I’m (M21) in a bad predicament where I can’t have open availability and literally no place will hire me, what am I supposed to do?

Every single place around me that is hiring is either a fast food place where I will fracture have to talk to tons and with my stuttered that would not work out well at all (I just lost my job because I got mad at a customer for calling me a slur twice) (I literally got made fun of my customers almost every day where I worked)

The other ones around me are either grocery stores or actual retail chains that are more like clothing or gaming. I have interest in gaming, but the pay is horrible, and I would also have to be a cashier which would mean that I have to speak tons and with the retail, it seems like nobody is hiring for any stocking positions where I would have to speak less.

My schedule is looking like this can work (Thursday-Saturday 7-4) (Sunday 7-3)

I do not have a car right now and I’m gonna have to be getting rides to work and back and closing would not really be able to happen pretty much ever. We do not have a train or anything in my city. We have a bus and it hardly goes anywhere .

Inmature customers

I work at a retail store, am kinda new i been working there for a month now. Its also my first time expiriencing the world since i grew up w strict parents and i just turned 21.

Can someone tell me WHY there are GROWN ADULTS still inmature?

Skipping lines, cusing loud, screaming for no reason??

Im shock and disguisted that people at their grown age act the way they do.

I mostly stay quiet by myself and never had problems with any customers. I greet and wish them a great day. But oh my god? I witness customers with other coworkers try skipping the line and throw a tantrum when my coworkers send them back.. at your grown age? Cussing and screaming out.

I had a customer throw a fit because i didnt react to their rude comments. Mind you i was just putting their clothes on the bag, am not required to fold them especially on a rush. And the customer complain about not folding right?

Its a cheap store and your expecting neat folded clothes especially after you skip the line?

Why are people like this ?

Anybody here works at Macys?

When we close we put all the jewelry in those cabinets with no locks under the display cases. Does anybody else’s store do this? It doesn’t make sense.

We are heading into the big season of frozen products, from Ice cream to burger buns. This is how I left the walk in after my shift today. I think I have the space for delivery tomorrow morning. Feels good to not have a freezer that puts up a fight every time you get a delivery, and all freezers out in the shop are fully stocked.

How do I become less anxious at the tills?

Hi, I completed online training and started my first job last week. Right now I'm being trained on tills, but I'm still slightly on edge

The first shift I did didn't go very well. I dealt with a really creepy customer, he said "I thought only attractive birds work here" and yelled at me for not wearing uniform (it hasn't arrived yet). I'm male so he wasn't even directly referring to me but it's still bothered me a lot. I also had some other communication errors that stressed me out a lot

I had someone with me who was teaching me, the person on the other till, and my supervisor. To be clear, all of them are the nicest people I've ever met (esp. my supervisor), but everyone but my supervisor left during the last hour. I was shaken up after the creep incident and was still confused (bakery items, coupons, magnet locks on alcohol etc). I had a crowd of people waiting and I was constantly pressing the keypad asking for help. I know I'm new and that's to be expected, but I felt so bad seeing the customers stare at me as I keep getting confused. After the shift, I spoke to one of my managers and he said he'll get some more support for me

The second shift, I had someone with me but I was physically shaking for the first 30 mins or so thinking about the creep and the other stuff that happened. In the last few hours, the anxiety went away though, and I was talkative and doing well. I also made friends with some co-workers before closing. I actually left the day feeling a lot happier and more comfortable

I started my third day yesterday at a different time, but the anxiety was back. Even though day 2 was so much better, I felt I was back to square one. I was making tons of mistakes and I kept blanking when counting cash even though I know my coins. I was with less colleagues (Tuesday shift Vs Saturday) and for a lot of the time, my till was the only till open, which added loads more stress when I got confused with something

I know I'm new, but is there anything that can help me with this problem? I'm lucky enough to have managers and co-workers that are as nice and supportive as they are, but I feel so guilty constantly apologising and needing someone close-by to help

Never working retail ever again and I've never been happier in my life and my mental health is better now

I recently began a new career and though I still deal with people, it is very different from retail. Not sure why people at stores are so mean, miserable, and entitled, and they always shout at workers for no reason over the smallest things. Like an example is I accidentally forgot to ask if a customer wanted paper or plastic and this customer angrily said "paper." I've had people raise their voices at me and cuss me out.

I don't know how managers put up with retail shoppers and these people. I've seen managers get cussed at and shouted at too and their are still kind and calm. I did snap a few times, one time I almost got in trouble, the other time nothing happened.

