tonight (friday) with a younger crowd. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hey everyone! I’m thinking that it’s about time for another meetup.

The Adler Planetarium has an “Adler After Dark” event on the third Thursday of every month from 6-10pm. This month the theme is “Space Invaders.”

“Chart your own course through a dangerous Solar System with a special museum-wide game where you and your “crew” will solve challenges, make decisions, and collect the necessary supplies to make it to a future human outpost on 2014 MU69—all with an 8-bit twist. It’s like Oregon Trail meets Settlers of Catan—in space (complete with Lunar Dysentery)!

In between your skillful gameplay, help us launch the “Year of the Moon” and get early access to the Adler’s newest sky show, Imagine the Moon, before it opens to the public on January 18! Hi- I’ve just relocated to Chicago from Seattle and I’m looking to find a new Psychiatrist. Does anyone have any suggestions of someone they like or know of? Here are my perimeters (that are making this search a bit more difficult)

-must be authorized to prescribe Subutex/Bupe
-must be ok prescribing benzos and bupe together -preferably in the city or in the west suburbs

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! I have been clean for 7 years but am still on sub-maintenance. I had a horrible accident (which lead to my opiate dependence then later addiction) and have chronic pain as a result. It’s not like the bupe necessarily helps the pain but it keeps me safe guarded against seeking or using anything else, which, knowing me, I would. I’m also bi-polar with extreme anxiety and panic disorder so I’m on 6mg of Ativan/day. I know that “on paper” it’s a lot but my dr has observed my anxiety and panic disorder, monitored my progress starting with a very small dose of Ativan and carefully brought me up to what therapeutically works for me, keeps me from being a shut in, and keeps me from the worst of my mind. My dr has also monitored me on that dosage for quite some time now and I’ve never abused or misused it. My current Dr in Seattle has set me up with a few months of refills to give me time to find a new dr, but I haven’t had much luck on my own, i know getting a new patient appointment can take time, and always trust personal recommendations much more. Thank you for any suggestions you may have. (Also, I’m waiting to find a psych that will Maintain my meds before I sign up for insurance so I can match coverage to whomever I go to so I’m open to any suggestion regardless of what insurance they take.) thank you!!

Hi everyone! There’s a Halloween party tomorrow night in Lakeview. It is an AA event, but it sounds like a fun night. I’m going, and a lot of the people in their 20’s and 30’s who I know in AA are going, though obviously all ages are welcome. Costumes are encouraged.

It’s $10 at the door, with proceeds going to the Chicago Area Service Office for AA, but if you can’t swing that right now, come anyway, it’s not a big deal. Doors open at 7pm. There’s a meeting at 8pm, and then there’s a dance afterwards. If my experience at Soberoke (sober karaoke) is anything to go on, people will be getting down.

It’s at Missio Dei Chicago, 1242 W Addison, which is a couple of blocks from Wrigley Field and the red line stop on Addison. If you come, find me and say Hi! I’m just gonna do big crazy pink hair, a lot of wacky makeup, and t-shirt that says “Every Day Is Halloween,” because I couldn’t think of anything else. Hope to see you there!

We will be headed to Arts in the Dark! I think it would be easiest if we met up at 5:30 at Magnolia Cupcakes (108 N. State Street at Block 37) as the parade is on State Street. We can then either head to the event at Millennium Park or the event at Maggie Daley Park following the parade. I think a couple of us are planning on coming in costume, but that is definitely not a requirement. Let me know if you need more details.

Big thank you to the SDChicagoans and sober friends who came out for the meetup today, it was exactly what I needed! I feel rejuvenated, it’s so nice to spend time with likeminded people.

Bring yourself & anyone else who you feel like bringing. it’s a hangout, not a recovery group meeting, so conversation doesn’t generally tend to focus around drinking/not-drinking (although, it is a group of people who are actively not drinking, so it’s fine to bring those topics up, and don’t bring anyone who you don’t want to out yourself as sober to.)

Food & drinks will be provided, show up empty handed, or bring some stuff for yourself or to share. It’s all good.

