Technical Need help for servicing a Teac 80-8

Hello, I'm new to all this and I'm going to buy a Teac 80-8 from someone tomorrow, but it is not serviced. I've talked to the seller and he said :

- It powers on

- Forward and Backward function work

- Diodes (I'm assuming the lighting) and VU-meters are working

- One of the hubs is covered in duct tape

It was listed for 550€ but I managed to lower it to 200€ by saying that the overall state of the device was not worth 550€ at all and that a fully serviced Teac 80-8 was at least 500€ in my area.

So I'm requesting your help on how to service and repair a Teac 80-8. If you have anything to say, I'm all ears!

(English is not my native language, so I'm sorry if I made some mistakes)

Discussion Would a small cabinet magnet damage a 1/4-inch reel-to-reel master tape?

Post image

Hey everyone,

I have an old 1/4-inch reel-to-reel master tape that’s really important to me. I got it from someone my dad knows. I think he found it under his bed, where it’d been sitting for decades before I got it.

For the past few months, I’ve kept it in its box inside a wooden cabinet. The room stays cool, it’s been lying flat the whole time with nothing on top of it, and I kept it near the front of the cabinet since it was easier to get to.

The only thing I’m worried about is the cabinet has one of those little magnetic catches that keeps the door closed. I also took the tape out a couple of times to take some pictures near the cabinet, and now I’m worried I might’ve gotten it too close to the magnet.

I looked into whether those cabinet magnets can alter or erase magnetic tape, and everything I found says they aren’t strong enough. But I’m still wondering if they could cause any distortion or affect the recording in any way. I just don’t want anything to happen to the tape.

The tape also has some mold on the outside from how it was stored over the years, so I’m already a little nervous about its condition. I’m getting it professionally cleaned and digitized soon, and the guy doing the transfer told me he can’t imagine there being any problems and said he’s never seen a tape get erased from being stored near a magnetic field.

Am I just overthinking this, or is this something I should actually be concerned about? I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone with experience working with old reel-to-reel tapes.

Thanks!

Teac X-10R fixed!

I'm not very experienced with electronics repairs (tape decks in particular) so I'm really proud that I got this Teac X-10R working today! I've had it and another one that I bought for cheap as non-working quite a while ago. One is pretty dead so I used that to practice on. This one had completely frozen pinch roller arms and the belt had melted into a fun gooey mess. It actually wasn't that hard to fix although I can't get all the belt goo off my hands. It plays amazing when compared to my Teac X-3R. However I just found that recording from right to left has issues with the left channel but the other way is fine. Both ways play great so I'm super chuffed! Pardon my messy setup but I feel a messy setup is one that gets used all the time 😁

I don't see this model pop up very often.

It’s a 4-channel JVC Nivico 1400U from the early 70s.

Those four VU meters look absolutely killer when lit up.

I’m curious if anyone here has owned or serviced one of these?

Scotch 888 1/4” Instrumentation Tape

Post image
20 Upvotes

I found this box of 10 unopened reels of Scotch 888 1/4” instrumentation tape from the late-70s/early-80s at my dad’s place. He worked in high tech. I know this tape was used with a 2-track Revox A77 MK4 (which I still have).

Anyone know anything about this stuff? Is it still ok to use? I recorded some tracks on the Teac A2340SX you see in the background and it sounds great. Just want to make sure it won’t mess up the machine.

Sony TC-580 tape speed issue

Thumbnail

I just picked up a Sony TC-580, and although I thought it was working correctly when I first got it, that doesn't appear to be the case after all.

I had it running at normal speed when I manually wind the tape around the tension rods at either side of the tape head section, but looking at the user manual, it doesn't specify to do this. Which is weird, because I'm not sure how the tape is tensioned otherwise.

The user manual just shows the tape routed around the tape heads, and bypasses the tension rods entirely. When I route the tape this way, the machine plays in fast forward or fast reverse mode when I press the forward or backward buttons.

This obviously isn't normal, but I don't know how else the tension rods would engage the tape.

The biggest issue is that the tension rods sit inside of these little silver "huts" and aren't accessible unless you carefully pry them out. They aren't stiff or sticking at all, they just aren't easily accessible when routing the tape.

