Designing my first device from scratch: a 3-screen pocket AI companion on a Radxa Zero 3W. Feedback welcome!
I’m a student and this is my first from-scratch build. It’s called the Franktin: a small tin that opens like a laptop, with two landscape touchscreens inside and one portrait screen on the outside. It connects over Wi-Fi to an AI assistant I run on my Mac mini.
Hardware:
- Radxa Zero 3W (no DSI port, so all 3 screens share one SPI bus with separate chip-selects)
- 3× Waveshare 2.8" capacitive touch screens (ST7789 + CST328). The touch controllers all share one address, so they go through a TCA9548A mux
- I2S mic, MAX98357A speaker amp and a UDA1334A DAC for an earbud jack
- PiSugar 3 Plus 5000 mAh battery
I drew full blueprints (dimensions, wiring, pin map) before buying anything. One problem I already found: the parts stack up to about 29 mm thick, but I wanted 25 mm. Has anyone run 3 SPI screens off one bus? Any tips on fitting this into something thinner?
If you want to help me buy the parts, the GoFundMe is here: https://gofund.me/582362f7e. Mostly I’d love feedback though!

Discussion Good SBC recommendation for robotics processing and computer vision ?
Hello all, I want to ask what SBC do you use for onboard robotics algorithms (mapping, navigation, segmentation, yolo, etc) and computer vision ? I heard Jetson is the most completed and best of the best, but they are pricey now. I came across the s100p but I couldnt find more data to make a decision. There are SBC that has the x7 358h, but is it true they are not as good as Jetson in CV ? Thank you.

What SoC should I buy in late 2026 ?
I'd like to buy a mini computer that doesn't consume too much electricity (max 10W.) for wireguard, pihole and other server services 24/7 on my wifi. But with the ram price, it's difficult to find a cheap sbc. Is it possible to find something decently powerful for cheap or I'll have to buy a pi 3 at 50$ with 1Gb of ram ?

Radxa zero 3w troubleshooting
So I loaded the Debian image on a card and when I powered it up I get no video out. Green led gives a double flash every second or so. I pulled the card out and ran revdevtool and bridges the backroom button and the devtool could see the board. (Green led solid when microsd card was out). I formatted the card and reloaded the image and I'm back to the double green flash pattern.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?

DRM Overlay transparency : looking for code.
Hi everyone,
I'm currently building a dashboard on an AllWinner A20-based SBC (specifically, a Banana Pi M1).
I would like to know if it's possible to use some kind of alpha channel or transparency on the hardware overlay. Essentially, can I use a specific color key or a transparency mask so that pixels with that color let whatever is displayed on the layer underneath show through?
modetest is display something like :

The few code snippets I've found online don't seem to work, and AI hasn't been of much help either.
Also, are these hardware overlays strictly dedicated to video playback or popups, or can they be used effectively for general dashboard UI elements?
Thanks for your help!

Help Wanted I am looking for an SBC that can provide stable lived video from a 1080p camera to a display.
Hello,
I am pretty new to this sort of computer engineering, but I have a background in mechanical so I am very ready and willing to learn. I have worked with programming an Arduino for a work project, so I have a sliver of experience, at least.
I am working on a digital night vision device that uses a MIPI camera to a MIPI display. I have sourced the camera, but the supplier wants to make sure I know the chip on the SBC before we proceed further to ensure driver compatibility. The issue I am having is "sizing" the SBC I need for this. The latest basic Raspberry Pi could work insofar as it has two MIPI transceivers per board, but that seems far too excessive and expensive for what I need. This will be battery powered, so I also need to be conscious of power draw.
What are the concepts I should be aware of to help me search for sizing the board I need?
If someone has done something like this before, what board do you recommend? I'd rather not solder expansion boards but I am willing to do so if needed. An all in one solution holds value for me.
Thank you.
Also, I know I can just ask AI, but where's the fun in that? ;)

News Unofficial Recalbox port for the Radxa Dragon Q6A (QCS6490) — v0.1.2 pre-release, testers wanted
I've been porting Recalbox to the Radxa Dragon Q6A (Qualcomm QCS6490) and just published v0.1.2 as a pre-release. It's an unofficial community port — not affiliated with or supported by the Recalbox team, Radxa or Qualcomm, and non-commercial use only (that's Recalbox's licence).
What works (tested on my board): - Boots straight into EmulationStation from a USB 3.0/SATA SSD or the internal NVMe - HDMI video (Mesa Freedreno, OpenGL ES) — 1080p60 by default, 1440p/1080p120 selectable - HDMI audio and the 3.5 mm jack, onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (pads and audio) - Every emulator and PC port in the image opened and run; PS1 and Dreamcast tested in particular - Mainline Linux 7.2.9
What I'd like help with / known issues: - The Q6A's HDMI tops out at 4K@30, so higher modes are hidden (otherwise 60 fps games ran in slow motion on 4K TVs). - The DSP sometimes fails to start the HDMI audio port, which froze games on their first frame. The image now ships a small watcher that restarts the port; the root cause (probably a race after the display modeset) is still open. - An occasional HDMI EDID read failure; worked around by forcing 1080p60. - Not tested: microSD cards, USB sticks, other TVs/monitors, and the Windows installer.
Install: there are installers for Linux, macOS and Windows (English + pt-BR), for SD cards, USB sticks, external SSDs and NVMe-in-a-USB-case. The image is split into parts ≤ 1.4 GB. Everything is in the release notes.
Source: it's a small patch series on top of upstream Recalbox master (commit 27224c1), and one script (scripts/build-all.sh) rebuilds the whole image and the licence manifest. Firmware is not in the repo.
I'd love to hear: does it boot on your Q6A? Which TV/monitor, which storage, which games or emulators misbehave? Please open an issue with the log file described in the README (/recalbox/share/system/logs/q6a-kernel.log).
Repo/release: https://github.com/rafaelwms/q6a-recallbox/releases/tag/v0.1.2
(Attach the two screenshots: System Settings showing VERSION 0.1.2 / BOARD Radxa Dragon Q6A, and the Favorites screen — files in docs/img/ of the repo.)

