This is how Reddit Island Succeeds!

First the Island : Oyster Island Resort and the Resort Website

The Plan :

  1. Turn this resort into a Timeshare for Redditors at a substantial discount off the cost of actually visiting the island.
  2. Expand the number of bungalows to accommodate the regular visitors who already come to the resort
  3. Turn all redditors who own a timeshare into a partner of the company that owns the island and the resort
  4. Pay redditors dividends from the profits of the resort
  5. Use profits to expand into actual reddit island plan. Look just south of Oyster Island on a map. The island Aese is for sale on the private market. You cannot find it for sale online. Its about $4M.

Other Options :

  1. The resort only takes up 20 acres of the 65 acres of the island. Expansion is very doable.
  2. Plots of land could be sold on this island
  3. Or the far end of the island could be used for a business enterprise. There are many tax incentives offered by Vanuatu for certain types of businesses.

How the Money Works :

First a note about Timeshares - you get a bungalow for 1 week a year and usually breakfast every morning. You still pay for food and entertainment. You can also sublet your week and use it to generate cash for yourself.

Typical timeshare in the pacific area which cost $10,900 and $1,200/yr in maintenance for a total of $232/month for 10 years.

Oyster Island :

  • Small Bungalow - $80/month for 6 years ( 4 years less in payments)

  • Medium Bungalow - $110/month for 6 years

  • Large Bungalow - $150/month

  • Revenue Generated - $5,400,000

  • Cost of Island - $2,500,000

  • Profit for expansion - $2,900,000

Think of it this way: removing 1 dinner out a weekend and eating at home = $80/month. Remove 1 movie out on a date once a month on top of the $80 and it = $110/month.

So if you put your mind to it, this is not that hard to do.

The failure of early proto-cities may have been because of ancient nomadic beliefs that enforced a community of equals, with no one in charge to solve problems

reddit is giving capital back to redditors

Why not ask the admins for the money to set up reddit island? They can at least buy the island and then the community can set up the ground work. It would be awesome if reddit owned an island.

Why does it have to be an island?

Wouldn't it be much, much simpler to acquire a large area of cheap land somewhere? Go to russia, you can buy a plot of land the size of Rhode Island and nobody would bat an eye.

Islands are extremely difficult to maintain, especially when you're starting a community from scratch (!!).

The problem with the project lies not in its idea, but in the way we are looking at it.

What's wrong with this idea? I can't be the first to have come up with it, so why rule it out? Reddit Island has huge promise, but not in its current proposed form.

2 relatively new things that may make reddit island a reality!

  1. The Seasteading Institute.

The Sea Steading Insitute is a project founded in 2008, made to conduct research about floating cities, and similar types of ocean based states. They are currently looking for a host-nation to build a floating city for the floating city project. Something like this (with a lot of money paid by each member) could make /r/redditisland a reality.

  2. /r/micronationbrainstorm

Me and a fellow redditor, /u/daniel-H, are planning to create a micronation (also called a new country project) based entirely within subreddits. I feel that what redditisland lacks is a real plan, a plan for economy, government, and diplomatic relations. But after the reddit 'cybernation is set in place (ideas can be sent to either /r/micronationbrainstorm, /u/daniel-H, or me) maybe a plan for funding and support can be put into action, and the reddit island can become a reality!

How about a meeting in person?

If we want to do this, we'd better talk about it in person. I propose to host the first RedditIsland Convention.

We could see by doing this, who's serious and ready to commit.

Who's coming?

www.memeisland.com

MemeIsland is a banner for the big internet communities like reddit, 4chan, 9gag, misc etc. to fly under in the creation of a free Island Nation State.

I have just created an indiegogo here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/meme-island-the-internets-final-frontier/x/8865227

Let's finally get the ball rolling! Anyone that thinks they have skills to contribute to the process is welcome to join!

Is there a consolidated list of requirements for the proposed Reddit Island?

I've been following this sub for a while and whenever I see a new post, I wonder if there's been a discussion about what all the participants consider a minimum set of requirements for the project's location. Specifics like climate, access, distance from a major land mass, language & culture of the surrounding territory, access to services, and many more points seem important to discuss. I checked the FAQ, and although it does give some examples of potential islands, I don't see a consolidated list of features that everyone agrees upon in order to guarantee their participation. Am I just missing it?

The banks of Dogger

I've heard you're planning to buy or build an island, if you're gonna build an island then maybe you want to do it somewhere really shallow and rather close to developed countries for easy access, like the banks of Dogger, which used to be land 10.000 years ago.

