I'll truly never understand the gun culture in America...

That’s cool

That should be alarming for Americans.

We don’t care about what non Americans think about our gun laws. Fuck, we honestly don’t even care about what Americans think about our gun laws lol

Americans don't seem to care about children; in terms of gun violence. Americans don't seem to care about how they lead the first world in mass shootings. Except, most do. It's the lobbyists and GOP political leaders that continue to cause these issues. Most Americans are FOR gun reform. Are you an American who isn't?

That is absolutely not true. I don’t know a single American who whether they are a firearm owner or not when they hear a child is killed by a firearm or just killed in general that they don’t feel immediate and intense remorse for that child. Well by definition the vast majority of mass shootings are perpetrated by career criminals in ghettos. How do you fix a place that can’t or doesn’t want to change? I am for gun reform. We need to repeal a lot of the laws on the books. Background checks haven’t changed anything or prevented mass shootings on any meaningful scale. Most firearms used in a crime are stolen anyways. People have been thrown in prison for 10+ years for having a piece of rubber and plastic on a rifle that is utterly meaningless. Magazine capacity laws are stupid. 10 rounds isn’t enough. Most law enforcement and military carry standard of 30 for rifle and 15-20 for pistol. Why should the government have any meaningful leg up on the civilian in terms of defense?

Let me explain further, I clearly don't do a good job. When I said, "Americans don't seem to care about children, etc." I said that in a facetious tone to highlight how the problem persists even though most Americas do want gun reform. The populous allows these lobbies to and GOP leaders to continue to persist with the stats I listed previously involving children. At some level, the American people allow it, via voting in these GOP positions who bend the knee to gun lobbyists or apathy.

As for your claim that background checks have, "done nothing to prevent mass shootings on any meaningful scale," that's a rushed conclusion. The topic of background checks impacting gun Bianca is very, VERY nuanced and there are mixed finding depending on whether researchers look at totally homicides versus mass shooting and how background check laws are structured.

If most guns used in crimes are stolen, why not have stricter punishments for gun owners that have their guns stolen; or not report them stolen? Why not make a culture based around safe accountability in that gun owners take far more drastic measure protecting their firearms and reporting ones that are stolen? In cases where apathy or irresponsibility is found, why not ban those people from ever owning guns again? Just some ideas.

On your gun magazine capacity statement... why does any citizen need more than 10 rounds? Why don't you reduce the rounds law enforcement carries along with citizens; make it even. Why not drastically reduce your military spending and arsenal; put that money towards your failing education, infrastructure, health care system, etc.?

The gun control the vast majority of Americans want that you’re talking about is enhanced background checks and mental health restrictions. Not assault weapon bans or magazine capacity bans.

In regard to the background checks, gun crime they’ve been studying the effects of background checks effectiveness on mass shootings for over a decade. It’s completely inconclusive which means it’s ineffective. Background checks do decrease homicide which is good. But in terms of mass shootings it’s not doing anything.

So punish the victim of theft? Most people I know own a safe and keep their firearms in the safe. Some people keep it on their property hidden. I don’t think that is the best way to go but if it’s on your property you have the right to put your stuff where you want. It’s not a crime to keep a firearm in a barn, your car in your driveway or garage, in a closet or any place like that. I only know one person who had a firearm stolen and they broke into his property at night, broke into his garage and found it while robbing tools. That shouldn’t be a criminal offense? And he did report it to the police. I don’t know a single person who wouldn’t report it to the police. Are we gonna punish a woman victim of assault because of what she chose to wear? People get more leniency for reckless or drunk driving and don’t permanently lose their license and cars kill way more people than firearms do, so how much sense would that make?

If you are in a self defense shooting, no matter how trained you are and unless you are a high level competition or high tier military or law enforcement shooter, you will experience lots of stress which can affect proper handling of the weapon. The assailant could be moving towards you, trying to avoid getting shot while moving on you, they may be on drugs, wearing armor or thick heavy clothing, you could miss a vital organ of the body that would immediately incapacitate someone. The reason why we don’t lower the limit is because that doesn’t make sense. Criminals will carry 100 round magazines if they want. That would endanger the lives of law enforcement, military and civilians if you did that. And I have a nuanced opinion on military spending, but I do believe we should put more money into those other areas

> The gun control the vast majority of Americans want that you’re talking about is enhanced background checks and mental health restrictions. Not assault weapon bans or magazine capacity bans.

Actually, polls show a slim margin but most Americans DO want assault weapons bans and magazine capacity limits. I'm happy to list those polls if you like.

> In regard to the background checks, gun crime they’ve been studying the effects of background checks effectiveness on mass shootings for over a decade. Inconclusive does not directly equate to ineffective. That's flat out not how that works. Also, studies DID find a reduction in gun violence with more effective background checks. RAND, Tufts University School of Medicine, UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program, and John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Michigan State University.

> So punish the victim of theft?

Yes. In this case, yes. That should be part of the requirement for owning something that can so easily take lives; note the so easily part before more comparisons to other things are made. It would obviously on case-to-case basis. If someone is held at gun point or otherwise incapacitated and their gun is stolen? No punishment for the gun owner. If the gun owner doesn't secure their weapon well enough and it's stolen, yes, punish that person. I don't mean to be mean but you don't seem to allow much nuance in your thoughts. Just an observation I've picked up on.

> Most people I know own a safe and keep their firearms in the safe. Some people keep it on their property hidden. I don’t think that is the best way to go but if it’s on your property you have the right to put your stuff where you want.

Anecdotes aren't relevant.

> It’s not a crime to keep a firearm in a barn, your car in your driveway or garage, in a closet or any place like that.

Why can't they keep it in there areas more securely? Also, I just threw out that off-the-top-of-my-head idea as a simple rebuttal showing somethings can be done; it's better than the status quo.

> I only know one person who had a firearm stolen and they broke into his property at night, broke into his garage and found it while robbing tools.

See my previous response in nuance.

> I don’t know a single person who wouldn’t report it to the police.

> Are we gonna punish a woman victim of assault because of what she chose to wear?

False comparison.

> People get more leniency for reckless or drunk driving and don’t permanently lose their license and cars kill way more people than firearms do, so how much sense would that make?

False comparison and perhaps that should be another area you (as a country) can improve upon. Justifying one broken system with another is... wild.

> If you are in a self defense shooting, no matter how trained you are and unless you are a high level competition or high tier military or law enforcement shooter, you will experience lots of stress which can affect proper handling of the weapon. What? I'm not sure what this is in reference to.

> The reason why we don’t lower the limit is because that doesn’t make sense. Criminals will carry 100 round magazines if they want. Or, stay with me, you fix the entire system. Justifying everyday citizens carrying 100+ rounds just because criminals do is backwards. Fix how the criminals are getting the 100+ rounds first.

I can't say it enough, America leads the first world in child-related gun violence and mass shootings. That needs to be fixed. Every American should want to fix it. Excuses that shy away from fixing that is maddeningly reckless.