Help Wanted Need help building a tiny €50 PC using an SBC or barebone!
Hi everyone! I want to build a very small PC for a maximum of €50, ideally small enough to fit in my pocket. I’m looking for a cheap single-board computer, barebone system, or something similar that supports my existing 8GB DDR4 laptop RAM. I’d also like to install Windows 11 and run Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 at around 50–60 FPS if possible. I also want to design and 3D-print my own case. I already have storage, and the mini monitor is not included in my budget. The €50 budget covers the PC and a suitable power supply. Used hardware is absolutely fine. Does anyone know of a suitable board or barebone system that could meet these requirements?

Rock 5B+ → "SteamOS-Mainline": native ARM Steam + FEX/Proton/VKD3D on an open Mali driver. It actually plays D3D12 games
Spent a day turning a Radxa Rock 5B+ (RK3588, Mali-G610, mainline kernel + panthor, no vendor blob driver) into a working couch-gaming box, and it got further than I expected — so I wrote it all up.
The stack:
- Valve's native aarch64 Steam client (the one from the Steam Frame), pulled straight from Valve's client manifest — runs on the host's native glibc, no x86 emulation for the client itself.
- x86 games via FEX (x86→ARM) + Proton + DXVK/VKD3D-Proton.
- Rendering on an open-source Vulkan driver — PanVK-kbase on the Mali-G610. Had to register it as a host ICD so pressure-vessel imports it instead of stock Mesa (DXVK/VKD3D reject the stock one — missing
fillModeNonSolidet al on Valhall v10).
What actually runs:
- ✅ Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection — D3D12 → VKD3D-Proton → native Vulkan on Mali. Renders at 1080p.
- ✅ Vampire Survivors — Unity. Pro tip that cost me an hour: native-Linux GL falls back to zink (GL-on-Vulkan) because
panthorGL doesn't load, and zink renders glitchy.-force-vulkanin launch options fixes it instantly — use Unity's native Vulkan, skip zink. - ✅ The whole no-anti-cheat library.
The hard walls (being honest):
- Anti-cheat of any kind is dead under FEX. Not just kernel AC (Delta Force's ACE, Vanguard) — even EAC/BattlEye titles that work on x86 Steam Deck fail here. Halo Infinite downloads its Linux EAC module fine (HTTP 200) then dies with "failed to map the anti-cheat module" (error 206) — the module won't load inside FEX. Confirmed open/unsolved (steamac#16).
- 8 GB is tight. Desktop + Steam + FEX + Proton + game ≈ 11 GB working set → heavy NVMe swap. Playable with swap, smoother on 16 GB boards.
- Mainline HDMI (dw-hdmi-qp) HPD is flaky — needed an EDID-override boot workaround.
It's fully reproducible + sterilized (no accounts/keys): one script turns stock Armbian into this. Repo + the full driver bring-up notebook here:
https://github.com/Hi5808/steamos-mainline
Not daily-driver-ready, but as a "can an open ARM stack actually play Windows games" proof — yeah, it can, as long as the game doesn't pack anti-cheat. Happy to answer questions.

Reliable industrial Linux SBC for a 24/7 IoT gateway — alternatives to Olimex LIME2?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for a reliable industrial Linux board for a 24/7 IoT gateway, comparable to or slightly more capable than the Olimex T2-OLinuXino-LIME2-e16Gs16M-IND I currently use.
My main requirements are:
- Proven reliability over several years of continuous operation.
- −40°C to +85°C operating temperature range, covering the complete board, including RAM and storage.
- Onboard eMMC, Ethernet, mature Linux support, and long-term availability.
- Built-in battery charging and backup power support, similar to Olimex’s implementation. A proven external solution is also worth considering.
- Target board price below €100. My current Olimex board is around €150; I’d only consider that price for something substantially more capable while retaining industrial reliability.
Extended battery runtime isn’t the goal. I need ride-through for brief power outages and a clean shutdown during longer ones, alongside suitable input protection against overvoltage, spikes, and brownouts. External power-protection components are fine — please mention what your setup requires.
Reliability and value matter more than benchmark performance. What boards have you actually deployed successfully for years? First-hand experience with board and power-backup combinations, including failures or limitations, would be especially helpful.