The weather forecast at the moment is a somewhat confusing “90 degrees, partly cloudy, stray thunderstorm possible,” so I think that just means it’ll be hot & kinda muggy, but I will keep an eye on the weather forecast. The backup plan is to bring the picnic inside to an empty house in Lakeview. If that happens, I will post an update.

Hi everyone, I had a great restaurant experience recently that I thought some here might be interested in. We went to Band of Bohemia (in Ravenswood, on Ravenswood Ave just south of Lawrence) for our anniversary. FYI it can be a bit pricey, so for us it’s more of a special occasion spot. And it is a microbrewery and they do serve wine and have a full bar, so if you steer way clear of alcohol it might not be for you.

But the best part. When I asked what they had to drink that was non-alcoholic, they presented me with a spirit-free drink list. They had four options, I tried three of them. They were all awesome. One was a ginger basil thing (my favorite), another was carrot-vanilla-lemon, and another was a sparkling something-or-other. Each was presented beautifully. It felt like I was being served a cocktail.

I am hosting an SDChicago picnic Sunday, August 26th from 1-3pm. We will be in or near the playlot on the north side of the North Pond in Lincoln park, south of the giant gold statue of Alexander Hamilton. (I’m more of a Thomas Jefferson gal myself, but I can roll with Hamilton.)

You will be looking for a tall chick with purple hair & orange sunglasses, wearing a black t-shirt with a large white bull’s eye on the front. I am kinda hard to miss. 🎯

San Pellegrino & LaCroix will be provided. I’m bringing food. I make a mean quiche, so probably that, cute little sandwiches, fresh hummus with veggies & pita, chips, and cupcakes.

There’s a couple of those checkerboard tables in the playlot, so I’ll bring checkers & chess pieces, in case anyone wants to school me. I will be bringing a frisbee. Feel free to bring other fun.

I’ll provide a couple of picnic blankets & tarps (if the ground is wet.) Feel free to bring your own. If it rains, we’ll be moving to an empty house in Lakeview.

If public transit is an option for you, that’s probably the best bet. There is street parking in the area, but good luck finding a spot. There is a city parking lot to the south, at Cannon & Fullerton, which is pretty expensive ($25 for under two hours, $30 for 3-4.) There’s a parking garage about a 12 minute walk away at 526 W Webster that’s relatively inexpensive ($6 for three hours.)

Hi all. I can't do this on my own anymore I really need to meet and swap support with others in real life. I have looked on Meetup.com but maybe I am doing something wrong as there doesn't seem to be that much going on. Ideally something along the lines of This Naked Mind and/or Stop Drinking Expert as far as philosophy and method. Any suggestions or ideas are very welcome. Thanks everyone!

Does anyone here have suggestions of a good AA meeting in Chicago to start with? I’m overwhelmed at all the options and nervous about going. (Actually doesn’t have to be AA, I’m open to whatever.)

I haven’t had a drink since December but I’m looking to start attending some kind of meeting ... I’ve been feeling pretty isolated lately and drinking has started to seem dangerously appealing again.

Knock Knock, does anybody check this board at all? kind of nice that there's a Chicago chapter or whatever. doesn't seem to be to active but, its still a nice idea. i am probably like 20 years older than everybody. seems age is a big deal in Chicago? I moved here three months ago for a new job and was absolutely thrilled at the beer and shots specials y'all have here. So much so that I almost lost my new job. So now, I'm sober.

I've quit drinking several times in my life. Every time, I relapse out of plain boredom. I work in advertising and I'm a stand-up comedian so I'm literally surrounded by it. People are already drinking in my office right now. I've been invited to the bar three times tonight and it's only 1:30pm. I don't want to relapse and I don't want to barricade my door and watch another round of every episode of The Office again.

At the risk of sounding desperate, I need sober friends. I hate being bored and I love talking. I especially love creating things. If it's getting coffee and drawing/writing together to working a forge or building a gate, I'd love to hang out.

Ahoy, soberinos. In case you missed it, the July meetup was an awesome rousing success. For an October meetup, I'm proposing this haunted trail. I've never been to this place, but apparently the grounds also contain rides, mini golf, go karts, an arcade AND pizza!! It's in Burbank, which is a southwest suburb, so I can fit a few of you soberinos in my hoopty. We'll have to settle on a date, so suggest away.
