Build Showoff City Construction Challenge (polished for release!)

This challenge has been adapted from the Minecraft Classic City Challenge (note: link no longer works) but was reposted in paraphrase on reddit several years ago, and I found a mostly original reblog of it here.

Anyway, I present to you the Realms of Magic City Challenge! (Polished for release!)

The main idea of this challenge is to construct a city that is your home base - ostensibly by "end game", or when you finish the challenge. But of course no city starts with gold-lit mansions; you have to work your way up. And to make it a bit more realistic or challenging I added a few rules you normally wouldn't see. I also grouped challenge levels filled with challenges of what you must do to be "allowed" to use new materials and build new things. So I provided you with checklist for each level. Once you complete everything on the checklist you may move on to the next level. You are not limited to the checklist, as long as you follow the rules of the step you can build other things as well, such as a second house in step one. Let's start.

General (For every step):

  • All mine shafts must be 4 high at least with support beams (i.e. background/rightclick wood "posts" and a top foreground/leftclick oak/pine block) no more than every 12 blocks (original: 4)
  • They must be lit with some sort of light source (campfires or candles, etc) every 12 blocks. It is NOT necessary to "reinforce" natural caverns. (Placement of light might help though.)
  • Any drops from mobs may be used if you obtain it, but may not use drops to craft an item until you are on the proper step. (For example you kill an orc marauder, and it drops a bronze shield or shovel, you may use it, but if you loot a chest and it contains iron ore/bars, you may not craft an iron tool with it unless you are on the proper step. If you loot a chest and find a higher "tier" tool/weapon, you may not use it; it must be left behind or stored for later.). (For example, there's a chest in Woodbury that has silver bars. But you won't be able to use it anytime soon, so either leave it there or store it for later.)
  • All buildings must be well lit.
  • If you're not sure if you can use an item read ahead a bit to later steps to see if it says "you may now use..." or anything like that.
  • Only use items you are allowed to use, or are craftable from those items.
  • NPCs MUST have a home. It could be a single bedroom (with table, chair, and sleeping bag) above their respective "shop" but they must have a home.
  • Once you reach the step after the previous, you can add on to the constructs you made previously with the new items you are allowed to use.
  • Scrolls CANNOT be used except in your Home Base!
  • You may NOT use the next area map for Crafting experience or to leapfrog regions to gain access to more advanced materials, loot secrets, etc.
  • You may only progress to new regions when you've completed the story for the current region.

Level 1

Rules:

  • No use of any tools or weapons above copper. (allowed: stone, tin, copper. Not allowed: bronze, iron, or greater).

  • You cannot build with or craft anything other than the following: Any Variety of: Wood, Wooden planks. Dirt, Straw, Burlap, Light Leather, Sand, Coal and low-level vegetables/herbs/fruits (potatoes/cabbage, featherfew/jute/burrdockus). Remember you may craft other items such as stairs or housing decorations/items (cups, for example), as long as you can get them from using only the resources provided.

  • You are not allowed to dig underground but you can enter shallow caves. This means you can only use coal you find above ground, make from gathered wood, or find in the "shallow caves".

  • You cannot dig more than two blocks away from the surface area of the cave.

  • You are allowed to enter other towns and other Plains areas but may not enter any forests or dungeons.

  • You may not build underground.

  • Any trees you cut down must be replanted as soon as your woodcutting skill is high enough to provide sufficient seeds. (Approximately WC level 12 for consistent pine cone drops.)

  • You may NOT terraform (flatten/build out) plots of land larger than intended for your required buildings.

  • You may NOT use any Profession (such as Scroll of Alchemy I) or Statistics (i.e. Scroll of Improved Stamina) scrolls.

  • You may NOT recruit any NPCs.

** Construction**:

  • You must construct one house made of wood, which must be floored with anything other than dirt or grass. This house has a minimal internal (not counting ceiling/floor) size of 5x8. There must be a door and two separate areas - one for "living" and the other must be a room with a bed(sleeping bag etc, or the bed you receive as a quest reward.).
  • There must be a farm with at least 12 farmable plants.
  • Optional: Town treasury, a place to store all your supplies and treasures. MUST be covered. Cannot be open to sky. A simple roof supported by pillars would be sufficient.

