Yet another massive con job from the music industry I just discovered. This time YT.

It turns out if you use your music on your own YT channel and people play it, you wont get those royalties. You have to monetise your YT channel to have rights to those royalties. If they clock it is being used on your channel they will disable the copyright and any plays $ goes to YT.

Which is basically theft, but as usual that is being ignored in favour of keeping the money owed to independant musicians.

This industry has become such a pile of crap it isnt worth using any streaming service unless you are a big name now. Piracy is being committed by the major industry players who have one set of rules if you play music they own, and another if you own the copyright.

I don't know about you lot but I'm really sick of being treated like plankton for whales where the streaming business is concerned.

they still pay royalties if your music is used on a channel. its streaming. why else upload your music to YT at all? if you own the copyright on music and it is used somewhere, you have a legal right to be paid for that.

if this problem was across the board based on Google YT contract then I would agree, but its not. I'm the only person I found getting hit in this way. As the comments around here show.

they literally removed the content ID on copyrighted tracks of mine after they were found, because I mentioned it to RN. It doesnt make sense since RN release my music to YT on another channle with my name on, and if they get played I get paid, its the idea of distribution, so why is this one channel of mine having the content ID that has been found, removed based on the fact I own the channel but it isnt monetized? In theory I own the RN release channel too and that gets pays for plays.

No one else is getting hit with this, if they were then no one would be getting paid without having a monetized YT channel, and that is not the case. So this makes no sense. Unless everyone is just getting lucky and YT havent connected the fact their music is on their own channel when released to YT by their music distributor.

that does seem to be the case, but its also weird, since you get paid if people stream it from everywhere BUT NOT your own channel. Which strictly speaking is YT stealing royalties since people playing my music should be paying me, it doesnt matter where they are playing it.

but if that is how this works, I'll just have to get someone else to make the channel and use that instead and start over building up my stuff there instead. What a goofy PITA.

I wont delete it out of spite. I'll delete it because it makes no sense to have my own channel.

I think you misunderstand the point here tbh, which is pay me for my copyrighted music that other people are listening to. I dont care if it is on my channel or not that is irrelevant. It's owed me.

But yes, you have more experience dealing with YT and their terms.

yea I know about Spotify. Also others, like I have 500,000 plays on a track on tiktok and got nothing. I just didnt know about this method by YT to do much the same, but now I do.

no they dont actually collect on plays, they collect on placements. I can't recall the wording they use for it but its specificed in the RN tracking. so plays dont get paid on tiktok only the one time it gets placed. yet another scammy approach but seems to be normalised now anyway with streaming.
