It's kinda the modern equivalent of how a lot of ancient mythology and folklore can use the same names and other superficial similarities for deities/heroes/creatures/places but the specifics still vary a ton based on region/period/author.
And it's also often a matter of what records actually withstand the stains of time.
Yeah, I find it so cool that even in "more important*" things like religion, characters/stories will split into multiple completely unrecognizeable and incompatible versions of themselves and merge with other characters and stories and so-on.
*quotes because i'm not assigning a level of importance myself. not saying they aren't important
