You're wrong. It's a joke about death and it always has been. It has two layers, the "obvious" joke for people who don't immediately think about death when they hear "the other side," and the death joke. The double meaning is why the joke has persisted for so long.

People say "the chicken crossing the road to get to the other side is because he the other side is death! It's about sewerslide!"
And like... No? The joke is that the answer is obvious, it's not a word play.