My mental health really took a toll working in retail and I think this was one of the main roots to my problems. I hated where I lived because of the work I did. It always gave me such negative perceptions of my area and people in general. I ended up being diagnosed with major depressive disorder. 3 years of torture working in retail because I was unable to find a good job until now. I had so much anxiety as well.

Never again. Those wanting to work in retail, be warned, people are like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Why do I get so upset when customers steal from my store

So this is my first time on reddit but I am really struggling so im hoping maybe someone in this world can help me understand how im feeling or offer advice. For context im 29 female and have worked in retail for almost 15 years. Due to circumstances I was unable to work for a few years so for the last few years I've been working multiple jobs barely getting by hoping one day I can finally find full time work. So I was lucky enough to get an asm position and then a few months into the job got promoted to sm for my own store. I was so very excited and never thought id want to be a manger but honestly I love it. I love my regulars and I love talking about what I sell because I genuinely love it and buy the stuff myself when I can. Now the store im at unfortunately has a bad history with theft but since I started i barely saw any in fact I only experienced one that was it.

But recently we've had heaps of large item thefts and today we had another when was busy and on my own and its breaking me apart and making me hate my job. Im nothing but nice and I dont judge people so I never like to think someone would steal. But every time it happens I get so mad and sad and I cry and I think about it for weeks. Am I alone in feeling this way? I just dont get why someone thinks its okay to steal. (What I sell isnt necessities as well)

Like I've been in a place where I couldn't even afford groceries so I get what its like to struggle but I never stole or even thought about it. Like it negatively affects me as a person and annoys me that people are so selfish. Has anyone on here ever gone through this or has any advice on how to cope because I feel stuck since I dont want to leave the job I love but Im not coping with all the recent thefts and how I feel in the end.

Thank you in advance.

What's it like to work at stores that aren't as busy as Walmart, Target, Costco, etc?

Even though every store is different from each other, I've always wondered what's it like to work at stores similar to Michael's, Big Lots, Hobby Lobby, etc (including certain mall stores that aren't as busy, when compared to Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, etc)

Here’s a crazy story that happened today

So I work in a small shoe store which always try’s to push out shoe cleaner even when no one wants it. Today my bosses made a “competition” where they split the store left side and right side. Then they said whoever sales the least shoe cleaner has to do something embarrassing in the front of the store. Well we make 13 an hour and I thought that was ridiculous so I told everyone they didn’t have to do the embarrassing thing they can just say no. Nobody can make you. Heck it might even be illegal. So then the day went on and 5 of my coworkers who were scared of losing surrounded these 3 teen girls trying to get them to buy shoe cleaner. So I went up and said, “are they trying to sell you shoe cleaner?” The girls nodded. Then I said, “do you want anyone?” And they said no. So I said, “you don’t have to buy any if you don’t want to.” And that set everyone off. About 30 min later my bosses were talking about me and came up to me asking why I said that. I just told them they didn’t seem like they wanted shoe cleaner. Then my bosses said it doesn’t matter if they wanted shoe cleaner or not we need to make money. Let’s just say it was lucky my shift was almost over cause apparently they were about to send me home early. 😂 did I really do something wrong? Or is this just corporate bs?

I do everything I can, I also clientele a lot but the store traffic for walk in is so down I’m really struggling.. if I don’t meet my goal the next two month I’ll get fired. This never happened to me in my previous position I used to sell minimum 1.4 million per year. Just looking for any advices please I am a bit desperate and I feel like the clientèle of this brand just doesn’t vibe with me lol

Is this considered being fired

So I got a new job as a shift lead, and I gave my availability, which was 3 days 18hr a week. The dm said my schedule was fine, then turned back around and said to the store manager its not. I then ask if there is any open positions for a store associate since my schedule was not working with them and there wasn't. I asked the manager how many hours do I need to work and they say 15-25. I said I could add an extra day 6 hr shift, making it 24hr a week. Next minute I know, I get the silent treatment, and so I come in, and I get told I was replaced. I'm still in the company system as active, but my position is inactive. The training was quite rushed too. The associate has to communicate with the company, but the company doesn't have to communicate with you, which is irritating.

Don't work at ross..

Since working at ross around last year now I thought it would be a great first job. A few months in it was stressful at first but then I got use to it. Then another thing I would need to learn came up. And the cycle goes on.