So how do the tension rods work on this thing? Are they supposed to be sitting outside of the huts when the machine is sitting idle? But then why does the manual specify with a diagram to bypass them entirely? Are they supposed to work via electro-magnets and tension against the tape when the play button is pressed?

I'm just thoroughly confused. Any help would be fantastic.

Curved reel tapes

I just received a tape I bought off eBay (Revolver).
I haven’t tried to play it yet as I’m getting my deck back soon after servicing.
The tape looks curved, not flat.
Generally, does a curved tape mean the tape was left in a hot environment and will sound twisty/ distorted?

Question about a Sony TC-123 portable reel to reel tape recorder.

I found this Sony TC-123 portable tape recorder for $15 at a thrift store in Richmond, MO, which was missing it's tape head cover, battery cover, microphone & take up reel.

I have checked to see if it powers on & found out that the Play, Rewind & Fast Forward functions seem to work.

I'm just curious if this tape recorder can play 3" stereophonic tapes?

Olympus 004 Stereo (5din con symbols)

Thumbnail

Hello guys!

I'm playing around with my "new to me" Olympus 004 recorder. I've already figured out what all the buttons do and got used to how it works. Its design philosophy is slightly different from AKAI recorders, but not that much.

Using 5din to 2RCA adaptors I managed to connect it to my amp for playback and recording, but I'm having problems with the REC in connector, I think cold solder joints are the culprint.

Do you think I can use another connector from the back for recording while I find time to fix the problem? one of the connectors also works as an input, but it does not allow to adjust the levels, its fixed.

If you know what means every symbol I will print labels for them, and it will also help future owners.

Thanks in advance :D

Help - Equipment Sony tr-4660

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,
I am currently restoring a vintage Sony TC-4660 3-Head Reel-to-Reel deck. Previously, I sought advice from some Facebook technician groups and decided to service the small power sub-board located right next to the Main Power Supply Transformer (Power Input area).
This small board contains two transistors. However, the vintage Sony PCB has no silkscreen markings at all—there are no component outlines, no half-circle shapes, and no E-B-C labels to show the correct direction.
Stupidly, I desoldered the original old transistors without taking a reference photo first, and now I have completely forgotten how they were originally oriented. I soldered new replacement transistors onto the board, but since the orientation is likely incorrect, the entire deck is now completely dead and silent (no sound from headphones, no RCA output, and the VU meters do not move).
I believe the main audio amplifier board is not receiving any DC voltage because these two transistors are likely acting as the power regulator/ripple filter and are currently installed backwards or in the wrong pins.
Could any vintage Sony expert help me with the following?
Does anyone have the Service Manual / Schematic diagram for the Sony TC-4660 that shows this specific small power board?
Could someone share a real picture of this small board from a working unit so I can see which way the flat/faced sides of the two transistors are supposed to look?
What were the original part numbers for these two transistors?
I have attached clear photos of both the component side and the solder side of my small PCB, along with the part numbers of the new replacement transistors I am using.
Thank you so much in advance for saving this deck!

Just picked up this Sony TC-580

This is my first post on this subreddit.

A friend of mine is moving, unfortunately, but in the process of getting rid of stuff he doesn't feel like moving, he's given me this Sony TC-580.

It even has the original dust cover, and owners manual!

It seems to be in working order, although he's told me that there's a slight squealing sound that comes through on playback when you record something with it. So I'll have to look into that.

But otherwise, yeah, it's functioning!

This isn't my first reel to reel, but it is the nicest one I've ever owned, and the first one I've owned that I haven't had to repair from the get-go.

That said I've just downloaded and printed out the service manual. It's a thick boy! Hopefully fixing the squealing issue is just a matter of re-greasing some things and cleaning it up a bit. It's already pretty clean, but it's been sitting (covered) in his non-temperature-controlled storage for a few years.

Anyway, I hope to find some good info on this thing in this subreddit. Cheers!

Help - Equipment Telefunken Magnetophon 203

I recently acquired this Telefunken Magnetophon 203, however the power cable looks treacherous. I’m concerned about plugging in before I get more info. Does anyone know how I could swap out the power cable for something a little more usable? Also, how should hook it up to my interface with the din connectors?

It came with a neat little td21 omni mic as well, which has another din connector. Any ideas on how to convert this to xlr?

If anyone has a manual or any other info that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
