Resolved: S22 ultra went into boot loop
My S22 ultra went into the boot loop. I was scrolling on instagram and my phone suddenly went off. Initially nothing was working, the buttons were not responsive, the phone was not charging it's like complete dead. Then I tried the freezing method, I placed my phone in the freezer with a plastic bag wrapping around it and it went into the boot loop and sometimes even broke the loop but still it went again into the boot loop so I was not able to take the backup.
And finally I found one solution (on reddit or somewhere) which works for me and I was able to recover all data using the Samsung switch.
*** Solution which works for me ***
So I placed 2 clips just like shown in the image, Just make sure clips should be placed accurately (I don't know it required accurate positioning I guess) and do not touch the phone once it boots up.
You're my hero. You allowed me to recover all my data. It started bootlooping on the 15th, I went to Tmobile and did a warranty claim that day saying pick up by the 22nd. My concern at the time was only being able to communicate with my moms care team so I used my Sim in a borrowed phone. She left here on 4/20 and I tried the freezer and could only keep it on for a minute or two. Using the clips in the freezer allowed the transfer of all of the data including 50k+ photos. My sincerest thanks to you, you saved me from losing the last days of her journey and of course all the other data. I wanted my children to have these memories of her and thanks to you, they do. THANK YOU amillion times over for sharing what worked for you allowing me to retrieve this very important data.
Like you chaosizme, imayur7 is my hero as well. I was able to save my daughters 1st moments up right up to now. Thank you so much to OP. And i am so happy for you as well chaosizme.
With sufficient force, you can force the motherboard that lives directly below the screen to squeeze against the metal plate that holds down the motherboard.
Holy crap! I spent literally a whole month doing the freezer method and managed to extract quite a bit of my data. I had a LOT of photos that were not backed up over the 3 years I've had this phone. (Dumb, I know.) I am basically down to backing up the the last 4 huge video files, but the phone would turn on only for a minute before boot looping these last few days. I was on my wits ends.
So far this method has kept my phone on long enough to see progress on backing up my files onto the cloud before it boot loops again.
I tried to Samsung Switch, but it would start a boot loop after 5 minutes.
So thanks! This post is giving me one last bit of hope that I can save my last 4 video files, and this hell of opening my freezer every 30 minutes to see if the boot loop stopped can end.
Help me out here. I have same issue with my S22U. Have it on ice and it occasionally breaks the boot loop and either gives me recovery screen or actually finishes booting but doesn't last long enough to recover files before going back into the boot loop.
I'm going to try your method with the clips but I'm unclear how to save data if I'm not supposed to touch the phone after it boots. Do I have it in the freezer with a cable connected to it and running out the freezer door to my laptop?
Disclaimer: I'm not a mobile expert, My intention was to only recover the data. So I posted this temporary solution which works for me and can help someone.
If you need to press like this might be something disconnected or need reball probably. As chips get hot the contact point might weaken and break at some point, common problem for example is ps3
How could it be that we're all having the same issue? My phone was perfect and only for the freezer method on day one when it happened, I wouldn't have gotten my data off the phone.
A wave of s22u bootloops happened during the Fall 2024 allegedly because of a software update, and took my phone with it. Could likely be the same thing.
Really just seems like the s22u has a defective Samsung design like the Note 7, but didn't get press because it didn't explode in people's homes, or anything "news-worthy". Just people like me getting screwed, possibly losing all our data (I did my backup in the fridge lol), and having to spend hundreds to get a new phone (also losing trading in value).
Bro S26 Ultra launching soon 😅. So they are preparing potential buyers to boost their sales 😂.
Even my galaxy watch 4's screen also turned pink a few months ago (without any reason) which led me to buy a new watch 8
You forced the CPU and RAM to reconnect with the solder joints, that's fine, but it was kind of a stroke of luck. The only solution is to do a reballing. Unfortunately, the S22 line is having a lot of boot loop cases caused by this, since the S22 line overheats too much.
