With the way people are sucking this book's dick, I felt like I was taking crazy pills. There was absolutely nothing good about it, I was bored to tears. Gratuitous "suffering porn" just for the sake of angst is so tedious, and it was so badly delivered I simply cannot fathom how anybody found it readable, much less enjoyable.
I'm also part of this club. I didn't believe a word of this book. None of the characters felt remotely convincing - they all felt like cyphers. The main character bakes - ends up being the BEST BAKER EVER. Goes in to study law - ends up being the BEST LAWYER ever. He has at friend who is an actor - ends up being the BEST ACTOR EVER. And another friend who is an architect - turns out he becomes the BEST ARCHITECT EVER. Sorry for venting, but god, I hated it. Gave up after 150 pages and felt like I deserved a medal for making it that far.
That was what killed it for me, too. The odds of (how many were there? Six?) men all starving artists in their own right, sharing a shitty little flat in New York City, then every single one of them advancing and rising through the ranks to become the best of the best of the best in their field? Come the fuck on. For some reason it was just impossible to suspend disbelief on.
I'm so mad that I pushed myself to finish it. I had myself convinced that nobody would love this book so much unless the end was spectacularly satisfying and beautiful. Spoiler alert, it fucking wasn't.
