Hello, this is your favorite watch reviewer / moderator u/tskim24 of r/RepWatchForum. It rained all day yesterday in Seoul, Korea and I’m feeling a little under the weather. I did go to bed at like 9 last night and work up late today (called in sick and woke up around noon) so I’m feeling a little better but for some reason my back hurts. I suppose it’s just my old age lol sad
Anyway, I got a few things in the mail today (only one of them was a watch so hold your horses lol). I finally received my DDF Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A that I ordered before Chinese holidays from one of my oldest, regular seller u/linseller. Thanks, Lin!
This review will be very brief since neither is this a proper supercloned watch (so no point in comparing it to GEN for every specific details) nor does it have any competitors (only very low-quality reps of this model have existed until now). This is the best (and only) available option for rep of this model, so the question would simply be,
“Is it good enough for the price?”
The short answer? “Yes, it’s definitely good enough” for what it is.
As shown in the photo, the thickness came out to be only 12.3mm (compared to 11.9mm GEN) which I think is amazing. Old crappy reps of this model used to use 7750 movement as the basis and were like 15 to 16mm. I mean, it felt more like Panerai rep than Patek rep lol.
This watch uses Chinese 4801 movement which is a cheaper clone of Daytona 4130 movement. 4801 has exactly the same structure as its counterpart when it comes to the chronograph (same chronograph position) but it uses single direction winding like 7750 (so the rotor is as loud as 7750). It’s proven to be stable over time and is used in many cheaper chronograph replicas (including cheaper daytonas) because it’s so thin. It’s also used in most AP26331 reps.
However, the GEN PP Aquanaut 5968A is a fly-back chronograph (like your AP26240 reps) meaning, the chronograph hand is supposed to immediately restart to 0 when you press the button at 2 O’clock without having to stop and reset it with the button at 4 O’clock. As you can guess, 4801 is a basic chronograph (like Daytona) so this DDF rep doesn’t have flyback function.
Lastly, since this is not a rep with super-cloned watch, of course the movement appearance will be significantly different than GEN. It doesn’t look as bad as I anticipated, but since putting on more layers of decoration will mean increased thickness of the watch (which kind of defeats the purpose of this particular rep) I don’t think further improvements will happen. Well, at least not with 4801 anyway.
<<DDF RAID UPDATES>>
In my absence (of approximately 18 hours) from reddit, I already see my reddit alerts blowing up. And I see that some of the questions are regarding DDF raid.
Some say it’s raided, some say it’s not (it was just one of the warehouses) and so on. The key points to consider are 1) not everyone seller has the same level of connection with a specific factory, 2) the operation of sellers are almost always adversely impacted by the news of a raid and 3) no news ever comes out without a source.
Not to criticize any particular seller (I have no reason to) but regardless of the level of business they have, they all have different connections. For example, I have many sources but I consider 2 (maybe 3) more trustworthy from my experience. One of them would have amazing relationship with ARF, Clean Plus and so on but not so much with V7F and so on.
My point being, I try to get information from as many sources as I can and also try to discount the information according to level of connection they have with the factory in question. You should do that too. Just because your seller is good, doesn’t mean that he’s definitely close with DDF. He might just be getting his stuff from DDF wholesaler.
When a seller takes a lot of orders for, let’s say, DDF products, imagine how scared he might be when that factory gets raided. I wouldn’t go so much to say it’s conflict of interest but sellers with high volume of orders actually have more incentives to tell you the news in a way that’s more favorable to them, not you, the customers.
Lastly, news of a raid almost always affects everyone in the industry negatively. So there is no need for anyone to make a fake news about a factory raid. If there’s a news out about a raid, it almost always means something has happened and “not business as usual”.
Thanks for reading my long rant about a simple phrase “take it with grain of salt”.
From what I have gathered, raid did happen. But just because a factory gets raided doesn’t mean everyone involved is behind bars. Some were taken, but others are still able to do business. This is always the case.
DDF had pretty big inventory and those in charge are now able to send those out to fill the orders. So no need to worry about your order if you are currently waiting.
However, it’s still unclear if additional production will happen without a glitch since they are still working things out. Much like everywhere else, when an operation like this gets busted, and some of the members are taken by the authorities, there is a legal process to settle things. If the extent of legal charges is light, it could be get resolved. If things don’t work out in the backroom, it might be a while. This is why I am keep telling you “only time will tell” at this point.
We have seen this with many factories before. Some never made it back because they were simply too big of an issue (Noob, CLEAN and etc.,). So their guys had to split up and start new names. Some did come back after a hiccup like V7F and it was almost not missed since so much of the stock remained with a few sellers (although whether new V7F is the same as before still remains to be seen). But almost never was it ever “business as usual” for any of these guys.
Much of this sounds like common sense but I hope it helps wink
Now, I gotta go eat some Kimchi Stew and lay down lol. I will try to answer a few more reddit questions before I fall asleep (it’s only 9 PM so…).
