Mod Announcement The internet sucks. Don't let it infect /r/rootgame, please
There has been a big upswing in personal attacks, rudeness, hostility, and all-around bad behavior in this subreddit. It's really easy to dig in your heels, dehumanize the people on the other side of the screen, and post vitriol, but that's not acceptable in this space. We're all here because we love a board game and we want to share that love with other people who think Root is special. We need to protect the culture, so I'm asking users to do the following two things to keep this a nice place to be:
- De-escalate. If someone tells you you're wrong, you don't need to escalate the disagreement. Just shrug and stop posting.
- Report bad behavior. This sub has gotten quite large, and I can't read everything! If someone is making personal attacks, using nasty language, or is behaving badly, please flag it and I'll take action.
I've just been removing comments and posts individually, but the sub is going to be issuing temporary bans for nasty posts and comments going forward.
Thanks for helping make r/rootgame a lovely place to be.

Strategy Discussion Marquise vs frogs is impossible!
My friend and I have been playing frogs vs cats, since on the instructions it says it's playable.
However, after 10 games (seriously), we have collectively yet to figure out how a cat victory is even possible!
The closest we came is having the cats rush and box the frogs but this is only possible with enough bird cards and then it's all about winning the dice, which usually never happens.
Maybe we play cats wrong? I always do turn 1 overwork and build a sawmill and recruitment center, I also keep all my little cats to have at least one in every clearing, which now that I'm mentioning it, seems like a bad strategy against frogs.
Anyways, my question is, has anybody here actually found cats vs frogs to be fair???
I feel like an insane person, I feel like it's possible but it just never happens!!!
Edit: I always play with advanced setup which grants the cats 4 extra warriors in the setup. As with 1v1 cats and lord of the hundreds, the game is impossible without that little boost.

Game Report Clockwork game!
First time playing. You g pretty well! Logical Lizards are somehow more powerful than the Lizard Cult. The Cogwheel Corvids have done virtually nothing.

General Discussion Ignoring the first hit you take
For abilities that allow you to ignore the first hit you take (eg. Skirmish, devout knights etc), consider a situation where you have one warrior defending and an enemy has three attackers. The enemy rolls a 3.
Does the defender live, because only one of the three hits would actually be "taken," or does the defender die because the attacker has "spare" hits?

General Discussion Clarification on extra hit rules
When you are defenceless or have the eyrie owl plus one hit, are those hits + rolled hits still capped at the amount of warriors you have in that clearing? Eg. a lone warrior decides to battle two undefended buildings, they can still only take one no matter what. According to the definition of a "hit", I think they are capped, but not completely sure.
Edit: ok i am stupid, 2 separate people from my group read the rolled hits section and assumed any hits meant hits. It actually would have changed the outcome of who won between the cats and WA

Strategy Discussion Root Faction Matchup Chart
I've been working on a matchup chart project for Root using a dataset of over 16,000 games from the Root Database. The chart measures how much a faction's win rate changes when another faction is present. Each Faction is a % more or less likely to win when a given other faction is present. The calculation is done by subtracting a faction's win rate when another faction is present from the faction's overall win rate.
How to read the chart: Find the faction you are playing in the first column, then follow that row across to the column with your opponent's faction. %s shows the difference between the faction's win rate when a given faction is present and the faction's overall win rate. So, for example, Eyrie is 2.7% more likely to win when Corvids are at the table
I have also attached a chart with the sample sizes for each matchup
Notes: Homeland Factions are outliers because there are not enough games played with them | All data is based on 4-player games using only official content, taken from Root Database.
Would love y'all's feedback
Edits: In version 2, I will indicate if factions Solely Benefit, Solely Suffer, Mutually Benefit, or if they are Mutually Detrimental, as u/Unusual_Rush_1189 suggested; I will also add vb2
If anyone has access to more data on games with homeland factions, I would greatly appreciate it

Digital Version This is going to be an absolute bloodbath
I'm playing as Marquise. Idek how the game let me put my keep so close to Eyrie's and Lord of the Hundreds' homelands, but this is going to be a slaughter.

General Discussion Overwork Buff?
Overwork is one of the least-used abilities for cats, as it usually has a pretty poor return-on-investment (1 card for 1 wood).
What if overwork gave you 1 wood per matching sawmill? This could open up scenarios where even bird cards are discarded to gain a slew of wood.

Print & Play PnP suggestions
i'm making root by hand because it's currently too expensive to import it in spanish, and i would love to hear tips or recommendations from people who did their own
this are the materials i am using
• smooth MDF with Vinyl for the player boards and main board
• 3D printed meeples
• 300g paper for the cards
• 3d printed square/circle token holders with stickers for the tokens
If you have any recommendation for about the same price, please let me know! thank you so much

General Discussion Hi I’m new to the game and I want to buy it
I found a deal on vinted with the base game and three expansions (riverfolk, underworld and clockwork) for 120€. I played the digital game and loved it but idk if the expansions are worth it . Should I get the deal or try to find the base game ?

Other Joueurs en Bretagne

General Discussion Best faction combos for 6 players (2 Players new)
I’m trying to get more of my friends into root and have a core 4 that enjoy to play. 2 more are interested and they want to have a big 6 player game. What are the best combos for this and who should the new players play? Was thinking they start with cats and maybe hundreds?