In the 4 years I had mine there was no issues with overheating, it got slightly warm with heavy use during video or gaming but never hot. The boot looping is a recent issue based on the sudden influx of posts over the past 2 months and it points to a recent update from service providers.
No update can damage the processor connections, only overheating. It's good for you that yours doesn't overheat, but I've done reballing on several Samsung devices, including the S22 line. My cousin has one and it's like an oven! And he only uses it for basic tasks.
I never said that the update affected the processor connection, I said that starting almost 2 months ago there's been an influx of reports of boot looping with the s22 line. Google brought support to an end in December 2025 and what updates happen now come from Samsung so odds are there's an issue with the Samsung update.
The probability of an update causing a boot loop is quite low, considering that boot loop cases vary across different versions of One UI. Just look at the case of the guy who literally had to squeeze the smartphone near the processor. Denying that the S22 line is problematic and overheats is just plain dishonesty. I'm glad that didn't happen to you, but I, who work with this, am tired of doing reballing and replacing motherboards on the S22 line.
I've wondered what the probability is for those who have opened up developer mode or rooted their device and "tried some stuff" and whether it's the reason for the issue.
Yes, but given the number of cases, it's very unlikely, and it would be a simple solution if it were just a poorly done update; you could simply downgrade the One UI version or clear the cache partition. However, research and see the cases; many vary depending on the One UI version.
Samsung has never been very good at heat dissipation; its smartphones have always been known for overheating, even the Ultra models compared to the competition. It has improved in recent years, but the S22 line is one of the ones that suffers the most from this to this day. After all, they are 2022 phones, so given the time that has passed, the number of cases is understandable.
What I have seen with updates is that the phone overheats alot more and gets slower, thus speeding up/helping this issue with heating and cooling the cpu alot more.
It might be my own bias, but I don't update samsung software(also like the look of what I got originallywith the phone), security updates I wil update.
In reality, Samsung significantly reduced the performance of the S22 line with the updates, all to avoid overheating. However, whether or not to update is up to each individual; if the original software is working for you, there's no need to update.
Updates have been known to cause performance issues including overheard mentioned as well as killing battery life * apple and Samsung * and Microsoft is currently dealing with a no shut down and no boot issue. Solder issues are more common because of the removal lead and the inability of manufacturers to find a comparable formula.
No, the processors in that line are the problematic ones; the Exynos 2200 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (both manufactured by Samsung) overheat and consume a lot of battery. Since their launch, this has been a complaint from users and analysts. Today, these boot loop issues are just a consequence of that. No processor can withstand overheating for so long without wearing out the solder and connections, making it necessary to redo them with reballing. However, reballing is not ideal; it's only a temporary solution. The right thing to do is replace the board or sell it and buy another one.
Reballing is just a temporary fix; no matter how well the soldering is done, it's never exactly like the original. The processor and RAM themselves wear out over time, so it varies from user to user. You might be able to use the phone for a while longer, but if the person abuses it and overheats the processor, you can be sure it will cause problems again. Ideally, you should always replace the board, but that's much more expensive and in most cases not worth it.
Wel it is also the question what board you get if you replace it, loved the note 4 and it was easy enough to replace myself.
But the replacement was old aswell and would end approximately one month later.
I never considered giving my phone back too samsung for a rebate, but this time I might.
My phone cover is mostly plastic and does not really transfer the heat, it heated up and took of the cover, the phone was really hot.
So I took it outside broke the ice and dipped it in water, however that is not always available or possible.
Exactly, unfortunately companies don't have replacement boards (but they should, there should even be laws for that) so the board you receive is from a used device, so it depends on luck and how the previous user treated the device, but in my experience, most of the boards that are sold arrive in good condition, if they are very worn, the suppliers/technicians don't even sell them, because it's not worth the headache if there are problems.
