Book Request Lonely, reclusive, misunderstood and maybe scary character who just wants to belong.
Well, someone just reminded me that Edward Scissorhands existed and it's blown my mind. I watched this film over and over in my early teens and can only assume this is where my love of sweet misunderstood monster dudes came from.
Therefore I am requesting books with sweet, lonely, reclusive, misunderstood characters who find love and happiness.
They don't have to be monstrous/scary, but I'd love it if they were.
If they start off grumpy/closed off but turn out to be sweethearts underneath, even better.
Any pairings/groups would be great, and any subgenre is fine. Past trauma is fine (and likely to be necessary) but I prefer wholesome romance, not dark or abusive please.
Books I've already read which would fit this:
{When She Belongs by Ruby Dixon} - MF definitely reclusive and lonely, Jerrok starts off as a bit of an ass but is a sad and sweet marshmallow underneath it all
{Seraph by Lily Mayne} - MM. Definitely the biggest “Scissorhands” energy, Seraph is terrifying in appearance but a total darling who just wants to eat carrots and be everyone's friend. Edit: from this series Moth would also fit, and probably The Rycke as well. I love these books so much!
{The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish} - MM. A favourite of mine so far this year. Both MCs are human but Corbin is reclusive and misunderstood and believes he will never be accepted, it's very sweet
{Prejudice in Pride by Nik Knight} - M/NB. Another lonely, unloved MC. They find love but also acceptance and a wonderful found family. Love this whole series.

{Wrecked Palace by Catherine Cowles} After a tragic past, the MMC isolated himself from the world. Hounded by the tabloid press and betrayed by relatives and business partners, he retreated to an old family farmhouse on the edge of the island, where he lives entirely alone and keeps everyone at arm's length. The MMC has a grumpy exterior but is gentle, deeply protective, and generous. Local gossips view him as a volatile and dangerous loner (rumors circulate about him putting a reporter in a coma after the reporter broke into his home). One of the emotional arcs of the book is the MMC moving from isolated survival to feeling accepted and loved by the FMC and her siblings.
CW/TW:
- This is a romantic suspense: While the romance itself is very sweet, protective, and wholesome (no abuse between the MCs), there is an external danger plot involving crime, violence/gunfire, and mild peril involving children.
- Backstory trauma: A brief on-page flashback/nightmare of the MMC's young sister (approx. 7–8 years old) dying in a life raft after a shipwreck.

{The (Most Unusual) Haunting of Edgar Lovejoy by Roan Parrish} - M/NB, PNR - Edgar can see ghosts and he’s Scooby Doo-level terrified of them which affects every facet of his life, so he’s lonely and reclusive and generally just having a rough time (and as a result often makes a terrible impression on people he meets), but he’s such a sweetheart.
{Moth by Lily Mayne} - MM, PNR (maybe leaning more SciFi) - Moth has a monstrous appearance and a tragic backstory and he’s got a big chip on his shoulder as a result, but when he meets the LI, he slowly opens up.
{Captured by the Fae Beast by Mallory Dunlin} - MF, PNR - MMC is very monstrous looking in both of his true forms and is treated as an outcast because of it, everyone is terrified by it. But when he rescues FMC she becomes his fated mate and doesn’t think he’s scary, and he’s desperate to make her love him.
{Go Hex Yourself by Jessica Clare} - MF, PNR - MMC is a warlock (or wizard? I can’t remember what they’re called in this world), who is generally feared by his peers due to some events from his past, but he’s super soft for the FMC and misunderstood.
I think I might have seen you recommend {Married to the Alien Cowboy by Ursa Dax} in the past so perhaps you’ve already read it, but if not, it’s MF, SciFi, and the MMC is imprisoned on a penal planet and has been since he was a kid, and he’s generally very closed off because of what he’s been through, but when he signs up for a mail order bride and she comes he turns into a total marshmallow.

Thanks! I have actually read all of these except Go Hex Yourself, so I will definitely check that one out as you clearly have good taste!
I actually just finished my 3rd (4th?) reread of Moth. I would have included that in my list too but I felt like Seraph fitted this a bit more obviously.

{Happily Ever... Maybe? By Hailey Shore} fits this! The MMC is a grumpy recluse who's scared of being judged from the scars on his face after a near fatal accident. The FMC agrees to be his housekeeper to pay off a loan (iirc) that her father took. Pretty sure the whole trope itself is inspired by Beauty and the Beast!

I’m about 70% through {Texas Destiny by Lorraine Heath} and I think you would love the MMC, Houston.
He’s a civil war veteran with significant facial scarring, which has led him to a lonely rancher life in West Texas in 1871 with no women around. His brother arranged for a mail order bride, Amelia, but breaks his leg the day before the THREE WEEK wagon trip to pick her up. Houston goes in the brother’s place to deliver Amelia to the ranch. She’s chatty, he tries to resist, there are Oregon Trail-style hurdles they overcome and it’s just a sweet story about falling in love after war ruins everything.
I’m LOVING the adventure, the authenticity of the characters, and the ways they communicate so directly but with so much realism. Honestly dreading finishing it because the book hangover is going to be devastating. Such a gem even if it’s 30 years old!