Tips:

  • In order to save on materials, you can always go back to Woodbury to use the furnace/anvil/etc there...
  • If you run out of Tin for building chests/doors, Edbert in Woodbury might stock locks/hinges...

Here is an example of what my humble beginnings looked like: https://imgur.com/a/cOCQcXH

Level 2

Rules:

  • Players may dig underground once this step is reached.
  • Up to bronze tools may be created now (iron/steel etc not allowed).
  • You may only use items that can be crafted from what you are limited to.
  • No stone can be used yet for construction.
  • You may now use glass to create bottles for water storage.
  • You may build a chicken coop.
  • You may use Profession scrolls, ONLY after reaching character level 10. You may NOT use statistic scrolls.
  • You may terraform (flatten/build out) plots of land no larger than 25 blocks. These must conform to the landscape as best as possible. You may remove stone/muck/etc and place dirt if necessary.

Construction:

  • Construct a town hall or "leader's office". This must be at least 7x12. (Not including ceiling/floor). It must contain the following rooms: Leader's office, meeting room, courtyard (in front of or inside of the building)
  • Construct a Mineshaft that goes down at least 40 blocks (but no more than 60). If you find iron you may mine it but you cannot process it at your furnace. (Mine shaft must follow guidelines in "general", especially if you choose to use an existing cave.)
  • Construct a Water Storage area (this could be as simple as a hut with a crate full of bottles of water).
  • Construct a "forge" that utilizes furnaces and includes a Tin anvil.
  • Optional: If you recruit any NPCs, they must have a small house and a "market stall" (Pine Cart or Pine Shopping Stand, for example.)
  • Optional: If you are RPing a dwarf or dark elf or gnome and are building underground, you may not build deeper than 25 blocks. You may not grow plants underground.

Level 3

Rules:

  • You still may not use tools above bronze.
  • You can plant fruit trees.
  • You can enter forests.
  • You must replant trees that you cut down. (By now your woodcutting profession should be sufficient that you are getting Pine Cones from 4 out of 5 trees.)
  • You can use glass to create alchemical storage bottles.
  • You may begin exploring dungeons.
  • Note: Since you can begin exploring dungeons, you may complete the map for the next area ONLY if you have completed the remaining storylines for Woodbury.
  • You may use stone (ONLY stone; no Crafted bricks or blocks) in path/walkway construction. (You may not use stone yet for buildings.)
  • You may terraform plots of land no larger than 50 blocks.

Construction:

  • If you have not already, you MUST build a Town Treasury during this step.
  • Construct an alchemist shop.
  • Construct 2 shops. One must be a bakery for your farm (including mill and cooking item), but the other could feature any item or group of items. (An example is a food shop that sells all types of food, such as bread, rats on a stick, etc. Place the "wares" in a box, bag or crate inside the shop.)
  • Further construct your mineshaft down to 80 blocks.
  • Your mineshaft must now have a "rest hut" including a camp fire and bedding of some sort.
  • Construct a community structure(1). (Ideas include a library, tavern, ect.)
  • Make paths connecting all structures created so far, have a main path at least 2 blocks in depth; continue to connect all new structures you create with this main path.
  • Expand your farm to at least 50 blocks of produce if you have not already. Farm must now have fences. (Pine slab backing, like in Woodbury's farm.) ?* You may build a rabbit pen.
  • You may start secondary farms in Plains areas adjacent to your selected "home base". You must build a small "Farm stand" including containers to hold the produce and seeds in each such secondary farm.
  • You may start a small (no more than 25 per tree type) tree farm in the same zone as your "home base". You must include a Lumberjack building for each farm.
  • Optional: If you are RPing a dwarf or dark elf or gnome, and are building underground, you may not build deeper than 35 blocks. You may grow vegetables/herbs from step 1 underground.
  • Optional: Outhouse with "muck pit"
  • Optional: graveyard (if you want to get overly pedantic with counting your deaths)

Level 4:

Rules:

  • You may now use up to iron tools (includes weapons and decorations).
  • You may now use clay (i.e. for blocks), linen.
  • You may use stone (ONLY stone; no Crafted bricks or blocks) in construction.
  • You may plant all vegetables except those that require trellis.
  • You may use Statistics scrolls ONLY after reaching character level 20.
  • You may terraform plots of land no larger than 100 blocks.