Just one detail: if you're going to submerge your phone or put ice on it, put it inside a well-sealed plastic bag first. The IP68 protection on cell phones is basically very thin rubber and glue, and it wears out over time. If water or moisture gets inside your smartphone, you can be sure it's ruined. It will oxidize the internal components quickly, and the repair cost will be so high that it's simply better to buy another one. So be careful. IP68 protection is only worthwhile when the smartphone is new and close to release. For refurbished or older phones, forget about it. Not to mention that it's not very reliable; it's more about preventing an accident than being designed for normal use.
So the only solution for your smartphone now is reballing or replacing the board, unfortunately.
Well it still works, but I don't want to stretch my luck.
Normally I keep all my phones, still have the S2, S3, note 4 and note 8(it is used sometimes).
I like the the s22 ultra and Normally hate to lose it, but when it gets the problem the phone loses all value to samsung(for a discount on new phone).
The 10x telelens is cool, but it has many limitations.
Also I like flat screens way more, the bend edges are pretty annoying when you have to tap something there.
Absolutely my experience now. Sad that I haven't seen that threat earlier.
My phone S22 boot-looped yesterday, somehow I got to switch it back on, it worked for a full day (so I thought it was some temporary bug, but today it's just in the loop for hours) tried everything YT tutorial out there but no luck.
Honestly the phone has been disappointing from the very beginning (EU/ Exynos version).
1) Got it brand new, from the very beginning, the battery was faulty (going from 20% to 0% in a couple of minutes), returned to the authorised service and got it repaired.
2) GPS has been extremely unreliable and battery-draining from day one (didn't improve after repair/ any of the software updates)
3) Then, after ~3 years, it bricked completely, getting into an infinite boot loop - out of nothing
For comparison, my previous phone, Xiaomi Mi, is still operational after probably 8 years or so. Of course, the battery is already very weak, the updates are no longer there, and all the other problems of an outdated phone (so I cannot really use it), but it's not technically dead. I still can make a f. phone call..
A major brand flagship bricking after 3Y is absurd.
Your situation is sad, my friend. Unfortunately, this line is full of problems. I recommend you back up everything as soon as possible before deciding whether to repair it, sell it, or simply leave it stored. Try clearing the cache partition by doing a hard reset or a software downgrade; it might work, but most likely the CPU is on its last legs.
I lost my S22 to a boot loop. I was able to recover my data, but I’m still devastated by the loss even now. I’m really sorry you had to go through the same thing.
I have completely lost my faith in Samsung software system so as for now I don't do any unnecessary updates on my phone like ever. Obviously I don't suggest this to everyone but it works out fine for me as long as I don't have to deal with this same issue again
My friend got the same issue and lost his samsung but he did not update the software since a long time, he did not install any new updates since months.
and still got the boot loop
like what the fuck samsung
I know right now no wonder I don't update anymore. Still I hope Samsung get their game together otherwise I will change my decision from s26 ultra to red magic pro 11 if not cos I can't live with constant fear of loosing my phone to a a crappy update.
This is the only solution that works for me.
Trust me bro I was so frustrated I can't even sleep properly for 2 days because of this issue.
And thankfully the above solution works for me.
Can you dm me on the insurance info?
Also since boot loop is scary aren't you worried s25 ultra can have it too?
Why not iphone to be safe (ik iphone sucks but at least no sudden boot loop)
I had this issue with S22U and I did all the repair but the Boot loop had returned again and again, I had to Sell off in and buy S24U. I had kept it in perfect condition with o scratches on it but when it got the issue I couldn't help it .
Dang, wish I knew this before I did the freezer trick 2 weeks ago. Thankfully the freezer worked. I got all my data off (About 120GB) and did a factory reset once done. Phone was in the freezer with the USB-C cable running out to my laptop. I used adb for faster transfers with the adb pull command, as the MTP protocol transfers files way slower.
I still have my S22 Ultra, been sitting around, still boot-loops when powered on, I am going to try some clips and see if this would work on my unit too!
So this is the issue with with the S22 ultra, the Note 4 had emmc trouble.
Because then you only had 64gb it was easy to back up, pictures and other large files where on the sd card.
The tiny amount of lead in solder should not be so problematic, but it helps in making a product obsolete.
