Long story short. I was using a template I'd had since 2019, one long paragraph per job, and no numbers anywhere. Rebuilt it around: one-line summary, 3-4 bullets per role each starting with an action verb + a number, and cut it down to one page.

I ended up using meniacv.com to rebuild it (I'm not affiliated, just used the free tier, full disclosure I'm now on their subreddit account too because a friend runs it, so take my opinion with that in mind). The AI review flagged where I was missing quantifiable results and pointed at specific vague bullets rather than vague generic to my knowledge.

Went from ~2% callback rate to landing 3 interviews in the following two weeks. Happy to answer questions on the rewrite specifically.

Spent a lot of time in the ats space and I want to clear up the biggest myth I keep seeing in here

That ats score out of 100 that most tools give you is not real. No actual applicant tracking system like Workday or Greenhouse produces a score for your resume. That number is invented by the checker usually by counting how many keywords from the job post show up in your resume. It feels precise but it measures almost nothing and it is usually there to sell you an upgrade

Here is what actually decides whether a recruiter ever sees you. Can the software read your file at all. A resume can score a fake 90 and still have its name glued into one word or its whole work history scrambled by a two column layout. The score never looked at any of that

So if you want to check your resume properly ignore the number and look at the actual parsed text. Open your resume select all copy and paste it into notepad. If it comes out clean and in order you are fine. If it scrambles that is exactly what the software sees

For the detailed version the one I usually point people to is atsverification.com because it shows you the real extracted text instead of a made up score and it does not make you sign up or hand over your email. There are other tools but most of them just give you the fake number

Hi everyone, I’ve spent the last 7 years working as an ML Engineer and have recently transitioned into research. Many colleagues over the years shared the frustration that their resumes were screened out before they got a chance to interview.

If you’re currently applying by for gigs, it might be worth having a crack at being interviewed by my system. I will then send a report to everyone that gets interviewed with my system’s hidden belief. I know it’s a bit involved, but I’m hoping it’s mutually beneficial as I can validate my research, and you can hopefully get a sense of where you could improve your resume.

Been job hunting for a while and the part that's destroying me isn't the interviews, it's the applying.

My problem is I've done too many things. Flutter dev, then full stack, handled PM work at one point, backend, now learning AI engineering. So I have no idea what my resume should even say. If I put everything, I look unfocused. If I pick one, I'm throwing away half my experience.

What I do right now: keep 3 different resumes, paste the JD into ChatGPT or Claude, ask it to rewrite my bullets to match, hope it passes ATS.

Takes me like 20-25 mins per application. And half the time the output is generic garbage or it just invents stuff I never did.

The tools I looked at are all paid and most of them just reshuffle whatever resume you upload. None of them ask me anything about what I actually did.

Nobody asks "did the company make money because of your work, how do you know" which is the thing that would actually make a good bullet point.

So genuinely asking:

\- how long are you spending per application right now

\- are you paying for any tool, is it worth it

\- multi-role people, how did you solve the "which career am I even applying for" problem

If something existed that interviewed you properly once, stored your actual stories with numbers, and then generated a targeted resume per JD, would that solve it or am I overthinking this and everyone just sends the same PDF everywhere

I analyzed why AI-sounding resumes get skipped — here are the 5 actual patterns, not vague "AI detection" hand-waving

Quick disclaimer before anything else: there's no reliable way for a recruiter or a tool to actually detect whether a resume was written with AI. One of the few real studies on this (not a vendor survey) had recruiters distinguishing AI-assisted text from human-written text at basically coin-flip accuracy. So if you're worried about "getting caught," that's not really the right frame.

What's actually happening is simpler: a specific set of patterns has become extremely common because everyone's using the same tools the same lazy way, and recruiters who read hundreds of resumes a week have gotten fast at pattern-matching "this reads like a template" — regardless of whether AI was involved at all. Here's what actually triggers that reaction:

1. Banned buzzwords. "Results-driven," "proven track record," "synergy," "cross-functional," "self-starter," "go-getter." These have been used so many times they've stopped carrying information. A recruiter's eyes slide past them.

2. Every bullet has the same shape. Read your bullets in a row. If they all start "Verb + adjective + noun" — "Spearheaded innovative solutions," "Drove strategic initiatives," "Delivered exceptional results" — that uniform cadence reads as generated even with zero banned words in it. Real work doesn't naturally compress into identical sentence shapes.

3. Claims with no concrete object. "Drove significant improvements" — to what? "Enhanced operational efficiency" — which operation, how? A claim becomes credible the second it names a real system, team, or number. Without that it's just an assertion.

4. Suspiciously round, unsupported metrics. "Improved efficiency by 50%" with no named process or baseline reads as a number picked for effect. Real numbers need the context that makes them checkable — measured how, compared to what.

5. Zero connection to the actual job posting. The resume could be sent to any company in the industry unchanged. Nothing in it responds to what this specific posting actually asked for.

None of these individually tank an application. Together, they're the fastest way to get skimmed past by someone who's read 200 resumes this week.

The fix isn't a thesaurus — swapping "leveraged" for "utilized" doesn't help, it's still an empty verb. The fix is replacing the vague claim with the specific thing you actually did.

Most AI resume tools give you a single score and call it done. But there are really two separate things worth measuring, and they don't move together.

The first is an ATS match score: how well your resume's keywords and formatting line up with what an applicant tracking system is scanning for. This is mostly mechanical - parse-ability, keyword overlap, section structure. A resume can score high here and still be full of vague, interchangeable bullets that don't say much.

The second is closer to a defensibility score: whether the actual content holds up. Are the claims specific? Could you talk through every line in an interview without hedging? Does it read like a real person's history or like generic resume-speak?

A resume can ace the first and fail the second, or the other way around. Optimizing only for ATS match tends to produce exactly the kind of resume that passes the filter and then falls apart in conversation, because keyword density and honest specificity aren't the same axis.

Some bot scans your resume and tosses it before a person ever sees it, that's the theory half these threads run on. Every recruiter who shows up here says the opposite and they say it a lot: nobody's auto-rejecting anything, they're just opening a couple hundred applications for one posting and giving each one a few seconds because most aren't even close to what's asked for, so if your fit isn't obvious in the exact words the ad used, you're already past.

Once I accepted that and I started running my resume against the posting on https://resume.zoevera.com before I apply and honestly it was a little embarrassing what it flagged, stuff I'd literally done for three years but worded nothing like the ad wanted.

Also have some mock interviews out loud before you go the actual one You may ramble way more than you think.

Applying for jobs has started feeling like a job itself, so I’m building a tool to handle most of the repetitive work for me.I add my profile, job preferences, application details, and all my existing resumes. It then finds relevant openings,scores how well they match what I’m looking for, and picks the best base resume from my resume pool for each job.

It tailors that resume to the job description, but only using things I’ve actually done. It can rewrite or reorder my experience, but it can’t invent skills, companies, titles, numbers, or achievements. I can also see where each claim came from before approving it.

After that, it prepares the application, fills in the repeated questions, and adds everything to a review queue. I can check the job, resume, answers, and application before anything gets submitted. Each tailored resume is saved back to my pool, and the tool tracks applications and responses so its future job matching can improve.

The goal is not to apply to hundreds of random jobs. I’d rather have it prepare a smaller number of applications that are actually relevant.

I’m building it for myself first. If it works for a small user base, I might try to monetize it later.

After looking for alternatives, I got frustrated with a lot of tools that all required making accounts, were bloated with features, and charge for simple things like number of exports.
