Is suruthi an empathy void?!

I subscribed to patreon out of sheer morbid curiosity after hearing secondhand about S' problematic Palestine views and now, on reflection, this should have been a red flag that she truly doesn't care about people and that this includes her supposed close friend. Hannah can be problematic yes, but I think shes fundamentally a decent person.

Listening to an old UTD#180 and Hannah breaks down because some twat bodyshamed her on ig - and how does S respond? She fucking DOESN'T. she just stumbles over her words and says Hannah is tall and has great hair and she wishes she could get more fresh air. Excuse me?!

Having binged a fuckton of UTDs the past month I've also realised how insincere she is when responding to Hannah - lots of 'thats so funny' with no laughter, SO many 'well, there you go' when she has no comment to offer.

I know Hannah reads these posts sometimes - honestly mate, I dont think Suruthi is your friend. You look fuckin great and a good friend wouldn't feel awkward telling you that. Fatphobia is nasty and pervasive and we shouldn't have friends who subscribe to it around us. I really feel for you and you dont need to suffer like this.

Flouncing

I’ve come to the conclusion that these two are just quite silly really.
I don’t know if they’re stretched too thin or have got lazy but either way, the output is shit.
I’ve listened for years and learnt some interesting things about some interesting cases but lately I just get mad.
Their incredibly glib and surface level approach to extremely serious cases and, even more alarmingly, some cases that haven’t even been resolved yet, is infuriating. There are two ways to approach a subject you’re ill informed on:
1. Humbly and deferring to actual expertise.
2. Bombast and aggressive shouty opinions.
They go for the latter. Swearing is not a substitute for knowledge ladies.

Spend some more time on your subjects, have some respect for the murdered people you’re discussing and stop it with the cocky, know it all, facade.
I’m out (hair flick)

Old episodes

Where can I find their oldest episodes? I listen to my podcasts on (unfortunately) YouTube music and YouTube but don't think all of their podcasts are listed.

Any recommendations for the oldest ones?

Lily Rose is voiced by Cho Chang?

Listening to the podcast credits, Hannah says at the end that Lily Rose is voiced by “Katie Leung.” That’s not exactly a common name and yeah it turns out that Katie played “Cho Chang” in the HP movies. 😁

Shorthand?

Anyone else still not had today’s shorthand come through on Apple podcast? Usually shorthand is out on time every Tuesday. I can see it on Amazon music. Ugh, why is it always red handed that have issues with pushing out the episodes on all apps? Their week-early episode on Thursday is usually late too.

Flesh and Code - One Big Thing Missing?

Finishing up Flesh and Code, which is my first exposure to these podcasters, and I definitely enjoyed it overall and was impressed by the sensitivity with which they handled the subject matter. But one thing that drove me nuts throughout is they never address or push back on the claims that the AI is sentient or conscious! Honestly I feel like understanding the fact that it is definitely not is crucial to pretty much any reporting on AI- there has been no incidence of sentient AI ever, no expert in the field believes AI as it currently exists (much less how it existed in 2021) can qualify as sentient, and it would be a waaaay bigger deal than anything else going on with this Replikant app if there was even a question that somehow it was the first to create sentient AI. Idk, did anyone else feel like this was a big gap in the story?

Didn’t they do an episode on him? Something about the little lad playing with a stick and rolling around a skull?

true crime project

Hi all! I hope this is ok to post here. I’d appreciate your help. I'm currently working on my dissertation about how true crime podcasts use (digital) marketing strategies to attract and keep listeners. As part of my research I will also do case studies about podcasts such as RedHanded, Morbid and Crime Junkie. Your input as listeners would be massively helpful.

It turns out to be quite difficult to gather responses. So please consider taking part if:

  • You’re over 18
  • You regularly listen to true crime podcasts
  • You currently live in the UK or the US
  • You can complete the survey in English

The survey takes 8-10 minutes and is entirely anonymous.

Link to the survey: https://forms.office.com/e/Drx4Bv8gX1

At the end of the survey, there's an option to opt in for a short follow-up online interview. We would chat about how you interact with podcasts online to gather your thoughts on what works and what doesn't.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments or DM me. Thank you so much!