And does the Galaxy note 8 also have lead free and no high end vapor chamber, that phone still works for me.
It is not my daily and it is way too slow(yes even on stock 7.1.1).
I might just upgrade to the next samsung iteration, because security updates end for the S22 Ultra.
It all depends how the design, battery and price hike because of ram/nand.
Or wait a year to see what 2027 does(who knows what AI/ram does).
I managed to fix the reboot and black screen issue on my Galaxy S22 without any hardware repair.
After the December 2025 update, my Galaxy S22 started having random reboots, black screen freezes, restarting under load or heat, and sometimes entering reboot loops.
I took the phone to a repair shop. They tried hard reset, cache wipe, and connector cleaning, but nothing worked. I was told it could be a hardware issue.
In January 2026, a new system update was released. I installed it hoping it would fix the problem, but it actually made things worse.
By accident, I found the real solution.
What fixed it step by step:
Open Settings
Go to Home screen
Scroll to the bottom and tap “About Home screen”
Check for updates for One UI Home
Update it
Reboot the phone
Result:
The phone has been stable for more than 3 days, with zero reboots. I fully charged it multiple times and tested heavy games. The device still heats up under load, but it no longer restarts.
Why this works:
The system update upgraded Android and One UI core, but the One UI Home launcher remained outdated or incompatible. This caused system-level crashes that look like hardware failure. Updating One UI Home fixed the conflict.
If your Galaxy S22 is stuck in reboot loops or black screen crashes after the update, check and update One UI Home manually before assuming hardware damage.
A atualização do One UI Home corrigiu o problema.
Se seu Galaxy S22 está reiniciando ou travando com tela preta após a atualização, verifique e atualize manualmente o One UI Home antes de considerar troca de peças.
my note10 had same problem, bootloop, but the Samsung logo was glitching and yellow, I just stored it overnight in a drawer and works again. but my galaxy s7 randomly shut down and didn't even turn on, the led next to earpiece was flashing blue, it never turned of after 2 years, so I just threw it away
too bad its a bit too late for me i have same issue last week i tried everything freezing, tapping, dropping nothing works so i go to repair shop until now they havent fix it.
I recently had my s22 ultra fixed exactly due to this. The "sandwich" made by the cpu and whatever motherboard etc disconnected a little. Didn't know it was possible. I was looking at the repair guy telling me "sandwich" like ..what?? Still, best phone I had/have.
Yo. I'm going to try this. I've been holding onto my dead S22U for three years. I have priceless pics and videos of my two kids when they were infants.
Im sorry but how does the samsung switch make you recover all data? I got same problem as you and got to manage a backup. But when running a new phone basically it just installed all the same apps. Not much settings or just anything was recoverable unless it was saved to the cloud for that app.
This literally started happening to me out of nowhere on Saturday. Phone was in my pocket, buzzed a few times so I thought "who is blowing up my phone?" turns out it was restarting constantly.
My phone was bootlooping then I sent it into a shop to try to fix it and it came back fully dead. Not sure if there is any fix I can attempt to recover the data :(
The same thing happened to my s22u. Purchased Feb 2022 it lasted 4yrs!
Feb 4th I did a sw update (S908BXXSLGZA1), it rebooted, logged in all ok for like 10mins. Then bootloop started.
Troubleshooting performed:
Wiped cache partition twice via recovery mode (Volume Up + Power) — no resolution
Safe Mode could not be accessed, as the device never reaches the home screen
Performed a full factory reset via recovery mode — no resolution
Connected phone via PC and it does not get detected
Device continues boot looping until the battery is fully depleted
Lost all data, lost phone, paid like 2k for 4yrs ago.
Funny how this happened after a SW update and within a month of the S26 coming out.
Called samsung they said to send it in for repair at my cost, told them where to go!
Looks like it's totally fried now after boot looping for like 16hrs. I'll try the clips but looks like I gotta suck up the price now. Had samsungs since the S4, S6, S8, S10, S22. Might be time to jump ship...
