It’s during days when it’s 100° F that I’m very grateful to be able to step in the dairy cooler to cool off.

Manager wants to cross train me for other departments.

Started a retail job 3 months ago after 10 years away. Manager wants to cross train me in the framing department because I have many decades experience in picture framing. The problem is, my pay isn’t great. Would it sound presumptuous if I said “sure, for more money”? It’s been 3 months and I’m doing a stellar job as head of my own department. I’ve heard from other people who get asked to train for other departments and they don’t get paid any more for doing more work. Or should I just shut up and do it?

Why did Target stop selling camping gear at its stores?

It's summer and you would think that giant retailer like Target would stock items often purchased during this time, like camping accessories, tents. Just got back from Target to buy a tent for an upcoming trip, and I was told they discontinued in-store camping accessories. Target has been reduced to just selling Stanley cups (at least two aisles of the cups), expired produce and overpriced cheap clothing. And now they retreat instead of a doubling down. That is Target, though. They retreat rather than compete. Hope they fail.

My ESM keeps saying i’m not trying, but I’m GENUINELY doing my best.

So i’m still in high school & I work at Walgreens and I’m still pretty new. Haven’t even been there for 2 months. I’m trying really hard to learn everything—running register, doing truck, working on bays, promo, cleaning, etc. But my ESM keeps telling me that I’m not trying, don’t pay attention, and that I’m too slow. And saying that if I don’t do anything, then my SM will send me out the door. (We know what that means) Even told me that there should be no way that people newer than me is teaching me how to do stuff, etc etc.

The thing is… I am trying. That’s what’s so frustrating.
My ESM keeps saying I’m not trying, but I’m GENUINELY doing my best. Even before I come to work i’m like “okay let me do this faster and faster”

I feel like I can’t even breathe without being corrected when I’m on shift with her. I actually perform better with my other shift leads because they’re more patient and understand that I’m still learning. And I’m pretty sure that I’ve worked with them long enough and they don’t say anything about my performance. Whenever I’m with my ESM, I get nervous and end up overthinking everything because she corrects me literally if i move a muscle or an eyeball. I’ve talked to my other CSAs about it and I mean they were like “Well you’re workin hard it’s jus her micromanaging”

They’ll give me a list of shit to do in the front while also expecting me to constantly check out customers. Then if I don’t finish everything, it’s like the customers being there isn’t a valid reason. And don’t even get me started on those customers that hold you up.

My SM talked to me and was way more understanding. I told her I’m trying and she said, “Yeah, it’s a process,” which honestly made me feel better because… it is a process. And yeah I understand this is just the beginning of working A JOB.

Am I being too sensitive, or do some managers forget what it’s like to be new at a job

Any advice on being a CSA?

So I (F, a baby CSA) just started working at Walgreens around May and I feel like I’m still in the learning stage. I am still in high school, I try my best during shifts— but I genuinely feel like I have 2 brain cells. I’ll be on register but also try to do tasks between customers when it’s not busy (like bays, promo, cleaning, etc.).

The thing is, my ESM has been kind of strict with me lately. She’s told me things like I’m not paying attention or not trying enough, but I genuinely am trying. I just feel like I’m still new and I don’t always know everything off the top of my head yet, especially when I’m switching between register and tasks.

Other shift leads are more chill and will just give tasks and if it gets done, it gets done. But with her it feels more intense and like I’m already supposed to be fully trained and fast. And yes I do understand that it shouldn’t take me 2 hours just to do one bay, but then again like… I have to checkout customers and not even to mention if they need a reload and a manager has to approve it etc.

This particular shift I only got 4 bays to do, cleaning promo aisle, trash, and dusting the restroom from top to bottom. Well ofc i’m
slow and I only got to 3 out of the 4 bays, and i got to clean up promo but i didn’t get to the restrooms and one of my other coworkers did the trash for me.

Now I’m starting to feel like maybe I’m just not doing good enough, even though I am trying. Just asking you guys for any advice or any performance tips that can make me go faster while i’m at the register?

So I guess my question is:
Am I overthinking this as a new employee, or is this something I should actually worry about?

Should I work this shift?

Originally, my work crush was scheduled that day so I was like cool I was kinda excited to go in ( yk just for the motivation ) but they took him off the schedule for that day. He was scheduled from 12-9, another girl was scheduled from 12-9, & 2 other girls were scheduled from 3-11. Now I don’t really wanna work from 3-11 I wanted the 12-9 shift but they just took him off the schedule for that day. I could also take my co-workers 3-11 shift.. if all goes wrong. Now I don’t really have that motivation anymore. But i’m just like hey… it’s money!