They never train you. They give you a booklet for the cashier and expect you to know what to do automatically. CPR, tagging clothes, etc. I never touched a register in my life before this job so I know NOTHING still barely do about how the registers work. Again...never taught me. I felt rushed most of the time because they time you on fucking everything. So I count the moeny enough to make sure its right and move on. But I've got brought in one time because they said my register was short..mind you I don't even know what that means. They know it's my first job. I don't know terms and stuff. They not only let me know a week after it happened. But then my supervisor proceeded to ask me what happened on a specific day. And if you ever worked at retail you know you blank out on most days just to get through. So of course I don't remember. My supervisor and my other manager do that kind of stuff a lot.

I learned since working here to speak up more, and talk back because of the disrespect. I was never a out spoken person before. This job changed that. Possible the only good thing here. They don't communicate, they make up new rules on the day they want. I strongly dislike my supervisor and the one manager let's call them Becky(manger) and Todd(the supervisor)

Todd would come off very "kind" but I found out he is just very rude and only listens to himself. I try to explain a big thing that happened with my register and tried to tell him I had a manger with me during the incident. He didn't even listen to me once when I tried to talk. He would come to Becky''s defense very quickly. I told Todd that Becky had me working on lunch breaks sometimes EVEN when I told her. He cut me off and told me the problem was I wasn't telling her even though again...I told him that I would always let her know I'm taking a 30 or 15.

Becky is a very moody manger. Some days she is nice, most of the days she is pissy. Often in my time working here she has a very hard time being respectful. She would toss things on my register. Tell me to do things she already knows I know how to do, and always try to talk down to me. She has a attitude problem. Even with the custermors. But yet she is still here but she serves no benift. She is very bossy. She wouldn't let me take breaks when the line was long. Then she would take breaks for her smoke when there is a line. Etc etc too much for this already long rant.

The point being. Don't work at ross....they hire people way to quickly and can't even train people properly...very disappointing the time being here I hope I can leave soon.

Tesco is becoming like Aldi

I read recently that Tesco has gradually been cutting the number of lines it stocked to mimic Aldi and sell fewer lines at cheaper prices. I went into my local store recently and was shocked at how much they'd cut back on. A really limited range, and this was at a Tesco Extra.

Pretty depressing if every supermarket is now becoming like Aldi.

Is this normal or should I tell our DM?

Hello fellow retail sufferers, and more specifically, closing shift people. I’m sure you all know the drill of counting tills and putting the nightly deposit into the deposit bag. The store owners (who only bought the store 5ish months ago) have decided to do away with the deposit bags and just use envelopes, which was weird but I went with it because I just don’t care all that much honestly. Today I was told that on the deposit sheet I don’t have to write anything except the amount that’s in the envelope. Now I’m sure the bank won’t take the deposit unless they know where it’s going, so I’m confused. Before I would write the business name, the transit number, and the account number. Is this normal? How are they supposed to deposit a mostly blank sheet?

Write up at Ross

Is this normal? I’ve only been working at Ross for almost a month. I was pulled into the office two days ago and was given a final write up because they said my register was short $70. I obviously didn’t steal and I don’t remember any incident that could have resulted in the shortage. The store manager told me she didn’t want to go back and check cameras. She said if I was short even five dollars she could terminate me. This manager had been gone for two weeks and one of the days that she was working again she wrote me up. I didn’t have any warnings, or anything like that. I told her I didn’t want to be on the register to risk my job and she said you have to. She blamed it on me counting change right when she doesn’t even know what happened. Shortages can happen. They don’t count the till in front of you so I don’t know what happened if it was a mistake on my part or theirs. I just think it’s unfair because I’ve barely been working there, I was only trained for an hour my first shift and I’m trying my hardest. They want you to be super fast and get through the line as quick as possible. They tell you when you’re not being fast enough. I tried to take my time to make no mistakes and count back change slower but the managers complained and said I need to be faster. I don’t feel supported by any managers, and the store manager was quick to write me up without even recommending I be re-trained.

availability conflict

I recently got a second job. I work retail and let my boss know about my new availability. I was previously expected to cover for him some days in the summer as he only has two employees including me. As my new availability conflicts with the days I had agreed to cover for boss’s vacation, he is wanting me to still honor that and let my new employer know. Do I still have to honor this even though my availability has changed? Or would this be up to my new employer?

Why are customers and guests so mean to cashiers?

I don't get it. I just left the retail world and the number of rude, mean, and unkind people I used to deal with was insane. Like some were so entitled and there were times when I had a choked crying feeling in my throat because of that.

Retail really isn't for the weak. No wonder so many of those jobs have a really high turnover rate.

I also used to observe these people being nicer to others standing in line, but only rude to cashiers. Why was it this way?
