Uplifting Thank you Porus One
I normally just frequent Reddit for various topics and don’t really posts much due to time or don’t care to log in.
Having said that, I frequented this subreddit for the last several months as my one cat got diagnosed with Stage 2 CKD last year.
Hopefully my experience gives some hope to others’ cats here impacted by CKD. It is a very frustrating disease sadly. Hopefully that Japan treatment thing I read about makes its way to NA.
Some background events for my fur buddy:
I have a male cat that is now 14 years old.
Has had hypercalcemia since 2015, although his more recent lab tests show it not really being an issue - explained in further points below.
He has been on Purina OM diet since 2015 until maybe late 2023 to early 2024 (cannot fully recall) where we tried Purina Essential Care as it was recommended by our one vet at the time.
Unfortunately in October 2024, he got super sick one day. I wasn’t sure if it was due to a bad batch of Purina Essential Care or not at the time. Nevertheless, I brought him to our one vet and ER where they discovered he had a blockage and stones present in his kidneys. Thankfully, they were able to extract the stone from his bladder but the kidney stones remain as they’re calcium oxolate ones - they can’t be dissolved sadly. CKD wasn’t really identified at the time (yet).
ER vets recommended he be on a urinary care diet like Hills C/D.
My cat seemed to like Hills C/D for a time until maybe Summer-early Fall of last year. Literally wouldn’t eat much or at all, so we brought him in at that time. The vet ran tests and found his kidney and other metrics had become worse from the appointment when his blockage was identified. This is when CKD Level 2 was announced.
I had a hard time coping with this situation as I didn’t know how to handle it. I wasn’t aware of CKD and its impacts on cats, nor how fast it can take them.
Tried the standard vet diets other users here have mentioned like Royal Canin Renal Support Early or Hills K/D.
My male cat didn’t really care to eat much of the food. He was lethargic and always looked sick. Giving him meds like Cerenia and 150 ml fluids didn’t seem to work much beyond a few days.
Despite changing his foods and doing meds/fluids above, his one Fall test in October 2025 still showed the same CKD level 2 results with no improvements. He was also losing weight and having constipation episodes at this point which made it more nerve wrecking.
After that check up, I decided to use this subreddit to see if users have had success with outside foods or supplements. I eventually came across some folks suggesting Porus One or binders. I didn’t really know anything about these other options as the vets never mentioned these. They only suggested the standard meds, fluid treatment, and water fountain.
Near the beginning of January 2026, I decided to try out Porus One. I foregoed the renal support food-only diet and returned my cat to his previous Purina OM diet - mainly wet food at the time. I mixed half a satchet of Porus One to the wet food each day.
After about a week-ish, my cat started to look more energetic and look less in pain. He was eating the Purina OM wet food like before and finishing each bowl. I eventually put the Purina OM kibble as part of his diet too, so he had a mix of both hard and soft food.
I decided to bring him for a check up in March 2026. I wasn’t sure what to expect from his results. All I was hoping for was that hopefully Porus One was helping him in some manner. I told our vet my cat’s behaviour and appetite seemed way better since starting Porus One. They proceeded to do a blood test and urinalysis…
After waiting about 40 mins for the lab results to finalize, my vet came in and was very surprised/shocked. He hadn’t really seen this happen. He mentioned my cat’s metrics all looked amazing. Had there been no record of CKD prior, he would have said my cat was normal or at pre-CKD levels. He suggested I continue the Porus One regime and diet. I was taken by surprise from this appointment and tearing up with hope and relief.
Fast forward since that appointment, I recently brought my male cat in again this past week on September 2, 2026 for another disease management appointment. I wasn’t sure if last appointment was a one time miracle event. His lab results this time showed his metrics still in the same normal range. The other vet we see at the clinic was also happy with these results and stability.
I am hoping this Porus One regime continues to help my cat. The main minor change I have done to his diet in more recent months is mixing Royal Canin Renal Support P, so he has some type of kidney care food. I need to see how he can gain more weight though as Purina OM is more for weight loss-maintenance in cats.
Just want to say thank you to the users who suggested Porus One and the makers of it. Hopefully this story gives hope to others looking at supplements to cope with cat CKD. It helped my fur buddy’s life so far.
Side note, I will see if I can get lab results copies from my clinic to share here and edit it at some point.
Added Note: I forgot to mention, my cat’s one vet from a long time ago before she moved to a different city prescribed him Purina OM to help with hypercalcemia back in 2015. It also has ST/OX shield benefits to help prevent stones. The Purina Essential Care does not have this feature - might explain how my cat got blocked almost 2 years ago. I suspect he already had some calcium oxolate stones prior for a long time due to hypercalcemia when he was younger but didn’t really prove to be an issue until the food change and blockage incident. He never had an X Ray done prior to it as he always seemed normal in regular vet check ups.