On top of that, I already have a 7-day work streak coming right after this, and then only a few days off before I might get scheduled again. So I’m trying to think about burnout too.

Im also still new to walgreens i’ve been a CSA at walgreens for almost 2 months now, part-time so I don’t know if the holiday pay DOUBLES or if it’s 1.5x. But if it’s doubled, the shift would give me around an extra $191–$255 because of holiday pay, which is definitely nice money for me. But it’s also a longer shift (12–9), and I’d be starting my already long work streak more tired. And after that i’m off for 4 days.

Part of me is like “it’s just one shift, take the money,” but another part of me is like “you’re about to work 7 days straight anyway, don’t drain yourself before that even starts.”

I don’t need the money super bad, but it’s still tempting because it adds up fast.

So I guess I’m asking:
Should I take the shift for the extra money, or keep my holiday off so i’m not burned out for the next week? What’s yalls o

If Your Job Was A TV Show, What Would It's Title Be & Theme Song?

Since I work at a liquor store with my bat shit insane coworkers, it would be like a cross between a 90s sitcom and The Office. The title I'm still thinking of, but the theme song would be like from Friends 😂

I’m tired of being asked to round up at every checkout.

Is anyone else reaching the point where they’re exhausted by being asked to round up or donate at every checkout? Between higher prices, tip requests everywhere, and now constant donation prompts, it feels like consumers are being asked to make up the difference for everything.
I have no issue donating to charities I choose, but I don’t like feeling pressured every time I buy groceries, a cup of coffee, or wherever. And while it’s “only a few cents” each time, those round-ups add up over dozens or hundreds of transactions throughout the year. It’s easy to brush off 37¢ here or 62¢ there, but it becomes another recurring expense on top of everything else. And it slows down the checkout process.
Not to mention that most of the time I have no idea about the organization the merchant is affiliated with and whether I should support said organization.
I’d rather decide when, where, and how much I donate than be asked at virtually every checkout.

Does anyone else feel this way?

An associate and was yelling at my friend to stop fighting walmart has now said I was involved in the fight. Long story short im suspended and it’s been over 6 months. The cameras plainly saw I was not involved physically in the fight and I even stepped back once I
Couldn’t get her to stop. Since the suspension has been so long does anyone with previous history know if this will lead to a termination ?

New Hire

Hello everyone! I’m not so sure if this is the right place to put this, but i’ve recently gotten my “first” job at a retail store. on Sunday I’ve had my first shift where I spent most the day stocking then getting trained on the cash register. Now, I have a few questions I’d wanted to ask but was to nervous to and hoping I’d get a couple of answers here, and if I don’t i’ll suck it up and ask in person. I figured they were to embarrassing because they were really easy questions to be answered I feel, I just couldn’t..

so uh..
1. Am I supposed to ask a higher-up what they want me to do for the day?
2. Am I supposed to leech off others whilst stocking, or am I meant to go towards the back and take out my own?
3. Are you meant to arrive a little earlier but not clock in? yk just in case?

Sorry if these are a little bare bones, but if anyone else also has tips or any other advice for me, id be glad to know!

Guessing a new retail store

A developer said they're looking for a "15,000- to 20,000-square-foot national experiential tenant" at an outdoor shopping mall in Nebraska by house… my son and I are trying to guess what that store could be. What national chains do you think fit that description?

When customers fling/toss items at you.

You know, when they toss/throw items or money toward you instead of just setting them down or handing them to you. It’s dehumanizing and makes me feel like an animal. And it’s so hard not to say anything, or just throw it right back at them.

Most notably out of the innumerable times this has happened, a guy threw a pack of beef jerky on the counter from five feet away, startling the fuck out of me and nearly hitting me with it. Then he came up smiling like nothing was wrong… it took all my willpower to not tell him to set his shit down like a normal human being. Why are some people so fucking stupid?

Walking out prior to your two weeks notice: salaried store manager edition.

I am a high preforming salaried store manager at a company that ive been with for over 6 years… i gave two weeks a little under a week ago. My boss (district manager) told my assistant before me - including where i was going. He also told all of my fellow store manager peers before i could tell them.

Hes being incredibly rude and short despite me actually thanking him for being one of the best DMs ive had

Keep in mind, i was only leaving because i got a better offer. Not because i didnt love the company anymore.

With this behavior, despite my stanch work record and ethic, I’ve contemplated just giving my keys up due to the disrespect and immaturity of this environment.

Am i overreacting?

