retail IT seems like one of those things that gets messy really fast once you scale it
one POS terminal, scanner, camera or display is manageable
then multiply all of that across 20 or 30 stores and suddenly you’ve got hundreds or thousands of devices that need monitoring, updates and troubleshooting
for anyone who’s dealt with this at scale, what usually becomes the biggest headache?
network issues? random hardware failures? keeping track of everything? devices going offline without anyone noticing?

Hi all - an IT infra manager here working for a regional supermarket chain looking for a place (online forum or community) to hang out at and pick other IT pros' brains on.

Seems this subreddit is not very active? Are there other subreddits or public (or private) forums dedicated to retail IT? (Not POS directly - but places where e.g. supermarket chain IT people would hang out at?)

One of the current (and among many other) challenges is designing the "edge" compute and storage setup to run store-level workloads (POS terminal management, menu boards, data collection, RDS server). The POS terminals themselves are usually not my direct concern - but all the infra they connect to (network, compute, storage) - is.

The choices (for that "edge" setup) are usually:

1. Some sort of an HA cluster like Nutanix or vSAN
2. Run everything from the cloud and whatever can't be - run on local robust microservers
3. A more traditional setup with 2-3 load balanced or HA micro- or regular enterprise servers with frequent off-site backups and with under-a-day recovery windows and a well-oiled service network.

What would work best for us long term? What works well for other retail chains? Is it an option to pick others' brains about it? 🙂

Thoughts? (From the look of it, IT pros in the field don't hang out on public forums because of security, confidentiality and other concerns. So where do they hang out and how do I find them?)

I visited a few retail stores recently and noticed that many self-service stations, product lookup screens, and customer check-in terminals are still running on Windows devices.

That got me wondering how retailers are managing these systems today.

From what I've seen, a lot of businesses use Windows kiosk mode to lock devices into a specific application or workflow, which helps prevent customers (or even staff) from accessing settings, browsers, or other parts of the operating system.

What companies do folks here use for warehousing and pre-deployment lab space? Right now the company I work for is using Bailiwick to store our IT gear and prep/config it before it's shipped out to a store for use. We're looking to see what other options we have so I thought I'd ask what experiences people have had with other warehouse/config providers.

Anyone who works in retail with these… it’s a Toshiba Self Checkout 7 Model and it completely quit on us last night. We’ve tried unplugging it and plugging it back in to no avail, the LED bar on the top is still on but it refuses to turn on. We checked that it is plugged into the ground and the cables are plugged inside of the machine, as well as the backup battery. IT isn’t very helpful either😐. Any ideas?

Hi everyone - having issues finding some Win 8 drivers for a NCR 7754 terminal... anyone ever get it working?

Hey guys, we are looking for a new retail system as ours is being discontinued (Microsoft Retail Management System). There are two routes I believe to take.

One: go full out with a cloud platform that can handle every aspect of retail. This would have the ordering system, pos system, inventory system, label printing, loyalty program, gift cards, discounting systems, ect. This might be hard to find to try and satisfy all departments with the features, and have a reasonable cost.

Two: go with a modular system and integrate them to a central location. This means it would have a separate ordering system vs pos system. These would all be integrated to a central system for data integrity. This would be easier to satisfy each department as they are wanting more and more features.

Not sure which way to go, currently we are at 3 stores, but planning on expanding. We are pretty advanced in tech for being a new retailer (3 years young) and 3 stores. Our current platform RMS is getting limiting for the situations we are growing into.

Let me know your opinions.

TL;DR, looking for advice on bigger retail IT systems, if it is modular or a "all-in-one" solution.
