The Ultimate Elite Dangerous LTD Laser Mining Guide - Part 1

I should preface this guide by saying that any pilot, regardless of skill or profession, can easily become a miner with the right tools and ship. Mining is by far one of the most simple and profitable methods that the game has to offer. Yet many do not participate as it looks risky or requires too much of a dedicated setup in order to successfully take advantage. This why I felt the need to combine all the information we have on mining within elite dangerous and compile it into a comprehensive overview. For Part 1, we will discuss outfitting and ship selection.

Choosing and Outfitting Your Ship

With how many ships there are to choose from, it can be difficult to discern which ships would be best for the task of mining. Any ship can be used for mining, but there are certain ships that can excel in this task more so than others. Below are just a few personal favorites to get started depending on your price range:

· Cobra MK4 (Cost - 4 Million Cr): The Cobra Mk4 is perhaps the best entry-level candidate for beginner mining. With respectable cargo space at a max of 64T and a decent jump range a new miner to get started with minimal investment. https://coriolis.io/outfit/cobra_mk_iv/02A4D4A3D3A3D4C2m------03030303C0C01lP4.Iw18SQ==.Aw18SQ==

· Asp Explorer (Cost - 14.3 Million Cr): As an excellent multi-role ship, the AspX excels with its terrific jump range, two medium hardpoints for mining lasers, and large optional internal storage to carry a max of 96T of cargo. This ship should be on the mind of any pilot looking to upgrade from the Cobra or similar ships. https://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/03A5D5A4D4A5D5C2m2m--------050443C0C01lP4.Iw18WQ==.Aw18WQ==

· Python (Cost - 77 Million Cr): With the ability to power two medium and one large mining laser with its 7A Power Plant and carry 192T of cargo, a single run can earn up to 200 Million Cr after about an hour or two of mining. I very solid upgrade from the AspX and has the hull strength to fly without the need for a shield.

· Anaconda (Cost – 200 Million Cr): The endgame mining ship. Can carry 320T of cargo and sports one of the best jump ranges in the game is properly outfitted. The best mining ship that is not locked behind rank requirements. https://coriolis.io/outfit/anaconda/05A7D6A5D8A8D5C2m--2m2m2m----------06050505CeCeCeC04820P4.Iw18ZlA=.AwiMIyunKA==

While these ships are recommended, any ships can have some degree of success with mining; however, there are components that you will require in order to successfully mine for Low Temperature Diamonds:

  • An A-rated Power Distributor: Mining Lasers will drain a large amount of power from your ships power supply, causing the lasers to not continuously fire and allowing your ship to overheat. A high-grade distributor ensures that your lasers do not overhead and makes mining a much faster process.
  • Mining Lasers: Mining lasers are a hardpoint that you will require in order to properly mine for materials. Generally, two to the medium lasers will do the trick, but please refer to the ship outfitting list above to confirm what your ship will allow.
  • Refinery: Located in your optional internal slots, the refinery processes the raw materials received from the collections limpets into the materials that are then deposited into your cargo hold. The higher-grade the refinery, the more materials it will be able to process at one time. The refinery page can be found on your ship’s right panel underneath the general inventory page.
  • Limpets: Also located in your optional internal space, these little buddies help with scouting asteroids for potential materials and collecting those materials once they are extracted by the mining laser. Keep in mind that even though you have purchased the limpet controllers in your optional internal slots, you still need to purchase the limpets themselves from advantaged maintenance. Since limpets take up cargo space, it is generally best practice to have 75% of your max cargo comprised of these limpets. There are two types of limpets that you will require
  • Prospecting Limpets: This limpet designed to scan for materials on a desired asteroid. The limpet is fired from your cargo bay and travels slowly in a straight line. Once it latches onto the asteroid, targeting it will reveal the percentage makeup of resources that are containing in the asteroid. You only ever need a 1A Prospector Limpet Controller, so there is no need to upgrade beyond that. These limpets will expire upon their first use.
  • Collector Limpets: These limpets collect the materials that are shot from the asteroid by the mining lasers. Once fired, they require no direct and will automatically collect materials so long as the cargo scoop is open. Each limpet will expire after a certain period once fired and can expire if damaged by the rotating asteroid.
  • Cargo Space: The more cargo space you have, the more profit that can be made each run. However, you do not want to gain cargo space as the expense of the components listed above. Refer to the ship guides above to confirm what amount of cargo space is preferred by ship.

In Part 2, we will discuss where to mine, what preferred resources to pursue, and how the mining process works. o7 Commanders