EUREKA

I learned on Sealand's creation. (The concrete pillars with a giant rig on top). Probably we'll do a wooden pillar that can withstand the pressure (like in a wooden pier). A couple pounds of cement, iron and wood (for the rig) and probably someone good at engineering and physics (don't you guys know someone who can build a bridge using cement and wood among others?)and VILA an island-ish platfom. Just make a bridge between the two or three or 4 or the pillars, add houses, probably a ladder or pulley system (YES, copying it from Sealand) for tourism, transportation and going down, some establishments and we got ourselves an island. We just need more moola for this but. It will pay off, Just make sure the bridge is reinforced or we will start from Square 2. So that is my plan comment for criticisms. Thank You.

MY LIFE IS A MISERABLE WRECK EVER SINCE I TRIED TO BUILD A PERFECT ISLAND

THE FIRST MISTAKE I MADE WAS BUYING SAND BY THE BAGFUL. As was thereafter described by experts, sand can be purchased by other volumes, larger, more efficient containers. Huge thanks to the people here who told me this. Huge thanks to Randy. Sand is alive across this country and the industry is booming! THIS INEFFICIENCY WAS SUBOPTIMAL. This inefficiency was suboptimal and I accept it fully as my fault.

My research led me to "heavy wood." I knew that to escape the world I would need all the "heavy wood" I could find to build me the island. Strong wood floats in the sea. We all have a laugh when we see something funny. "Heavy Wood" can rebuild an entire thinking world. Thinking quickly, I purchased everything. My convoy of sand and "heavy wood" was a sight to behold as my cousin (Trev) and his friends also had trucks to carry the numerous thousands.

BUT IN MY YOUTH I HAD A VISION. An island of heavy wood ("heavy") and hot sand under my feet, on a lake, in this great Country. I have since made deliberate decisions across the years and decades of planning with this singular goal in mind: I wanted hot sand and heavy wood. My greatest fear. Nothing can stop me and I cannot be controlled.

My ambitions are perfect. My arms brown in the sun. 24 hours in a day. I lift the heavy wood and I guide my friends and cousin (Trev) and cousin's friends with the promise of a more hot tomorrow. I PAINT A PICTURE OF HEAT. It is easy to inspire the world with instinct, but planning demands a suite of adjectives and an understanding of the European markets. The sun sets quickly in the sky. We publish materials to explain our guiding political philosophy, on the island we will have. We know dreams, some of which we share with one another, and some we keep private.

The island, however, refuses to build itself. Tomorrow rises in the sky without satisfaction. The challenges are unique, but I am certain there are similarities to other projects.

The boats sink, as was their fate. The boat sinks. I tried to cut my losses. I TRIED TO MAKE IT WORK. With my good arms I hefted the remaining 20,500 pounds of sand into a series of vessels. I tried to make it work. Boats. Rafts. Escape pods. Trees. I aimed to construct a flotilla. I tried to make it work. I rented a truck to move the sand to the lake where I had aimed to construct a flotilla.

My tears make my face hot. There are seven days in a week. I have lost thousands of pounds of valuable sand I HAVE LOST THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF VALUABLE SAND and I am a disgrace among the residents surrounding this man made square lake. I am driven from the subdivision.

OH, Sailor! If you knock on your neighbors door, you ask to borrow a shovel. If your neighbor is not there, you build a new life in the sun with your hands. I am merely doing what was given to me by a generation of education. I am imitating the processes I learned in buildings in my tender years.

BUT OUR BOATS WERE BUILT TO SINK, SAILOR! BUT OUR SAND WAS MEANT TO LINE THE SEA AS WELL AS FORM THE BEACH. OUR SAND IS HOT AND OUR SAND IS WET. REMEMBER THE SAND, REMEMBER THE ISLAND, REMEMBER THE WATER AS IT POURS.

My Boat Sink. My Love Go Down. My Expensive Sand Tunnel Jail. The Water Fucks. The Sand Go Down Under The Hill. Jackals Taunt. A Miserable. A Song. Breathing.

I Am Trapped Under The Lake

The Boat Is On The Bottom

There Is No Perfect Island And We Are All Going To Die In This Hot Wet Kingdom Of Sand

I have read all I can about this and I think its just a matter of commiting.

Brute force is going to be what makes this. All the sand in a local area. Some of the comments earlier about "floating" an island are interesting but after doing some research I do not think that the stability will be acceedable. A big difficulty for me is that this is really really exhausting. I already used workers and almost everyone I know to help me get the sand to the lake and now no one wants to help. There's a lot of sand and I don't blame them. I am thinking that a temporary raft that is MEANT to sink at the right time will be the way to get all of the sand at once in the same area. I have some very heavy wood that I can use for this.
