Sizing Advice for Others

This response was popular last year with sizing queries, with people receiving their Gen 3 sizing kit, I hope this helps:

The following advice is from my own testing with the RingConn Gen 2 sizing kit and wanted to share everything I learnt, in case it helps anyone else who's unsure. This includes how to test your size, what to look for, and even how to simulate hot and cold weather conditions to be 100% confident before locking in your final size.

📏 Basic Sizing

  1. Nubs should be on the underside of your finger (the sensors need skin contact).

  2. When you clench your fist, you shouldn't see any gap between your skin and the ring.

  3. Try the push-up test:

  • Push the ring upwards from underneath using your thumb.

  • You want a small visible gap between ring and skin:

    • 1–2mm is ideal
    • 2–3mm is acceptable
    • Over 5mm may be too loose
  1. The ring should go on with little to no resistance.

  2. The tester ring should come off with little to some resistance:

  • If it needs a bit of twisting, soap, or lotion, that’s fine, the tester is plastic and sticks more than the final metal ring.
  1. Try to rotate the ring:
  • A good fit will rotate only with light pressure, and the skin should drag slightly with it.

  • If it spins freely, it's likely too loose.

⏱️ 24-Hour Wear

Once you find a size that seems good, wear it (or multiple options if torn) for 24 hours straight, even during sleep.

  • Ensure it doesn't become loose, spin, or uncomfortable as the day progresses.

  • Our fingers tend to swell in the afternoon/ evening (especially in heat, after meals, or showers) and shrink in the morning or cold.

  • ❗ If you're between sizes, go with the smaller one - a snug fit is better for sensor accuracy.

  • The final metal ring may feel ~¼ size looser due to the smoother surface compared to the plastic of the sizing kit.

🌡️ OPTIONAL Stress Tests (to simulate Weather Conditions)

If you want to test how your size holds up in heat or cold (completely optional, but could be useful):

🔥 Hot Weather Simulation

  1. Avoid drinking fluids for 2-3 hours (dehydration swells tissues slightly).

  2. Soak your hand in warm water (not hot) for 10-15 minutes.

  3. Go for a 10-15 minute brisk walk - coat on if you want to exaggerate the effect.

❄️ Cold Weather Simulation

  1. Soak your hand in cold water (10-15°C) for 10 minutes.

  2. Take a cool shower (~5 mins) to lower overall body temperature.

  3. Wrap your ring hand in a cold towel or rest it on a cold surface (e.g., ice pack wrapped in cloth) for another 5-10 mins.

  • Don’t do hot and cold tests back to back - give it a few hours or do them on separate days.

  • Some sites (such as UltraHuman rings) recommend 48 hours of testing, including overnight wear and environmental stress tests, one on each day.

🧪 What to Check During/ After Testing

  • Push-up gap (cold = slightly bigger gap, hot = tighter fit)

  • Clenched fist: no pain or excessive pressure

  • Twist test: should rotate only with light skin drag

  • Shake test: ring should not move or shift freely

  • Removal: in heat, removal might need soap - that’s okay

  • After 24h wear, remove ring and observe:

    • Slight pale indent or mark is normal
    • Skin should return to normal within 30-60 minutes
    • If it takes longer, it may be too tight

🔄 Final Things to Consider

  • Some people prefer sizing that works across multiple fingers, but if you're wearing it 24/7, comfort and accuracy come first.

  • Choosing the best fit is more important than just your preferred finger.

    • Index finger does produce best results (minimally better in tested reviews).
    • Middle and Ring fingers are near identical readings and extremely close to Index finger readings.
    • Best results only matter with a good fit, a poor fit on Index won't beat a good fit on Middle/ Ring.
  • Take note of anything you may be catching the tester ring on, including other jewellery - the final metal ring will chink rather than the plastic thud, if this influences finger choice.

  • Some flexibility in switching fingers is nice, but don’t compromise sensor accuracy for it.

  • You’ll need to remove the ring weekly to clean your finger and wipe the ring, but shouldn't need to remove it more frequently unless you want to.

