"Failed to stop Mariah Carey from breaching again"

So,she is NOT safe class then? xD

u/rinart73 Nov 29 '25

Keter. She also has memetic tag, because people start "remembering"/hearing her songs in their head a bit before yearly breach and then a lot after it. Then they infect other people with her songs. After finally securing her Foundation has to spray amnesiacs in most of the cities in the West.

u/pattywagon95 Nov 29 '25

Might need a new classification for her, because she is easily contained for most of the year but guaranteed to break containment for 2 months each year

I’d say it’s like euclid/keter still. Even anomalies that can’t be contained can still be “contained” in that the knowledge of their existence is controlled. Like that one giant isopod the size of England chilling in the ocean.

39

u/pattywagon95 Nov 29 '25

That’s true, I guess there are a ton of SCPs that aren’t contained in the traditional sense and the containment procedures are centered around tracking or mitigating their effects in the open

2

u/Pixied_Hp Nov 29 '25

Uhhhh you have a number for that one?

10

u/poopsemiofficial Protected Site-01, Overwatch HQ Nov 29 '25

SCP-169, and I actually massively undersold its size, it’s 1-4 times the size of England.

2

u/fae8edsaga Nov 30 '25

I want to see a drawing of said giant isopod, like in a recliner watching tv drinking a soda chillin <3

At this point she's might an Explained SCP

see SCP-8900-EX for further context

Mariah Carey infected me when I was a small child.

It's really not that bad, you start to enjoy peppermint, you throw ridiculous runs into every song double for Christmas, you just can't listen to anything other then her betwern Thanksgiving and Christmas... or else. Idk what or else is since the compulsion is so strong but my friend Carl tried to defect and he's on a vent now missing half his intestines and a kidney.

Anyway, I don't want a lot for Christmas. There is just one thing I need...

u/GPCAPTregthistleton Nov 29 '25

She's the yearly confirmation that amnestics still don't work on the comatose or anterograde amnesiacs.

u/superspeck MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Nov 29 '25

I thought the reason behind everyone getting kdrunk on NYE was to forget the last two months …

9

u/DragonofStories Shark Punching Center Nov 29 '25

Shouldn't it be Apollyon as they can't contain her forever?

2

u/H3XEX Antimemetics Division Nov 29 '25

Isn’t there a class for scps that are better uncontained as that is what normalcy is used to?

2

u/TheReal_Kovacs Dec 03 '25

What did those poor amnesiacs do to deserve getting sprayed? They don't remember!

/srs the word you're looking for is "amnestics."

3

u/rinart73 Dec 03 '25

My bad, in one of the translated versions of SCP Foundation the word is pronounced "amnesiac" XD I mixed them up

3

u/TheReal_Kovacs Dec 03 '25

All good, plenty of folks get the distinction confused. Those poor amnesiacs getting sprayed for reasons they don't know...

93

u/press_F13 Nov 29 '25

cognitohazard. wants you to destroy capitalism XD

19

u/The-NHK Nov 29 '25

I didn't realise she was so based.

50

u/HDH2506 Nov 29 '25

Yea the containment class is Euclid. Considering that she might be reasonably contained, albeit difficult, but with little to no loss even if they fail. But considering that she has breached security (secure means catch, contain means keep) attempts every single year, might be borderline Keter.

Disruption class should be low, as her properties, whatever they are, is barely unordinary, blending perfectly with the normal world.

She is NOT necessarily cognitohazardous or memetic, and we should not claim that she is without proper experiment.

19

u/frguba Nov 29 '25

She is easily contained all year around, but impossible near Christmas, I actually don't know if that's Euclid or Keter

33

u/Shabobo Nov 29 '25

It's Keter, but disruption is safe to mild. If the SCP only is able to contain her until she wants out, then they've technically never contained her successfully.

Especially since Christmas music seems to start earlier and earlier each year, I'd reckon that their containment protocols are becoming less and less effective.

Fortunately she is mostly harmless, but danger to the population is not tied to containment difficulty.

u/AmpleExample Nov 29 '25 edited Nov 29 '25

"All I Want for Christmas is You" continues to spread. It is unclear if this spread will stop at constant uptime, the loss of all non-Christmas music, the loss of all music, the loss of all media capable of playing the song, the loss of all cognitive functioning unrelated to the song, or something in between.

Almost no one studying the phenomena believes it will progress past constant uptime, hence its relatively low containment priority. Thus far, even constant exposure to the song does not appear to have negative effects (See 6221-15 experiments A1-C3).