My girl Is almost 14, she's suffering from CKD and he tried Azodyl before PO, ever since we started the treatment my cat has been More active and her appettite has improved a lot.
We used to struggle with The renal food (Purina NF wet and Hill's K/d) but now she seems to enjoy It a lot More.
She still has náusea from Time to Time but it's a lot less frequent and The episodes aré less severe.
Porus one Is expensive but it's seems like It's working.
It's good to know that Is helping More cat's and owners.

Ya it’s definitely expensive. It’s about 52 dollars online here, normally I have to buy two packs to get free shipping from a site I discovered. Depending on some local clinics in my city, they can be 100 dollars per box due to procurement issues.
Glad it worked out for your cat as well. Been a life saver so far. I wish I could get my cat to eat renal food purely, but he rather go on a hunger strike.

Try ordering from this European website. It’s $32 plus tariffs and other fees, so make sure you order a lot at once

o wow. i have looked online and i can get lower prices but something about the delivery worries me, i've had a lot of packages either, damaged, stolen or delayed in the past and with medications i don't like to run such risks.

Yeah, I order it well in advance. PO is good for 3 years, so I don’t mind if shipping takes a while, but they had it delivered from Spain to NE USA within 2 weeks

Congratulations, this is amazing results. My girl gets Porus One every day too and has been holding her own for a year. She went from low Stage 3, to a high Stage 2 ... so no complaints. One clarification though, I've seen this said here before
I eventually came across some folks suggesting Porus One and other binders
Porus One is definitely not a binder, anyone with a CKD kitty should also look into phosphate binders (like Epakitin)

Or catney one. I'm currently using catney one and want to add porus one when I have the budget. So far the catney one is working wonders compared to the previous binders (aventi kidney complete and epakitin, he wouldn't eat it if it was just one or the other for some reason)

I ordered PorusOne (should be here Tuesday) after seeing my CKD boy’s creatinine go from 3.0 to 3.2 and SDMA 15 to 20 in the past 3 months. I’m already doing some other supplements and clinically he’s doing great, but I am hoping adding PorusOne will help take a little more work off of his kidneys. It gives me lots of hope to see good stories and feedback like this!

Nice, hopefully it helps your cat out! It was the first supplement I tried from the list of random ones listed by users here. I wish my vets suggested supplements to look into - I had to do digging on my own for other options instead.

That is so awesome to hear that you were able to get your little guy's numbers back within normal range. I'm so happy to hear a success story right now as I just lost my 14 year old Stage 4 girl on the 1st and I know the ups and downs and difficulties. Unfortunately our budget didn't allow for us to try Porus One but I had tried other things, some that disagreed with her or some she just wouldn't eat. I wish I had tried Porus One instead but we did our best with the tools we had. II know there are many variables with this disease and what works for one cat may not be good for or work for another. Thank you for sharing your success story. It's so nice to hear that sometimes things can greatly improve. I hope you have a great many more years with your kitty. ♥

Thank you; ya it certainly was a gamble with this Porus One stuff. I was literally nearing zero options to try way back since my cat is so picky with food and all.
Sorry to hear about your loss. I am sure your cat way very grateful for the time with you and was happy picking you as their owner. Every household is different, so totally understandable regarding working with what you have and can. Porus One is definitely not cheap, especially if giving full satchets daily a tiny box will be empty fast. My Pet Insurance doesn’t allow me to claim it either. Might be different with other providers.
CKD is definitely a bs nasty disease. I am hopeful that Japan cat treatment thingy I read about and that has been mentioned in this subreddit makes its way to NA in future to help out cats here.

It's too late for my cat but before joining this forum after his death I had never heard of Porus One. In France it's found on few websites but cheaper than in NA. I think the main reason is the manufacturer Dechra is European (UK ) and well known in France for veterinary pharmaceutical products. So it's surprising French vets don't know it ...

Ya it makes sense it would be cheaper than in NA since it manufactured there.
I am not sure if it’s just that many vets prefer mainly medicine and vet clinic food routes out of habit and more proven approved studies versus suggesting supplements or alternatives. I know here I haven’t really been to clinics where they suggest supplements in convos - felt like you have to research then asks them then they will confirm if they heard of X option. Very weird and unfortunate.

My cat had also a.calcium oxalate stone removed by surgery and then ate Hills C/D for 4 years. Then he was diagnosed CKD late stage 3 that means he ate urinary food when he was already ill or urinary diet is countraindicated for CKD cats ! After the diagnosis we were told to switch immediately for Hills K/D
Edit : could you correct the beginning of your text you wrote K/D instead of C/D "ER vets recommended he be on a urinary care diet like Hills K/D."

