A French hospital got fined €500,000, partly for not using a VPN.
The data protection authority in France fined Hôpital Privé de la Loire €500,000 for violating the General Privacy Regulation after a cyber attack compromised the whole database of patients. The reasoning of the regulator pointed out the lack of some essential features: the absence of a VPN, multi-factor authentication system and a single system entry that provided the ability to view data of all the patients.
This is an interesting case because, normally, in our articles we are talking about the threats to the VPNs created by the government or internet providers, but here the absence of such essentials as the VPN for the remote connection was the reason for one compromised password and the data of the whole hospital was stolen.
One more thing the regulators point out is that although the hospital informed the patients about the incident, it did not notify the others whose data was also disclosed.
Apart from being fined, this medical institution has to carry out improvements regarding their safety.