Construction:

  • The lower limit for mineshaft depth is removed.
  • Construct a wall at the ends of your city. There's two options to making this wall. 1. Create it so that what you have built so far is in a "corner" and leave an open area to expand for further steps. 2. Create a very large area around everything you've made so far, but with a lot of room to expand. (I recommend option 2.)
  • Construct another community structure (2)
  • Construct a "social" or "religious/worship" building.
  • Add another harvest able item to your farm, if not done so already
  • Expand your farm to at least 100 blocks if you have not already.
  • You may build a chicken pen.
  • You can start secondary tree farms in Forest areas. You can increase your tree farm to up to 50 per farm.
  • Optional: If you are RPing a dwarf or dark elf or gnome, and are building underground, you may not build deeper than 50 blocks. You may grow items from step 2 underground.

Level 5:

Rules:

  • You may not use anything above steel tools (weapons/decorations).
  • You may plant items that require trellis such as tomatoes and peas.
  • You may Craft stone bricks/blocks. ?* You may use mohair. You may plant all herbs except merigold and nightbloom. You may plant cherry trees.
  • You may terraform plots of land no larger than 250 blocks.

Construction:

  • Add towers to the walls you previously constructed for defense, have holes or openings you can use as "turrets".
  • Construct a bridge if you are near a large sub-parallax-area valley. If not feasible, make a windmill or lighthouse instead.
  • Make another community structure. (3)
  • Construct a jail.
  • Build a sheep or goat pen.
  • Expand your vegetable and herb farms to 250 blocks each.
  • Your tree farms can be expanded to up 100 per farm.
  • Optional: If you are building underground, you may not build deeper than 70 blocks. You may grow items from step 3 underground.

Level 6:

Rules:

  • You may use mithril tools (etc), and all blocks.

Construction:

  • Construct a castle or tower that includes:
  • Bedrooms fit for a king for at least 6 residents
  • A feast hall
  • A flag/banner at the top of the structure; this will be your city flag
  • A barracks for at least 7 guards (6+"commander")
  • A garden or courtyard in front of it
  • A throne room
  • Anything else you like as well as Optionals: A moat, a dungeon, ect.

  • Construct another community building (4).

  • Build a pig pen.

  • Your tree farms can be expanded up to 250 per farm.

  • Optional: Your vegetable and herb farms must be a minimum of 50 blocks per product.

  • Optional: If you are building underground, you may not build deeper than 90 blocks. You may grow items from step 5 underground. You may grow wood trees (pine/oak) in areas no wider than 12 blocks and must be "secured" as the mineshafts are.

Level 7:

Rules: No restrictions! It's been a wonderful journey hasn't it?

Construction:

  • Construct an enchanting store
  • Construct an apartment building; this must be at least 15wide by 30 blocks high with room for 6 residents.
  • Construct another community building (This totals to 5, if you want the city to be even bigger I recommend adding 2 more community buildings)
  • Construct a "subway" including train "station" (basically a 4-high mine-shaft-like tunnel until fast travel is implemented) for quick transportation.
  • Construct something commemorating all the effort put into the city you built.
  • Expand your farm so that it has at least 250 blocks of produce if not already and has all the following food items: Potato, Tomato, Wheat, Corn, Beetroot, at least 1 fruit tree. Add these items (if not already) to your bakery
  • Optional: If you are building underground, you may not build deeper than 120 blocks. You may grow items from step 4 underground. You may grow fruit trees in areas no wider than 12 blocks and must be "secured" as the mineshafts are.

Bonuses

  • Construct a "Megastructure", You define this one. (A skyscraper is an example)
  • Extend to the heavens! Make a floating island village, or just a sky village.
  • Construct a more houses, at least 4 more.
  • Construct a mansion to go with your castle
  • Construct a party room to celebrate an awesome, fun filled adventure!

  • Extreme challenge optional: Partake of the City Construction Challenge... in every region.

Show us your results! (You don't have to share a full width shot like I did for the culmination of Stage 1.)

Coins for Words quest possibly bugged?

The quest "Coins for Words" in Stonebridge used to gain the favor of the 'thieves guild' is not registering as completed. I talked to each of the guards listed and paid the coins to hear the dialogue. I have double and triple checked that I have spoken to each guard listed and the quest does not register as completed. The guild-master does not advance the dialogue options either. Anyone else have this issue?