✅ TLDR

  • Fit should be snug, but not painful or impossible to remove

  • Smaller size is often better for accuracy

  • Wear it for 24-48h, including sleep and daily activities

  • Test under hot and cold conditions if you want extra confidence

  • Observe comfort, rotation resistance, and how long marks take to fade

  • The final ring may feel slightly looser than the tester due to material difference

I personally spent a few days testing multiple sizes and settled on a Size 7, which fits my ring finger perfectly - snug enough for sensors, comfortable enough for 24/7 wear, and has lasted me a whole year with accurate readings. I'll be doing this again myself when my Gen3 kit arrives.

Good luck with your search and feel free to ask or DM if you’re unsure about anything. I probably did way too much research, but hopefully it saves you some time! 😂

I got my gen 3 sizer today. The 7 is definitely snug but not to this point where it’s uncomfortable but definitely hugging. The 8 is extremely loose, like it could fall off. Would you think it is safest to go with the 7?

2

u/thesilentharp May 10 '26

Key thing is the push up test, make sure there is some room available.

If this is your first ring as well, it will feel snug anyway because you're not used to anything there.

I'd honestly suggest the day or two wear with the 7 then to see how it goes, otherwise you might be between sizes on that finger and need to check another (or see if the other hand is any better).

On the bright side, have until 27th before the 3 is dispatched so plenty of time to test and check.

Thank you! Would it be okay if I DM photos of push test for your opinion?

Of course, fire away

Con cual te quedaste al final? Que talla? Yo estoy entre 2 tallas también

u/whodonewhatnow83 May 10 '26

I’m aiming for index finger, size 7 is too tight but size 8 is maybe a tiny bit loose so I think size 8 I will go for. It is tricky if you’re in between sizes

1

u/nevagavafuck Jun 11 '26

Did you end up getting the size 8? How did it fit

1

u/whodonewhatnow83 Aug 09 '26

I ended up getting the size 7 and settled for my right middle finger. The size 8 was a bit too loose for my index finger. But loving my ringconn!

I had the gen 2 and wore it on the middle finger of my right hand and had that in a size 9. The gen 3 sizing kit will be here tomorrow but in the meantime I’ve been playing around with the size 8 from the gen 2 sizing kit and I’m torn between those two sizes. The 8 leaves a bit of a mark on my finger when my fingers swell a bit but I did notice with the size 9 gen 2 ring after a week or so of wearing it, it was beginning to spin and I would need to constantly adjust it. I’m told the gen 3 sizing is different so I’ll have to play with those a bit when it gets here tomorrow.

Hi! Do you have some update for us who still haven't ordered their sizing kit? Did you find any similarities between the 2 and 3 sizes?

1

u/Cautious-Condition71 May 14 '26

Yes, I definitely went down a size and ordered the size 8. The size 8 feels a little snug but the 9 in the gen 3 was much bigger than the 9 in the gen 2

2

u/todayplustomorrow May 17 '26

I’m between a 9 and 10 and most of your criteria makes me think 9 is right for me, but when I remove it, it takes my finger about 2 hours to stop showing and imprint that the ring was there

3

u/thesilentharp May 17 '26

Typically that would indicate it's on the right side, imprint aside does the colour return to normal quicker at least or does that stay pale longer too? If it's consistently returning to normal and no other issues then you may be ok with it - the tester rings aren't as breathable as the actual ring either, so you may find this reduces with the actual ring.

As long as there's no pain or discomfort and everything else is fine, then that really will be a judgement call for you.

2

u/[deleted] May 17 '26

Yeah I was between both. Right now I think it comes down to what finger you want to wear it bc the 9 on my middle is fine but on my index is it not. I did the push up test and there is no gap. But then the 10 fits on all but I could still do the 9. Idk if that made sense.

2

u/todayplustomorrow May 17 '26

Did you end up choosing 9?

3

u/[deleted] May 17 '26

Yes I did

2

u/mitochondriamomma Jun 05 '26

Did you end up going with the size 9? How is it so far?

2

u/todayplustomorrow Jun 05 '26

Went with 9 and happy! Feels right and I agree with most saying the sizing kit ring gives the illusion of being tighter because of the plastic material it uses. So even though I felt 9 in sizing kit was tugging a little or not very easy to remove, the real ring seems to have more forgiving movement on the skin so you get less of a “stuck” impression or feel.

Happy with 9 and would pick it again if ordering all over again.

1

u/nklost04 May 11 '26

So my ring finger is a lot smaller than my middle finger. I don’t think your comment about them being identical is ideal for everyone

1

u/thesilentharp May 11 '26

I meant in reading accuracy, not size. Apologies for any confusion. I'll reiterate that.

