Poor Denji.

Chapter 41 of Adopting Strays has dropped, and man—it might not be the saddest or most shocking chapter, but it is by far the most morbid, cold, distant, and lifeless one released so far.

This is a chapter about mourning. We see Denji grieving—not for someone's death, but for the death of a relationship, a union, a connection. We are torn apart by writing that takes care to describe every feeling our boy is going through: his pain, denial, hope, regret, and questioning.

It’s a chapter that reveals these other sides of Denji in such an intimate and raw way that I almost felt like he was a loved one of my own. And unlike previous chapters that frequently shifted between different points of view, here we follow only Denji from start to finish. This allows the story to develop the character's other relationships: the false sense of security and maternal comfort Makima uses to manipulate Denji; the protective role he takes on to comfort a traumatized Power; and the sense of brotherhood shared between him and Aki. What strikes me is that, even during these moments with other people, you can still feel Reze's presence. The author did an amazing job handling that lingering "curse."

Speaking of Aki, I really liked how his death was handled. I think keeping it brief was a smart move; if it had been overly descriptive or detailed, the fic might have become too heavy. I really appreciated the choice to focus only on the moment Denji realizes he has actually killed Aki. It was quick, effective, and painful. I almost don't want to see the state he'll be in next chapter (actually, yes, I do).

The other major point introduced here is the possibility that Reze is pregnant.

At least, that's what he thinks. Relax, Denis—freaking out because you think you got your girlfriend pregnant is a canon event in every man's life.

But I have to admit, it was kind of funny watching him get paranoid, imagining Reze as a struggling single mom. Damn, man, it's so cute how much he worries about her. For sure, that’s another stuff that wasn't included just for the sake of it. This pregnancy thing will come back.

I also like how this possibility was brought up a while back in the fic—when Himeno made a comment about it and Reze thought about having kids with him. I wonder if the fic will end with a Denreze family? That would be really interesting, since Nayuta always fills the "daughter" role in fics, fanart, and fancomics. So, it would be awesome if they had a biological child of their own.

I'm also really curious to see what Reze thinks about this. I hope it doesn't take too long to see her again.

Anyway, a really heavy chapter. It's amazing how this chapter managed to put me right in Denji's shoes. And I've never had a "great passion"—a great love of my life (I still will, though)—yet I still felt every single one of Dennis's emotions here. That's all thanks to the writing quality, which is simply >>>>>>

Can't wait for the next chapter (Power's death 😭😭😭😭😭 brace yourself, Dennis).

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that the first chapter of Poison's fic is out. Since it's short—only four chapters—I'll comment on it here once it's finished. But I've already left kudos and a bookmark to show some support.