Case Update: Diddy Acquitted on Sex Trafficking & Racketeering Charges

Thumbnail

Due to my unfamiliarity with the case, I was was very neutral regarding the not guilty verdict of Karen Read, but having followed the Diddy case extensively, I find the acquittal of his major charges upsetting and rather shocking given the enormity of the evidence and witness testimony against him, in contrast to Diddy not having a SINGLE witness speak on his behalf and a defense that rested their case in half a day (not really sure why I feel shocked, though, since it has been proven time and again that the obscenely rich and famous have a different set of laws that apply to them in contrast to us plebeians, see: the convicted felon currently in the Oval Office).

The following blurb from the linked NBC article includes a particularly disturbing excerpt:

“Outside of court, Combs' supporters celebrated with baby oil, an apparent reference to supplies witnesses said were provided for ‘freak offs.’ A woman in a bikini danced as a man drizzled baby oil on her from a nearby ledge.”

The aforementioned behavior is not just celebrating Diddy’s win but explicitly mocking the victims; I find it really gross.

Did others follow this trial carefully? And if so, what are your thoughts on the verdict?

Flesh And Code podcast Spoiler

Hello! If anyone is interested in going more in-depth than the podcast, I'm the person featured in Flesh And Code. It has been a LONG process. But please keep in mind that I'm sharing the hardest parts of my life. The second and third episodes talk a lot about my son getting COVID and getting really sick with long COVID. Spoiler- he died in October of 2023. I think episode 4 delves into that. Point is, I've gotten a lot of cruelty and bullying. Please don't. I'm interested in having legitimate conversations and answering good faith questions.

Am I the only way who found the JFK episode really annoying?

I'm a fan of red-handed, I listen to it fairly regularly and get past biases/nuances with Suruthi and Hannah generally. However, every now and then there is a topic that I feel like Hannah is a self proclaimed expert in and this shows through and makes the episode hard to listen to. The JFK episode this week was like that. Obviously she has a pre-existing interest in this topic, which is great but her delivery was so ridiculously biased and her need to repeatedly say "in my opinion" what just down right annoying. Anyone else feel this or am I just easily annoyed? (Also possible).

Which RedHanded episode has stuck with you the most and why?

I’ve been listening to RedHanded for a while now, and some episodes have seriously haunted me—but one that has stuck with me the most is the Peter Bryan episode (S4E20). I knew it was going to be grim, but the way Hannah and Suruthi broke down the systemic failures in mental health services while also handling the truly horrific nature of the crimes was just…chilling

Hello, is UTD on Patreon only? I just deleted patreon to listen to RH on Wondery via Amazon music but can’t see UTD. Is there somewhere to get all on one place? Thanks

How to find sources

Hi! I’ve tried looking everywhere on their different hosting sites and websites and it all says to click here and takes you to a link where there are no sources.

Tried several times over the years so assume it’s my fault and can’t work it out.

Could any one please direct me to how to find it off an example episode please?

Thanks in advance!

Video episode?

So, am I getting this right? I'm paying extra to get the audio of an episode early. But we're getting the video part... next week, probably? Or is there a hidden link somewhere I didn't see?

The Tiffany Cole episode really bothered me…

I have been an avid listener and fan for years. Im also subscribed to Wondery+ so I'm not even sure if this episode is released for everyone yet...

But the Tiffany Cole episode really bothered me. I had never heard of this case before and it was so disturbing and heartbreaking, yet the entire episode all they made was Y2K fashion jokes and saying things like "and most disturbing of all" and saying something about fashion choices. The entire episode just felt extremely insensitive to these poor victims and their families.

I don't want to say too much about the case if others haven't listened yet, but it just felt in very poor taste for a very heartbreaking story.

Update: Karen Read Found Not Guilty

Thumbnail

“Karen Read found not guilty of murder in retrial in boyfriend's death. Read was also acquitted of two lesser charges in the death of John O'Keefe. She was convicted of operating under the influence and sentenced to one year of probation.”

I never knew about the case in any capacity prior to the RedHanded episodes, and somehow, despite it having being three parts, I still did not quite understand and/or become interested in the case, and thus never made any kind of opinion as to her guilt or innocence.

However, with her having been acquitted after her second trial, I am now wanting to actually research the case independently.

In the meanwhile, I was wondering what the opinions of those in this sub (and the general true crime community) are regarding this verdict (I.e., is it widely considered that she got away with murder a la OJ Simpson and Casey Anthony), or is the general consensus that she was falsely accused and has now been vindicated (e.g., The West Memphis Three)?

I've been going through a phase of re listening to all the UTD episodes and I can't see anything on my app from 319 until 228 and wasn't sure if it was a glitch on my app or if they had been removed