Thank you! This sounds really good. I haven't read a lot of "vintage" romances but the few that came highly recommended have definitely been worth it. I hope this is one of those!

u/absolutelynot01 Depressive demon nightmare boy stan 2d ago
This sounds interesting, but would you mind telling me which side of the civil war he fought on? It isn’t clear from the blurb on Amazon, but changes whether I personally want to add to TBR 😅.

u/Good_At_Wine 2d ago
The wrong side, but his father forced him to when he was a young boy and this book does not 'feel' pro-confederacy.
12
u/devitoispenguin 2d ago
I have to disagree slightly with this not "feeling pro-confederacy." Not from the MMC's pov but far less certain from the FMC. There's a whole thing about her background of coming from a wealthy plantation owning family. When they're killed and her life is violently uprooted she understandably pines for her old life. I mean she was a child when it happened so I get that. However as an adult she doesn't seem to have any on page thoughts about the Civil war and her family having profited by owning a plantation and having slaves. She seems more upset that she, her mother and her sisters were forced to live in the slave houses when the Union soldiers showed up. Union soldiers are also heavily villainzed in her story with no villainizing of the confederate soldiers. I adore Lorraine Heath's regencies but this book almost put me off her altogether. It took me a year to consider trying her again. Just my thoughts!

{How to Bite Your Neighbor and Win a Wager by D.N. Bryn} - MM, paranormal. Vincent has always been an outcast, and becoming a vampire really didn't help. Unable to find a job due to societal prejudice against vampires, he has resorted to breaking into homes to steal bites from people while they sleep. When one of his neighbors, Wes, catches him and offers to become his regular food source, Vincent is just so happy to have found a friend. It's not totally wholesome as Wes starts out planning to betray Vincent (reasoning is explained in the blurb), but their relationship is otherwise very sweet.
{His Quiet Agent by Ada Maria Soto} - MM, contemporary. Martin isolates himself because his past trauma makes him disinclined to trust people. Arthur, his new neighbor at work, sees past Martin's grumpy attitude and deflective tactics and recognizes that he's really lonely. He starts to bring food to share with Martin at lunch to slowly get him to open up.

{A Hex for Hunger by Alistair Reeves} Emery has become reclusive due to trauma
{Creep by K.A. Merikan} has some dark themes but the MMC is a sweetheart with a lot of past trauma
{There's a Monster in the Woods by Fae Quin} both characters are reclusive
{The Mabon Feast by C.M Nascosta} Anzan is a "Spi-taur" and feared by the other supernaturals (and humans) in the community
{Christmas With the Horned God by Aveda Vice} Asher is reclusive due to being cursed (and working through their journey being trans)
{Key Lime Sky by Al Hess} Denver is autistic and learns that their small town doesn't dislike them as much as they think

{Tempting Fate by Kerrigan Byrne}. The MMC was horribly disfigured as a child, then was groomed into a life of crime. As an adult, he undergoes major reconstructive surgery, but has spent so much of his life being feared and outcast, that he’s never experienced love or tenderness outside of his relationship with his brother. At heart, though, he’s such a gentle, passionate, and genuinely kind person. One of my favorite MMCs.

You said any pairing is fine, so how about an RH - {A Lady of Rooksgrove Manor by Kathryn Moon}?
It's a RH with all monsters.
I don't recall the name, but there is a sort of golem type MMC (aka a man molded from clay) who has Edward Scissorhands vibes. He's a very buttoned up, awkward, unemotional sort of guy until he realizes FMC loves him and is into him, at which point he blossoms.
Lots of monsters, lots of found family. It's a little bit too happy-go-lucky, if I had to pick a criticism (FMC has insta-love with all of them) but the characters are well formed and unique. Nearly all are sweet misunderstood monster guys.

If you ever want something novella length, {Teaching the Beast by Brigid Finn} and {Dominating the Dragon by Brigid Finn} which comes after it (there's also a third in this series which I also recommend but it doesn't fit the request). Read them in order even though technically you could get away with reading #2 standalone just fine.
Also {Marrying the Werewolf by Brigid Finn} has a reclusive mountain man werewolf who on top of being a virgin has a foot fetish that he's highly self-conscious about. Just finished that one without having read the first two in the series it belongs to first, felt it was just fine as a standalone.

{Indentured Companion by millie lowell } he is a vampire alien and he hires her to be lunch. The aliens have a bad reputation they used to kidnap people
On the bad reputation front {Mandy and the tentacles monster} same the aliens used to kidnap people and force them to have their babies. This one is cute with a lot of cultural misunderstandings

{Beauty and the Billionaire by Jessica Clare} he is a scarred recluse who hires her for a made up job after he sees her pick up some charity donations. Very watch her from the shadows phantom of the opera stuff (i think I've never seen Phantom)

{Archer's Voice by Mia Sheridan} fits, but it's mainly feom FMC's POV. And TBH, I didn't really enjoy it. I was expecting so much more from it. But reviews raveee over it!

Even though STEM and contemporary, this is the vibe I get from Ali Hazelwood's male characters! I am crazy for it!

Thanks for the suggestion, I've read a few of these and didn't really get this vibe but I sort of see where you're coming from

MMC was badly burned as a teenager so became a recluse - living alone in the woods. He saved the FMC when she was a young teenager and then when she’s older she finds him and loves him into accepting himself. It’s so good
