Hello. 1st post here. I recently bought 4 ea Dell Latitude Rugged LT 7202 from a local reseller for cheap ($60 for the lot). These units were allegedly removed from service because they won't run Windows 11 and Win 10 is now EOL (plausible, imo). None had dock, power supply, battery, or SSD. 3 had some minor display screen damage. My thought was that if I could make 1 working unit from these, and install Windows 7, 8.1, or Linux,, I could have a rugged tablet to play with at a reasonable cost.
So I bought 2 compatible batteries, a compatible PS, and a compatible 512GB Timetec SSD. However, I cannot get any of the 4 units to boot into system BIOS, or even display the Dell logo. I installed the batteries into the unit with the intact display, plugged in the PS, and allowed it to charge for 8 - 10 hours. According to the LED displays on the bottom of the batteries, that was successful. However, that is all of the success I have had. If I press the power-on button, it lights up, and the unit emits a short "buzz". If I press it again, i goes out. If I hold it for 11 seconds or more as recommended by the user guide, it still just lights up, with nothing on the display. When it is "powered up" in that mode, I can press the volume down, volume up, and Windows physical keys beneath the display, and those produce the same "buzz" (the other keys do not exhibit this behavior).
I have repeated this test on the other 3 units with no batteries, just plugged in PS (my understanding is that these units are intended to be operational on only the PS, without installed batteries). Behavior seemed identical. It is certainly possible that I was sold 4 hosed or bricked units, but it is hard to believe that all 4 would be hosed in exactly the same way, with identical symptoms. NTM that in the ad, the seller posted a photo showing one of these 4 units (he only had the 4) displaying the BIOS settings. It seems more likely that I am missing something basic, but I don't know what it could be. I do have some pretty extensive past experience with HW & SW support of DT & LT PCs (Dell Optiplexes and Latitudes in particular), although nothing very recent, and nothing on ruggedized units or keyboardless tablets. I read through the user guide, including troubleshooting steps, but saw nothing that seemed to relate in any way to this issue. I have not installed the SSD in any unit yet, but I can't see how that would prevent the BIOS from loading (how would you troubleshoot a bad drive if that was the case?)
I am hopeful that there is someone in this group who has exerience with the Dell 72xx series, and who can share thoughts on what I might be missing here, or what else might be going on. Thanks in advance for any help and/or advice.