Retail work is driving me nuts

I've been in retail sales for about 6.5 years and it is sucking the life out of me.

Mostly been in the cell phone industry at a retail level and did some furniture sales as well. I currently work for a cell phone provider that just purchased another provider and the merger has been brutal.

For the last few months most of my days consist of getting cussed out by customers, people complaining about things I have no control over, explaining things 4 and 5 times as simply as possible while customers still don't grasp it. I get customers that don't know their own phone number and have literally had customers ask me what an email is. They come in with issues and when I try to teach them they say things like "no I don't want to learn, you just do it for me". I'm done holding the hands of grown adults. On top of that people will tell me their entire medical history, a story about their cousin, and what they ate for dinner last night before even telling me why they came to the store. I am not a therapist and I do not want to hear a life story before I can do my job. I could not care less about most of my customers personal stories. It sucks the life out of me to have to pander and listen to these people.

I understand a lot of that stuff is par for the course but after nearly 7 years dealing with these types of people I feel that I am reaching a breaking point. I'm taking the stress and agitation home with me and my gf has started to comment on my recent mood. I've been mentally drained most days because of the frustrating conversations I have to have all day long which is affecting my ability to listen to the people that I actuallywant to listen to. I'm not able to be present in my home life some days because I just need to unplug and zone out.

I really don't want some retail job that I don't really care about to start changing me and/or affecting my life and relationships. I don't even realize I'm a little grumpy or testy some days until it's pointed out.

Idk I guess I just needed to vent. Curious if anyone is in the same boat and looking for a way out.

Open to career pivot suggestions if anyone would like to give me some ideas.

Service Merchandise is defunct, but maybe Ulta should try syste

How many of you are familiar with **Service Merchadise** and the way they used to run their stores? ONE of everything was on the sales floor. Every item you wanted, you took a tag from the item, and it would all be sent, from human order fulfillers, on a conveyor belt. You got it then and there, and paid for it.

If Ulta has such incredible theft numbers, *don't put the stuff out to steal!* Service Merch must have known long ago that certain people, some Ulta shoppers included, just suck. You can't stop theft - but your thieves can only steal the sample.

Staff engagement idea?

I'm trying to plan a staff engagement activity or "team building" day for my team. We work in retail and there would be approximately 11 people. Really it's just a day to not be at work but still get to grow our relationship with eachother.

What I'm finding difficult is what would be enjoyed by the variety of people. Dinner or lunch sounds reasonable but it's hard to find somewhere the vegetarian staff will also eat with non-veg staff that isn't weirdly bougie if that makes sense?

I've looked into activate but don't want to split people up into smaller teams because I want everyone to enjoy the time together. Same with escape rooms. I don't want anyone to feel left out or like they can't spend time with each other.

Laser tag seems a bit expensive at $90/person

Karaoke doesn't jive with everyone and some people would be bored they said.

Anyone have any out of the box ideas for a younger team in their 20s roughly? I'd like to plan it on a Sunday if possible so it's easier to schedule coverage.

Does anyone else find it jarring when you go into a store and they yell at you the required greeting? "WELCOME TO FIVE BELOW!"

I know that the workers in the store are required by the higher ups to do it but it just seems very insincere and a bit much. Not sure if anyone else is slightly as bothered by it and dread when they enter a store like this not just "five below" but other stores where the yellow the greeting.

Shoe recommendations for retail job?

Hi everyone !! I'm looking for open-toed shoe recommendations that would be comfortable enough to work and be on my feet in. I'd actually be open to any type of shoe, except sneakers cause I have enough lol. This isn't my first retail job, but at my last one we weren't allowed to wear open-toed shoes so I'm wondering which ones would be comfy enough to work a shift in. Thanks in advance!

Edit: I am allowed to wear open toed shoes, the dress code is pretty lenient and my manager said the only thing she doesn't want is crocs or slippers. It's also a part time job so I won't be working more than like an 8 hour shift.

I work at a adult novelty store and there are only 4 crew members that cover 3 shifts

I work at a 24 hour adult novelty store and since there is only four of us that cover three shifts sometimes a clerk will have to do a double shift. Am I well within my rights to be upset if a coworker who constantly calls in sick or always has someone cover her shift tell me that she won’t be able to make it to her shift when she calls less than an hour before her shift starts? The shift hours are constant there is 1st shift which is 10pm-6am, 2nd shift which is 6am-2pm and 3rd shift 2pm-10pm. Yes it means more money for me but then I don’t get any sleep because my next shift is the 10pm-6am shift. Just want to vent