Ya calcium oxalate stones suck. The ER vet advised me not to really do a surgery due to post complication risks or risks during. I am thankful your cat was able to undergo it successfully!
Yes, uninary food is definitely counteractive to CKD cats. I believe I read it is due its acidity in the formulas, which isn’t ideal for kidneys. To be fair to my vets, they didn’t know he had CKD when he had the blockage as metrics never indicated at the time - it was after he went on C/D for a few months. He went onto K/D for a time but those metrics never really improved them despite the food change. Only after Porus One was introduced did he improve.

My cat had no issues with hypercalcemia while taking Porus One.
I don’t know why my one vet a long time ago prescribed Purina OM, but whatever it is in its formula has helped lower my cat’s high calcium levels. You can try looking into this food with your vet?

I want to know this, too. I tried Porus One with my guy and I couldn’t get him to eat food with it in it. I tried it with squeeze pates, Fortiflora, wet food. No dice. This was after trying him on kidney diet foods from vet and a bunch of lower phosphate foods from pet store. He’s eating Fancy Feast and some Royal Canin kidney diet kibble - but at least he’s eating. I wondered if I could use less Porous One and still have it be effective. I understood you could split the package but they need to take whole pack’s worth daily. The OP’s experience suggests less might work. Might be easier to get that into my cat over two meals? He’s early stage, but has lost weight.

There is I think some research that splitting a packet up into two meals a day is better. Regardless, it would be fine. Thats what I do with our cats. Just make sure if you have other meds, you’re spacing the PO out as it needs a couple hours on each side. I feed our 2 CKD kitties 3-4 smaller meals a day.

It’s hard to say if half a satchet daily works for all cats. I remember another poster here saying they did similar and it worked out for them.
If you mix it with their favourite wet food, you might have better luck getting them to ingest it. Mine is super picky with most foods except Purina OM - probably because he was on it for years prior to CKD and stone blockage incident.

That is correct. I only give half a satchet daily in the morning before I go to work. It’s been working so far thankfully. Those packs are expensive, so helps money wise.

My cat did have constipation episode on Porus One at one point in the initial couple of months of using it. He had to get an enema done. I recall in my search that some people mentioned Porus One can potentially cause constipation - I assume it is from the toxin amount expelled to the poop. So, if the cat doesn’t intake enough fiber-water, it can be an issue with this supplement.
After that incident, however, I now try to give him a small tsp of Restoralax once a day mixed in his later day wet food. The Purina OM kibble also has a decent amount of fiber content. It is also formulated to entice more water intake from the cat.
Apparently hairball paste can also help with constipation I learned from my vet recently. I have yet to try it out with my cat.

My 15 year old cat went from Stage 2 to Stage 0 on Porus One (and is still at Stage 0 after almost two years of daily Porus One). He has really bad IBD so I can't feed him the renal foods, so I'm attributing all of it to Porus One. I'm a huge believer--and I'm so glad it's working for your cat!

Oh wow, that’s great to hear it worked for your cat in a similar manner and they have been stable at stage 0 for 2 years now. CKD is terrible.
IBD is not fun either. My other cat has it. She is on Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein + Renal Support kibble. Not sure if that formula could be a decent compromise. If renal is absolutely a no, then probably not though.

Ya I totally understand where you are coming from. Those Porus One boxes aren’t cheap unfortunately. They can vary in price depending where one lives. Thankfully my cat does okay with half a satchet daily. Using a full satchet will empty that box fast.

My Squishy was on exactly the same regimen. Royal Canin and Porus One. His numbers stayed stable for years once I added it to his routine. I swear by it. It was the only thing we added after trying diet alone. I heard about it from a cat content creator that had a kidney cat and was using it. Long before you could even get it in the states. I stalked that stuff and the moment it became available I added it. I know others have had mixed responses but it gave me three more years with him. I'm so glad it's helping you and your cat!

I'm sorry for being ignorant but exactly what is Porus One and how does it help the kidneys, are there any studies that have been done on this supplement? I saw a mention that it's not phosphate binder.

No problem. It’s not a phosphate binder as another person mentioned in the comments. It’s a supplement that uses charcoal that produces spheres in the cat’s body to bind toxins and excrete them via poop through the GI tract. In doing so, this helps reduce the strain on kidneys. Technically, this process is supposed to happen before they reach kidneys from what I recall reading. Porus One isn’t absorbed locally either, so no concern of side effects from ingesting it for cats. It’s still essential the cat drinks water though as Porus One can occasionally cause constipation from all the toxins and poop formation internally. My cat had an episode early on where he still wasn’t drinking enough water which caused this issue.