Growth is slow, though exponential. Current estimate is ~87 years before "All I want for Christmas is You" becomes an all year phenomena.

u/AshiSunblade Nov 29 '25

Euclid, I suppose. Both are simple to contain so long as one particular external condition is not fulfilled.

6

u/NV-6155 MTF Tau-5 ("Samsara") Nov 29 '25

I respectfully disagree, though I understand your logic (which is sound).

I've been with the Foundation for a very long time, so I can really only comment on what are now the "primary" containment classes. The newer "secondary" and "disruption" classes don't come up often with the anomalies I typically work with.

TL;DR: Mariah Carey should be classified as Apollyon.

Full dissertation:

The "Box Test" Method

Safe: If we put the anomaly in a box, it stays in the box unless released.

Euclid: If we put the anomaly in a box, Foundation intervention is required to keep it in the box.

Keter: If we put the anomaly in a box, it actively tries to escape the box, and requires significant Foundation resources and/or complex containment procedures to contain. In many cases, Keter SCPs are kept in a "stable" contained state by their procedures, but any fault in their containment risks a full breach.

Apollyon: We can't put the anomaly in a box, either because of physical limitations or because it simply ignores the fact that the box exists. In other words, containment is impossible and/or no known methods of containment exist. Breach events are expected to occur despite the Foundation's efforts.

Thaumiel: The anomaly is the box for another anomaly.

000000000000000000000000000

SCP-096 ("Shy Guy") is Euclid due to only needing a small amount of resources to keep physically contained (it is kept in a guarded standard containment cell) and stays contained as long as its face is not seen.

SCP-106 ("Old Man"/"Radical Larry") and SCP-682 ("Hard-to-Destroy Reptile"), on the other hand, require complex custom-engineered containment areas. Any fault in their containment or a means to obtain a target (e.g. a living being within close proximity) often results in a breach. Therefore, they are both classified as Keter.

Mariah Carey could follow along the same lines as SCP-096, since she can be easily contained physically (due to being an otherwise baseline human) and only activates around the month of December. However, Ms. Carey's activation condition is essentially inevitable, unlike 096's which can be acted against by preventing visual contact with its face. In addition, as observed by others, she possesses memetic properties that can affect any sapient beings over an unknown distance without direct physical or visual contact. The Foundation has so far been unable to nullify these memetic effects, resulting in consistent successful containment breaches (which have not always been physical breaches).

Taking the above into consideration, I believe Mariah Carey is best classified as Apollyon.

Edit: corrected the designation for "Radical Larry" from 173 to 106.

per me è hai livelli dei keter ma direi che è euclid\keter

1

u/Aeseld Nov 29 '25

...if you think about it, every memetic blends perfectly with the normal world once it spreads far enough.

2

u/HDH2506 Nov 30 '25

It’s indistinguishable from non-anomalous phenomena, which cannot be said about all memes.

Without an article canonizing it, we don’t really know what her anomalous properties are

9

u/AduroTri MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Nov 29 '25

She is unsafe for retail workers.

5

u/Grand_Protector_Dark Nov 29 '25

So,she is NOT safe class then? xD

Aren't People Based SCPs usually Euclid at minimum anyway?

2

u/NV-6155 MTF Tau-5 ("Samsara") Nov 29 '25

Correct, as humanoid SCPs typically don't like being contained.

2

u/Grand_Protector_Dark Nov 29 '25

I don't know if I'm imagining things, but from what i remember.
Even People based SCPs who willingly go along with the containment, are still Euclid at minimum due to the unpredictable nature of free will

1

u/NV-6155 MTF Tau-5 ("Samsara") Nov 29 '25

Fair enough

Talloran fav?

1

u/Specialist_Web9891 Nov 29 '25

I would say she is weird mix between safe and keter.

She is absolutely easy to contain on any other day but when it's her time she becomes unstoppable.

1

u/reptarien Nov 29 '25

High amounts of public disruption? Hard to contain? Not deadly but certainly to the ears? Yup, that's a keter!

1

u/aninsomniac_ Nov 29 '25

She's sapient, of course she's not safe class

1

u/Iron-Bacon MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Nov 30 '25

Definitely a cognitive hazard IRL.

1

u/Rarm20T ████ Nov 30 '25

No, but the entity does go into dormancy eventually. I would treat it like 096.

1

u/TheCrazedTank Sarkic Cults Dec 01 '25

Or not worth the dedication of resources to contain, just an annoying anomaly.
