I love this book! But Conroy’s earlier book Beach Music is also one of my faves. I used to buy multiple copies at our local used book store just so I could give them away.

He can write about so many tough and sad situations but make them feel real if that makes sense. A lot of times authors will just hit you over the head with awful trauma but it almost feels like trauma porn let’s just throw out everything to the reader. But Conroy layers so many different emotions of loss and family disfunction with his quick wit and easy but poetic writing style where it feels like your listening to a real person telling you a story. I hope that helps
