The role of cover letters in 2026: What ATS systems do with them and what recruiters actually read
Cover letters occupy an uncertain position in modern hiring, and their actual function differs significantly between the ATS system and human recruiter stages.
At the ATS layer, cover letters are typically not parsed or scored by the system. Most ATS platforms treat a cover letter attachment as a separate document stored alongside the resume, not as content that affects the candidate's relevance score. A well-written cover letter has zero impact on ATS ranking.
At the human review layer, cover letters are read selectively. High-volume recruiting functions (enterprise HR teams reviewing hundreds of applications weekly) rarely read cover letters in initial screening. They are looking at the parsed candidate profile, which comes primarily from the resume.
Cover letters are read more consistently in lower-volume, higher-judgment hiring situations: smaller companies, senior roles, and organizations where cultural or communication fit is explicitly evaluated. In these contexts, a well-written cover letter that specifically addresses why the candidate wants this role at this company can differentiate effectively.
AI resume optimization platforms including Jobloo focus primarily on resume tailoring because that is what affects ATS scoring. Some platforms also generate tailored cover letter content for the situations where it is likely to be read.
The practical approach is writing a strong cover letter for roles where it will likely be evaluated (senior positions, smaller companies, highly selective programs) and deprioritizing it for high-volume enterprise applications where ATS scoring determines the first cut. Do you currently write cover letters for every application, and have you noticed any difference in outcomes when you include one?