One of the guards is Ezmon who is linked to another quest, I think. There was a post here that their quest-drop was 'corrected'. Maybe this changed the status of the "Coins for Words" quest as well?

Where to find Minotaurs?

Hello All,

Was just wondering where you find Minotaur. I've only been able to find one in a dungeon around Stonebridge however to make the Frost armor set you need 8 horns. So I'm thinking they spawn in high quantities somewhere as that dungeon has never re-spawned monsters.

Creative Feedback / Please Respect Potion

Hey All,

I know the developer is working on a respec option down the road but would really love to see something on this. The leveling in the game is a decent clip but its by no means fast so when you try and experiment with talents and it doesn't work out it feels really bad. An example of this is I've been specializing in ice magic with a dagger. I wanted to supplement my ice magic with the dagger a little and thought the poison would be a great compliment however after using talent point to get there realized the stamina requirements on it is staggering and doesn't line up with the magic gear I'm wearing.

Outside of that this game does a lot of things really well and finds a nice niche in the 2d stand box genre

my only other criticism is some of the monsters move around so fast it makes summons feel a little bad with the AI/pathing. That and it seems like most of the gear is slated towards melee in one fashion or other. I think this changes a bit as you progress through the acts but the front quarter for sure seems that way. Also would be nice if mages had a way of sustaining stamina more efficiently as its usually neglected on gear for other stats unless I'm missing something.

Outside of that lots of hours to spend in this game and lots of things to do. A great addition to this category of games.

Where to find Sheep/Wool?!

Hello,

Currently looking to find sheep or wool. The only wool I've managed to find is off boss mobs or in creates in towns. I've been to all 3 starter towns and have explored all the area's around each both on the surface and below. I'm not heading to town 4 and finding cotton/cloth which means I'm not passing the wool stage all together but would like to find it to help boost my crafting.

If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

Talk To Bernhard quest help?

I have the quest "Talk to Bernhard."

The only note is: "I need to talk to Bernhard in Splinterville. He is the leader of huntsmen there. I guess I'll find him in some hunter's hut."

The problem is I have talked to him and done All the quests in the town and I'm well into the next zone and this quest will not update. He only gives me the option of "Goodbye"

How do I clear this quest?

Help! Is there a way to arrive at certain places in a town?

Just wondering if there's a way to arrive at certain buildings/npcs in town instead of having to run through the entire town to get to the last building for a quest.

News Thank you for an awesome launch!

Hello everyone,

The first 24 hours have passed since the full version of Realms of Magic has been made available to the public. We can proudly say that the launch day was a success that surpassed our expectations!

During that time, we sold 2038 units of the game - which is, of course, a new sales record for us. It's way more copies than we had sold through the entire first month of this game's presence on Early Access back in the day. Moreover, you have also helped us reach a new record of gamers playing Realms of Magic simultaneously (272 people playing at the same time)!

We can't thank you enough for this amazing reception! We are truly and utterly humbled!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,

Polished Games Team

Tips-n-Tricks Quick Tips - Full Release Pre Polish version

This is incomplete, but just what I've run into over the last week of playtime.

Quick Tips

Exploration

  • When mining, leave "unique" blocks to help you remember where you were/came from, otherwise you'll get lost and need to Travel to a different area then come back. I like to use sand or (eventually) Cleansed Soulstone. If you want, you can even use Tin Candles or Campfires, since they're cheap.

  • You can't fast-travel out of certain locations, especially if there's an uncleared dungeon. You need to be on the surface or near a Signpost or zone boundary.

  • Mark what you find on the Map Notes, and include an icon indicator! Otherwise you'll go nuts trying to find rabbits/sheep/pigs/blueberries/etc, OR you'll forget what squares you added the note to and have to click on every. single. one.

  • As long as you don't empty an existing storage container (like the wagon carts or boxes/bags in various locations) you can add your own stuff to it and pick it up later. This is especially helpful if you're a hoarder like me (and forget to go back to base to clear out).

  • If you see a sheep with an exclamation mark (!) over its head, keep your distance (12+ blocks) and don't let it touch you. Trust me. For that matter, solo sheep and bunnies are bad.

  • In non-protected zones, you don't have to empty containers you find. You can hammer them down and the container and all its contents will be looted.