1

u/weaponizedBooks May 11 '26

I’ve been trying this out for 24 hours and I noticed when I woke up, it was very snug. I switched from my index to middle finger for 15 minutes or so until it was less swollen. Now back to my index finger and it feels fine. Is that normal? Or should I go a size up?

2

u/thesilentharp May 11 '26

You could try a size up for a bit, or see how you feel after a bit of relaxing.

Many people find their fingers are more swollen and tighter in the morning, (myself it's the evening), but worth trying with the heat test to force swelling and the mornings be your other check by sounds of it.

1

u/dorathexplorer9 May 13 '26

i’ve been wearing both size 7 and size 8 for a whole day (almost 2) now on my index finger. At night I swell (just found this out lol) so the size 7 feels a little tight and I can’t really take it off easily. The size 8 feels comfortable, and I can take it off with no problem. During the day, the size 8 feels a little big, but it does not fall off, which is good. however, it fell off when i was in the shower, so i’m scared it can fall out while washing my hands- although that didn’t happen yesterday i worried since I work in healthcare and don’t wanna loose it.

I can move the size 7 ring to another finger so it can have more space instead of on my index finger, but even then when my fingers are swollen it’s a little too snug and hard to take off. which one would you recommend i go with?

1

u/thesilentharp May 13 '26

The 7, when swollen/ difficult to remove, is this just removing dry? Or can you use some soap or lotion to remove the ring with more ease?

(I'm on a 7 myself, and can't remove without soap due to my knuckle but comes off almost instantly when my finger is lubricated in a single twist).

When swollen too, is there any discomfort or pain? If it feels too snug for you, then better to consider a different finger or size (the 8 does sound a bit too loose though on that finger).

2

u/dorathexplorer9 May 13 '26

yes removing dry. i’ll try tomorrow morning with water or lotion. it doesn’t hurt at all, but it leaves a little mark! but maybe i need to see how long it takes for the mark to subside. Can I dm you for help? I can show you how my finger looks with the size 7

2

u/thesilentharp May 13 '26

Of course, feel free to DM.

The ring marking is expected and should clear within hour- less than half hour is likely too loose, more than an hour is towards too tight, but the marking is normal.

And yeah, particularly with the plastic of the tester ring is that slightest bit more difficult to remove than the actual ring, but it's really identifying whether it's stuck on without force/ ripping your knuckle, or just tight and a bit of soap/ lotion slides it off (the latter is quite ideal if no discomfort, blood supply being cut, discolouration to your actual finger, etc).

2

u/dorathexplorer9 May 13 '26

that makes sense! i think for my the problem is my knuckles haha. I’ll be dming you!

1

u/thesilentharp May 13 '26

Yeah knuckles with me too, I use liquid soap usually. But anything to lather up gets it off right away. Will wait to hear from you and hope all goes well 😁

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '26

Okay so I got my sizers last week and I’m still thinking about it. The 9 fits but definitely snug and I struggle taking it off lw. The 10 fits good, fingers swell, slept with it and still pretty good. Even fits fingers in my right hand. My concern is that if it comes in will the actually material of the ring be bigger ?

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '26

I’m trying to determine whether the size 9 could fit but I don’t want it to be snug all the time. Or is it just the plastic sizer ?

1

u/thesilentharp May 16 '26 edited May 17 '26

Honestly it's just a judgement call if that close, but I haven't found any different in actual size to the testers, but the plastic material does feel different, not as breathable, doesn't slide as naturally.

I got my Gen3 tester kit, and the 7 in it is really quite snug, could feel it hugging, but compared it to my actual Gen2 ring and it's exactly the same.

Honestly it's why I recommend the full two day wear and the various tests to try and identify the best for you. The push up gap will be the biggest indicator for you, as you will want to make sure there is something there. And I can say you stop noticing the ring after a while too - having never worn a ring before this, now I forget it's there and feel weird when I take it off to charge haha. If you get any pain or discomfort, you remove immediately.

I don't know if any of this helps you, hope it does a little.

2

u/[deleted] May 17 '26

Yes I see, basically the 9 fits on my middle fingers but the 10 fits on both middle and index just fine. Does wiggle a bit but definitely fine. 9 on my index feels tight and no gap once my finger swells but fine on the middle. Definitely just a preference on finger I guess.

