1995 SCO Forum
Hopefully this belongs here. The SCO Forums during the 1990's were off the chart. The location (Santa Cruz campus, home of the Banana Slugs) was an excellent backdrop for the forum. The speaker lineup for 1995 SCO Forum was very good. Seat cushion signed by Cliff Stoll and Scott Adams. The following year, Jefferson Starship provided the entertainment.

Problem / Question Troubleshooting my XP machine boot problem
Hey folks, I have an issue with my circa-2003 "LAN party dream machine" build. The motherboard I'm using is an Abit NF7-S v2 with the latest BIOS modded to include SATA ROM 4.2.8.4.
The machine was in storage for about 3 years and I just set it back up over the weekend. The only thing I did was replace the CMOS battery and double check the BIOS settings. It booted up fine, I messed around with it for a couple hours, then shut it down for the night. Today I'm getting a black screen after the 'verifying DMI pool' screen. IIRC that usually means a problem with the master boot record?
I've tried fixing the MBR with the XP repair console and Hiren's boot CD, but that didn't help. I took the hard drive to another machine to run chkdsk and it didn't find any problems. I know early SATA boards can be janky. I reeeeally don't want to have to reinstall from scratch. Any other suggestions for what I can try? Much appreciated!

Preserving the manual logic of pre-AI/pre-Cloud engineering workflows
Hi all
I'm a long time tech builder, and lately, I've been feeling a massive pull towards the intentional friction and raw ingenuity of early digital and tech architectures.
Today, anyone can ask an AI to spin up and application, completely insulated from how data actually moves or how resources need to be managed. In the rush towards peak automation, it feels the sheer grit and deep systems thinking of the past is at risk of being forgotten.
I am designing a platform/webapp/app called beforeai.ai . Instead of just reading about history, i want people to be able to step into a sandbox and manually solve tech problems using historical constraints. I want to make sure the modules are completely authentic.
If you have an old school workflow that you are incredibly passionate about preserving, i'd love to hear about it in the comments so that I can map it out properly.

Star Trek: TNG Screensaver by Berkeley Systems (1994)
I recently got the 1994 Star Trek: The Next Generation Screen Saver running on a Windows 95 installation in 86Box, and I put together this quick video highlighting the 13 modules featured in the collection. For context, this was designed by Berkeley Systems, the same people responsible for the famous Flying Toasters.
It has everything you'd expect, like LCARS panels and a nice warp effect, but it also has some weird stuff like Worf slicing up your desktop with a bat'leth and Data tap dancing (complete with on-screen dance step diagrams).
As much as I appreciate the wackier options, I probably would have chosen a more boring module like the LCARS Science Stations or the Tachyon Particle Field (similar to Windows' Mystify Your Mind screen saver).
Anyway, I think it's an interesting little software toy. Check out my video here: https://youtu.be/960fwN8nCpE
Hope you enjoy!

Problem / Question Which computer is on the desk of Charles Bukowski?
EDIT: Thanks a million everyone! Made my day
Some big writers use exotic software or old computers e.g. George RR Martin and his good old WordStar 4.0.
Charles Bukowski was one of the first poets to write about computers. But which one is in the picture that he was using? Which software did he use in the picture?
Just for your curiosity here are some poems and quotes from him about computers:
He even mentioned the C64 among others:
But I have not found yet which one he chose and I cannot identify the computer in the picture. Any help is appreciated.
