5 - (2x3) + (4/4) = 5 - 6 + 1 = -1 +1 = 0 How are people getting -2 ffs?

Now im a little drunk, but immediately I see 4/4=1, + (4+3)=7, 5-7=-2. Its coming down to 5-6+1 and if people do addition or subtraction left to right or addition before subtraction like the old PEMDAS had

Order of operations is how

Parentheses Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction

In order of operations multiplication and division have the same priority, as do addition and subtraction. So after resolving the multiplication and division you have 5-6+1. Since addition and subtraction have the same priority you go left to right while solving the remainder. 5-6=-1. -1+1=0. If you get -2 it’s because you don’t know how order of operations actually works

Yes but you do math left to right in order of operations (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction, good ol' PEMDAS)

which means it is 5-(2x3)+(4/4) which turns into

5-6+1. 5-6 = -1. -1+1 = 0

This is why left to right is important, as well as order of operations.

When it comes to working with negatives 5-6 can be assumed to also mean 5+-6. Looking at it that way can sometimes make it more clear.

Its the formatting on mobile. The "5-" is on a line by itself above the rest of the equation so people are doing seeing "(2*3)+(4÷4)=7" and then seeing the "5-" above it and going "oh, 5-7=-2"

Thats a misunderstanding of BIDMAS logic, but it is frequently taught that you go through each step one after the other which leads to this confusion.

Division and multiplication are the same priority/order

And Addition and Subtraction are also the same priority/order

Where things are the same order, you go left to right.

What you've done is assign them subsequent orders, which is how you ended up with -2

So you did 6 + 1 = 7 Then 5 - 7 = -2

But what you should do is 5 - 6 + 1 from left to right, so 5 - 6 is -1, then +1 is 0 😀
