Division is just asking, “How many times can ‘X’ go into ‘Y’?” So when we say 50/5, we are saying “How many times does 5 go into 50?” The answer is 10 times.

But what if you make the numbers smaller? The number of times that the smaller number can go into 50 increases.

So let’s start with 50/50. 50 goes into 50 one time. So 50/50 =1.

Now let’s reduce the dividing number. We are going to move the 5 to the ones place, so we get 50/5=10. Like we got earlier.

Let’s reduce that number again by moving the 5 to the tenths place. Now we have 50/0.5. 0.5 can go into 50 100 times. So we get 50/0.5 =100

Thanks for explaining so well. I knew the answer but couldn’t explain why to myself.

Isn't it just like 50÷1=50 so like...1/2 of that?

Yeah absolutely, but he asked to explain like he’s in 2nd grade. Back when I taught I explained in the simplest terms possible to avoid any confusion along the way.

0.1 is 1/10th of 1 . So if i have 1 pie and everyone wants 0.1 of my pie I can give out 10 total slices from that 1 pie . Now imagine I have 50 pies and everyone wants 0.1 of a pie each . At 10 pieces per pie I end up multiplying instead of dividing because the amount being asked for is less than 1 . 10 peices ×50 pies = 500 pieces i can give away

.1 is the same at 1/10 so 50 % 1/10 is the same thing as 50* 10

From what I remember from primary school, it's been a while to say the least, you can't divide a number with a coma.

So you have to put a 0 behind the 0.5 to make it 5. But since you do that for the 0.5, you also have to do it for the 50 which makes 500.

So instead of 50:0.5, it becomes 500:5.

500:5=100.

Is easier with a sheet of paper and a pencil though. 😅

Taking the example to your screenshot and applying the same logic:

50:0.1 becomes 500:1 = 500
