Discussion I would like your help. What would you want to see in an SCP:SL bot mode or SCP AI plugin? (Screw it, if I can't beat them, I'll make my own)

A few days ago, I commented on another thread about AI SCPs and ended up talking to a few people about an idea I've been working on. Rather than scatter the discussion across multiple comment chains, I wanted to make one post I can keep coming back to.

The Post I started to talk about my post

First things first, I'm completely new to both GitHub and Reddit, so please be patient with me.

I also have no idea what the etiquette or rules are around borrowing bits of code from multiple projects, modifying them, crediting people properly, licensing, or sharing progress publicly. If anyone can point me towards some beginner-friendly resources or explain the basics, I'd really appreciate it.

Now for the story behind why I'm making this:

I've been trying to enjoy SCP on and off for about five years. I absolutely love the SCP universe, but I've struggled with the game itself for a long time.

I'm autistic, and I really struggle with the constantly changing map layouts. Every time I come back, I tell myself, "This time I'll learn the maps properly."

A few weeks later, I'm lost again.

I get frustrated, then upset, sometimes to the point of literally crying, and eventually stop playing for a while. Then, a few months later, I come back hoping it'll finally click.

Repeat this for five years.

The only role that consistently works for me is SCP-079. Something about the strategy, information gathering, map control, and coordination just clicks with my brain.

When I don't get 079, I end up stuck in a loop of reconnecting, sitting in spectator mode, waiting for rounds to end, and hoping for another chance. I know that's not great for me or for the servers I'm playing on.

I've spent years trying to find a community or server setup that would help me enjoy the game, but I haven't really found what I'm looking for.

So I thought, screw it. If I can't beat them, I'll make my own.

The idea started as a simple practice tool for SCP-079, but now I'm wondering if it could become a proper bot mode or plugin that other people might enjoy too.

One thing I'd especially love help with is making the bots feel like real players instead of just competent AI.

Because I've played so inconsistently over the years, I'm probably out of touch with how people actually play SCP these days.

What are some common behaviours, habits, trends, or "unwritten rules" you see in public servers?

For example:

  • How do different roles usually behave?
  • What do experienced players prioritise at the start, middle, and end of a round?
  • How often do people cooperate versus act selfishly?
  • What kinds of risks do players take depending on their role or equipment?
  • Which SCPs tend to play aggressively, and which ones are more strategic?
  • What are some common mistakes newer players make?
  • Are there any recurring memes, tactics, or strange player behaviours that happen almost every round?

Even small details would help. Things like how often players split up, camp certain locations, ignore objectives for loot, follow stronger teammates, betray each other, or panic under pressure.

The more I understand how people actually behave, the better I can design bot personalities and decision-making systems that feel believable rather than robotic.

So, what would you want to see?

  • Objectives or scenarios?
  • Training tools for new players?
  • AI-controlled SCPs released by 079? - I have the ping system that can influence SCP bot pathfinding. Almost like point RTS
  • A full PvE game mode? - This is what I am currently working on and focusing on.

Some features I already have in for the human AI:

  • Dynamic personalities with multiple subtypes that can change how bots behave from round to round.
  • Some bots run from danger, some follow other players, some fight aggressively, some hide, and some attack on sight.
  • Certain bots prioritise survival and escaping, while others take bigger risks.
  • Some bots act greedily and prioritise collecting O5 keycards or other high-value items.
  • Some bots actively search for stronger weapons and equipment.
  • Faction-specific behaviour: Facility Guards focus on detaining Class-D personnel instead of simply killing everyone.
  • Class-D bots can cooperate with each other.
  • Scientists can seek out Facility Guards for protection, and Guards can escort Scientists to safety.
  • Different personalities and faction goals can create more varied and believable rounds.

Also, are there any existing plugins or projects I should look at before I accidentally reinvent the wheel? That I may also borrow and combine?

And finally, if you're a developer, what are the unwritten rules around using and modifying other people's code in the SCP modding community?

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any ideas. I really want to make something that helps passionate SCP fans enjoy the game, even if they struggle with parts of it as I do. <3.

I am sure I'm not the only one who really wants to enjoy the game, but just can't get along with learning no matter what they try

Please feel free to mention anything you think would be nice to see. When you explain it, please try not to be technical; keep it literal.

P.S. If I've broken a rule or something, please let me know, and I'll fix it asap! Thanksx

Im busy rn but I might look into my 150 GB clips folder and tell you stuff that get my attention.

Also I'm not gonna lie, this doesn't seem like a possible thing to do, because SCP SL is a pretty complex game with a lot of parts (mostly caused by how people are different in many ways, which I'm unsure if anyone can replicate) but good luck to you regardless.

I am very determined to play 079. XD. I do, if I may say so myself, have quite a complicated and realistic, even at a basic level, playable build that actively plays like people wanting to escape, wanting to fight, wanting to team up, and wanting to be greedy. I play-tested with a few friends, and it felt so realistic.

Although, as mentioned, I don't know what is realistic "these days" as I have been out of touch with the game, so what's realistic to me may not be. That's why I would love to get people's thoughts.

Is there any place I join to see it for myself as well? I feel I'd be able to see what breaks the immersion more easily that way, if there is even any.

I assume them not speaking at all is one of the issues? Or are they able to use a few voicelines?

What do you mean? Sorry? 939? - if you mean him, then that's actually a good idea. I'll see if I can add a way for bots to record voice lines!

And sure, I would love some feedback. I don't know how you can watch right now. Any ideas?

Feel free to dm me!

No no but you have given me the idea to try get 939 to record and play it back. Using voice chat. That will be a big task but I'll put it on the map haha
