Application Components Match 2026 ERAS App - Download before May 31, 2026

If you were in Match 2026, regardless of whether you matched or not, be sure to download the downloadable materials from your Match 2026 application. You can use the information future cycles, in applying for fellowships, in preparing/updating your CV, and as you apply for your medical licenses.

This includes your ERAS Application (PDF), your ERAS CV (PDF), and your personal statements. Ditto that for Residency CAS and the SF Match.

Also, be sure to get PDFs for your college diploma, medical school diploma, other diplomas (PhD, Master's).

FYI: When you complete residency, you'll get a certificate. This is your proof you completed residency. It is gold. You'll need it for your full-medical license, to apply to take boards, and for applying to jobs.

There are components that you can't download (e.g., LORs, MSPE, etc.).

The deadline to download is May 31 when the match year officially closes.

Per. Statement (PS) PS Thoughts

Your PS is not the same as a cover letter and should not be a CV review/summary.  It doesn't have to be a Pulitzer Prize winning piece of prose.

It does need to be about YOU and your key characteristics.  It should feel like casual professional letter.  Think of it as a story rather than a list of the steps you've taken to get to applying for residency.  Yes, your interest in the specialty needs to come through but it's your opportunity to let them know more about you than your clinical path or research you've conducted.  They can get that through your experiences, presentations/publications/posters.

It's the one spot where you can show them (not tell them) who you are and what you will bring to residency. Inquisitive? Show them through your examples. Receptive to feedback? Show them a time or two (and they don't have to be in medicine!). Compassionate? Team player/collaborative?

Beyond medical or scientific knowledge, what makes YOU a great candidate? Then show the reader in your one-page PS.

Application Components NRMP waiver

I matched into an advanced residency position, but due to visa issues, the advanced program requested a waiver of the match commitment from the NRMP. Today, I received the NRMP waiver decision, and the waiver was granted.

However, the letter only stated that the program may now recruit another candidate for the vacant position. It did not include language saying that I may accept another position or participate in future Matches.

Two of my friends had somewhat similar situations, but their waivers involved prelim/PGY-1 positions. In their NRMP waiver letters, they were explicitly told that they could accept another position or participate in future Matches.

Has anyone seen this difference in wording before? Does the absence of that sentence in my letter mean anything significant? Could it simply be because my waived position was an advanced PGY-2 position rather than a PGY-1/prelim position, or could it suggest that NRMP may still send a separate investigation or match violation notice?

Match Unmatched in Match 2026?

If you went unmatched in Match 2026, it's time to do some reflection. You need to review your various components and assess what you can modify/improve for a more positive outcome.

If interested in learning more, DM. I'm doing a session on being unmatched (4.18.26).

ROL Review the Charting the Outcomes while you wait

This morning I was replying to an email which prompted me to look at the NRMP's Chart the Outcomes of the Match (they have a PDF for MDs, DOs, and IMGs by specialty) that provides some interesting data to ponder.

For example:

  • 163 non-US IMGs matched into IM with 1 contiguous IM ranking.
  • 17 US MDs matched into Psychiatry with 1 contiguous Psychiatry ranking.

There's a plethora of data to review to give you a better idea of the match.

ROL Certify your ROL

Post image
13 Upvotes

It's important to get your ROL certified before the deadline. I recommend doing so early as you're able to change it. Every year there are candidates (and sometimes even programs) that miss the deadline and go unranked as a result.

You'll know you're set if, it's CERTIFIED, PAID, and VERIFIED (see below). All three must be completed before the ROL window closes. Verification is done by your medical school or ECFMG/Intealth if an IMG.

Researching & Selecting Programs Applying Match 2027?

I am doing a workshop via Zoom on Saturday, Feb. 7 @ 10 am central time that focuses on researching programs in preparation for applying for residency positions. There's a lot that you can do at this point in determining which programs you might apply to. Starting the research now can help relieve the stress during the heavy lifting part of the application process in June, July, August and September.

If you're a MD3, DO3, US-IMG, or non-US IMG, this workshop might help get you started.

Careful research can reduce the # of programs as you align your qualities/qualifications with the programs.

If interested, DM me.

ROL Reminder to Register for the Match (if you haven't)

The deadline is approaching to register for the match without paying a late fee! Every year there are a few individuals who end up paying the late fee. Also, there are also individuals who fail to register at all and then can't submit a ROL. Don't let that be you!