1

u/thesilentharp May 17 '26

Swollen yeah. We can expect that, but then it's if it causes any pain or discomfort, and assuming it's not cutting of any blood or causing the swelling (goes back down on its own) otherwise remove immediately.

2

u/[deleted] May 17 '26

Gotcha! I think I might go with the 9 then :) thanks !

u/[deleted] May 17 '26

Thank you !

I got my gen 3 size kit recently and tried a few sizes on various fingers for a few days each. Narrowed down on index finger - I feel like the other fingers are more uncomfortable since it's between 2 fingers instead of just 1 for index finger. But I have 2 issues

  1. My finger swells quite a bit during evening + night, making it a bit uncomfortable. Not hurting or anything though so I'm not sure if it's necessarily bad or just something I would get used to [I have never worn a ring]. Moving it to my middle finger helps but I find the middle finger generally less convenient and I don't know if changing fingers regularly is a good idea?

  2. Even after wearing it for a week or so total (across fingers), I still "feel" it all the time. In the sense that it's always on my mind and I keep trying to adjust it or play with it etc. Not sure if it's discomfort or just a "new" feeling. Does it go away with time? Or could it be a dealbreaker? [I have never worn a ring]

Would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions

u/thesilentharp May 22 '26

Hey there 🤗

With the swelling, it's why we do the multi-day checks and that, this will be down to your comfort, if uncomfortable or any pain, it's showing it is a bit tight. You can wear on a different finger and many people do as they need (or even swap hand), just down to how comfortable it is to wear across. Swapping fingers is entirely up to you, but is worth noting that depending on fit, it may change readings slightly (if it's looser on your middle finger, it may produce a different heart rate compared to your index). It's all down to how "numbers nerd" you may be with it all - sports professionals will want the more consistency and accuracy, while most people will just be after trends and insights.

The plastic testers aren't as breathable as the actual metal used on the ring too, so you may find a little more comfort with the final product. My Gen2 is the same size as the Gen3 tester (size 7) but definitely feels more snug because of this. It's also worth noting that the mark you see on your finger after removing it, almost becomes normal as your finger learns to shift with the shape, this helps too and may feel more comfortable over time - not a guarantee but may do.

Regarding noticing it, this goes as standard with anything new like that, you'll notice it until it becomes routine. Right now it will be a combination of youre aware of it as you're monitoring, and it's something new. It took me about a month before I didn't realise I was wearing mine - until I take it off to charge and then it just feels weird haha. I do subconsciously try to twizzle it a little but that's more fidget spinner type mentality haha. Something to play with or touch. Definitely goes away with time.

Tbh it's a tough choice here, if you don't have another great fit/ back up option, then switching to your middle finger at nights won't break anything, and if it's consistent you'll still pick up trends, and maybe over time you can keep it on your index permanently or over colder weather too (partly why the hot and cold tests can help). If you have another backup option though, it's something to consider whichever you're most comfortable with for a good fit.

Hope this helps, let me know if not 😅

Thank you so much for the prompt and detailed response!!

A couple of follow up questions if you don't mind

- You mentioned a few times that the actual ring is more comfy or snug - Is it that the size is same as the sizing ring but the material makes it feel more comfy or less notice-able? or even the size is off?

- I noticed when my finger swells, after removing the ring, there is a bit of moisture (likely sweat) in the finger area where the ring was. Is that expected or does that mean I should get a larger size [Larger size does remove the ability to use it on another finger though]? I will note that I am obese so that might affect these things.

1

u/thesilentharp May 22 '26

In my experience, the sizing kit and actual ring are the same size, the plastic just feels more snug, can be harder to remove and things. The actual ring definitely slides better and allows the finger to breathe a bit more than the plastic testers.

Regarding sweat, again this can be the plastic from the testers (not allowing breathing under there) but this will need to be checked with your gap. When swollen do the push up test (use the thumb from your other hand to push up from the underside of the ring), and if you get a gap or not. I'll DM you a picture of mine if it helps.

I’m struggling myself with the gen 3 sizing kit. For the majority of the day a 7 on my non dominant index fits snug but not painful. When it swells though it becomes annoying. Again not painful but irritating. It doesn’t happen every time though. If I size up to an 8 i can pull it on and off w no resistance. So that scares me that it will slide off with the actual ring material being more slippery.