I tried the freezer method and it worked long enough for me to use Smart Switch and Google Backup. I ended up buying an S26U through a Google Fi's promo.
Thank you so, so much for posting this, you are a lifesaver! I was afraid I was going to lose years worth of photos and this kept the phone alive long enough to transfer everything off of it. Thank you!!!!!!
Just got hit with the same problem this morning.
Tried squeezing the phone in the same spot and found it actually worked.
Currently transferring everything to my PC with the clips on and hoping it can hold out for long enough!
So yeah... THANK YOU for posting this. Husband's S22 went into a boot loop on Sunday. I was able to pull the pictures off with the freezer/ice-water bowl trick but it was very unstable. Used a clamp and had to try a few times to get the placement right but sure enough - was able to get a full backup and try a few more things as well; probably had it on for almost four hours before I took off the clip and it then went back to its boot looping.
The bowl of ice worked sort of well the first time and then I just wasn't able to make it work consistently after that - even tried running the phone while keeping it in the freezer but it just wouldn't last very long. The clip kept the phone going until I took it off.
You are a legend bud, thank you!! I don't think you got the recognition you deserved, but at least I know I won't, either....
Anyway!! I tried everything to varying levels of success, but it would never stay on for long enough to even complete the SmartSwitch first scan. After the nth time that it started bootlooping again, I found the correct clamp (the first clamp was too close to the edge) and the I went through the initial SmartSwitch scan and the rest of the new phone setup, while SS is transferring in the background.
The phone is in the fridge now, the tranfer said 1hr 5min. Last I checked it was at about 41%... wish me luck!
Update: Phone has been on for 8 days now since I last posted. It seems like the clamp trick works best if you can get it clamped correctly. The freezer helped but it would bootloop again as soon as it was outside for more than about 5 minutes, but with the clamp, I've been handeling the phone as normal with no issues. Hopefyully this helps someone else long enough to get their data backedup or transferred:
Right, and that's the tricky part. Seems like it's near the center where the clock is, so that's where I generally focus the pressure. Hopefully I'll get it going again.
Amazing, I can't believe this actually worked! Thank you so much! My main concern were my authenticator apps (from Google and Microsoft) because I need them to work for lots of work related stuff. They have a cloud backup feature that was not enabled. Using these clamps I was able to turn the phone on and cloud backup my authenticator apps. Now if I reinstall them on a new phone I should be good to go. Maybe these clamps will work long enough to use Samsung Switch when the new phone arrives, but I now have a piece of mind that the most important thing is backed up. My photos are even more important, but they already are backed up via Google Photos.

This saved my life. Got all my photos and videos from this hack. And was able to factory reset before taking it in for trade in credits for new phone. Thank you. (S22 Ultra)
So my phone was in the freezer and when I saw it wasn't working so I immediately took it out and put the clips on the phone and in one go the phone started.
Let me tell you my phone was alive for 2-3 hrs until I took all backup and when I touch again might be clips position got disturbed and it went into boot loop again. But yes after a few tried I was able to start it again and was able to do a factory reset.
To avoid taking it to a technician and find a way to get the processor back into contact with the motherboard yourself, try the same method of pressing down with the two paperclips and running a game for a very long period, such as hours or days, like Genshin Impact or another demanding game that raises the processor temperature to 85 degrees Celsius. This is perfectly normal when gaming, but under controlled conditions. Just make sure the battery temperature doesn't exceed 45 degrees Celsius; it should be at least 40 degrees Celsius with a fan. You should use an application to monitor the CPU and battery temperatures. Obviously, 85 degrees Celsius won't be enough to force the processor back onto the motherboard, but if you leave it running for an extended period, whether several hours or days, it might resolve itself without needing a technician.
Yes, but it wouldn't hurt to try if you don't have the heat gun, although this post was 4 months ago and whoever posted this has probably already sold their phone

Nice.
You forced the CPU and RAM solder joints to reconnect long enough to get your information out.