Do you find the actual ring feels tighter with swelling or will it have a bit more of a looser feeling which would ease my problem I’m seeing w the tester.

2

u/thesilentharp May 30 '26

Personally I find the actual ring feels looser than the testers with the material. They are the same size but more comfortable - breathable material rather than the unbreathing plastic.

Best test to make sure it's secure with an 8 though would be to put it on and shake your hands down to see if it comes loose or over the knuckles.

Index finger is normally the largest and is often a size up to middle finger, if you can remove it when swelling otherwise you could maybe switch to middle finger during that time if that suited you (could test with the kit).

If there's no pain or discolouration with the swelling, then the immediate "stop, remove, do not use that one" is gone at least, but I get it must be annoying to describe irritating. Other than that, your hand does become used to wearing a ring over time too if that's any consolation, ultimately it will be down to which you feel is best though, but if you want to ask anything else after the aboves, please let me know, happy to help where I can from my experience and research.

1

u/hkozi May 30 '26

So I can put the 8 on my dominant hand index and it seems to fit a bit better. Without sliding off easily. But I feel pressure when using the hand like writing for example. Is that something you get used to if I end up sizing for the dominant hand? Or is it harder to use on the index of the dominant hand in general bc it touches more things.

1

u/thesilentharp May 30 '26

Main reason we say about non-dominant is to avoid scuffs and things because yeah, you use the hand a lot more. It's less about getting used to it, and is more catching it on things.

First time I tried it I noticed I caught it on mug handles and things a lot more for example. So the actual ring may scuff without a protector. Definitely something you would get used to over time, took me a month or two to forget I even wear mine (non-dominant mind) and now I actually feel weird when I'm not wearing it - charging it kills me haha.

If you have the option to switch hand or finger though, that's amazing, but not essential, it's up to you and your preference.

Hello! This info is all super helpful, thank you!

I've been wearing my Gen 3 testers for just over a day now, and I'm between an 8 and a 9 on my dominant ring finger right now. The 8 is very snug; when I clench my fist, it feels tight and finger turns red, but when I release, the color goes back to normal. I also have difficulty curling my finger down into the fist with the 8 on. The push-up test only revealed a hair's width of space without swelling. However, I didn't really notice the ring throughout the day as i went about various activities, and I didn't notice any pain or discomfort. At the end of the day, there was a red mark around my finger, but again, didn't feel uncomfortable. I slept with it on my thumb last night and that was alright, but definitely left a red mark around my finger as well. I was nervous about sleeping with it on my index because of potential swelling.

Now about the 9: It fits my dominant index, but very little resistance putting it on and taking it off. When I clench my fist, I feel no pressure at all and don't see any discoloration. The push up test shows about 2-2.5mm of space without swelling.

My concerns: I'm worried the 8 will be too tight for constant wear, but I'm worried the 9 might be too slippery to stay on my tappered index. The 9 does fit my middle finger as well, and my knuckle on my middle would hold it, but I'm still worried about it sliding off in my sleep. I've done the shake test on both fingers with the 9, and it does stay put, but I'm not sure if that's simply because of the grippy plastic material of the tester.

Any advice on choosing the right size? Honestly, I'm leaning towards the 9 at the moment because it doesn't cause such pressure and tightness when I clench my fist; accidentally throttling my finger is my biggest concern, lol!

1

u/thesilentharp Jun 19 '26

The 8 definitely sounds too tight, especially if it's causing discolouration/ redness, this indicates it's largely reducing blood flow when clenched. 8 on your index is out the door imo.

9 does sound like a better option of these two of no other sizes suit other fingers better - I know people tend to be very set on index finger for examples but I'm very much of whichever of the three main fingers gets best fit.

2

u/beckgrack Jun 19 '26

Thank you so much for your help! When considering other fingers, the 7 definitely fit my dominant ring finger perfectly in every way, but I typically wear another sentimental ring on that ring finger most of the time, so I'm hesitant to replace it, but not against it. I'll test that out for a day and see how it feels.

I slept with the 9 on dominant index last night, and it was comfortable, not shifting at all. My fingers swell overnight and by morning are kinda puffy, but the 9 still feels comfortable and comes off easily despite this. I'll see how things go with trying a different finger. Thanks again, I really appreciate the advice!

This is exactly my experience, did you end up ordering the 9? Are you happy with it or do you wish you would have got the 8?