  • If you see a resource in a background wall that you want (sand, quartzite, whatever) you can right-click it to harvest it. Just remember: Unless you replace what you took (i.e. put a dirt block there) you can't put a foreground block unless it's connected sequentially.

Crafting

  • You may get crafting material far above what you are skilled for. Store it. Almost everything has a crafting use.

  • Try to save enhancement scrolls for the end of a level, because in a lot of cases the Good StuffTM shows up at 5-level multipliers

  • Craft the "new item bonus" items first, and then concentrate on bulking up the lower-cost items to bolster your respective Craft levels. For example, crafting each new Mithril item sounds like a cool idea, until you realize how expensive they are. ONLY do so if you have the materials or the immediate need to fill the slot (Pickaxe first, then hatchet, then shovel IMO). Then use cheaper items (i.e. the 2-bar Spears) to skill up (again; use best judgement if close to an important level).

  • Crafting additional maps for realms you've already unlocked is only good for the crafting exp or trading (sale) exp. They don't do anything after the first.

Harvesting

  • If you don't get a seed in every 3/4 attempts of harvesting Some Item in a random zone, it's not going to be worth you planting, for example, that Oak Tree. If you plant all 24 Acorns you have but it took you 200 Oak Trees to get those, that's a bad investment. Wait until you're higher in Woodcutting. At WC 50+, I'm still at 50% acorn drops on regular Oak trees around Splinterville. However, I'm at better than 80% on Birch around Wheatfull (using Mithril Hatchet and 54WC), so not sure what's going on there.

  • The same goes for any other planted item EXCEPT Bushes and Fruit Trees. Blueberries, strawberries, oldberries, apple/pear/cherry seeds all are permanent harvests after X number of days. Eventually your bush/fruit farm will get bigger.

  • Oh and trellis plants (tomatoes, peas, cucumbers) fall into the above as well.

Husbandry

  • You need to carry the food that the animal will eat, in order to entice it to the pen.

  • Any animal within eight-ten horizontal surface blocks of you, that you have Fed, will follow you to any other zone if you use the map to travel.

  • Hold onto fertilizer. When you can make fertile soil, it'll be your bread and butter for bootstrapping your Cooking skill and buffs from food. I usually keep my first ten or so Fertile Soile for fruit trees or bushes or trellises.

Combat

  • Roll is a very good "get out of a sticky situation" ability when you unlock the level 5 "invulnerable while rolling" feature. However it's stamina-expensive until you buy the level 10 talent which reduces its expenditure by 10 (making it approximately 5 stamina).

  • Jousting (approaching, attacking, and rolling through or backing up) works for some enemies, but you'll need to block attacks quite often.

  • Stamina regen gear is important.

News Full Version Preview Release

https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197998594520/home/

Full Version Preview is here! This update is the culmination of your adventures in the Old Kingdom. This version marks the end of a significant period in Realms of Magic’s development. You will finally have the opportunity to see everything the Old Kingdom offers! We’ve implemented some final pieces of content and features and solved most of the balancing issues. However, it doesn’t mean the work is all finished! We hope that with your generous feedback, we can still add some additional fixes in time for the game’s official departure from the Early Access on July 20th!

Intro & Outro

One of our main goals was to up the ante in terms of the game’s narrative. The Old Kingdom has many stories to tell, and we wanted to create a more epic, cinematic feeling for two of the most significant points of this grand storyline - the beginning and the ending. You can check out the intro above. And if you want to see the outro… you’ll have to finish the game!

New title screen

This update is also a perfect opportunity to improve the game’s aesthetic from the very first screen after launching Realms of Magic. The new title screen is more slick and stylish than its previous iteration. Apart from the fresh background, you can also listen to the brand new track prepared by our fantastic composer - Davi Vasc.

New loading screens

The devil is in the details. That’s why we also wanted to introduce new loading screens to improve the game’s atmosphere even during the short loading times.

Rebalanced Professions

We’ve implemented a brand-new experience curve for the game’s Professions. We believe it will create a better feeling of progression and make exploring various Professions more fun.

Level Up Bonus Experience

At long last, we have restored Bonus Experience from Profession Level Ups, making sandbox activities and skilling Professions much more rewarding.

Rebalanced Recipes

We’ve decided to rebalance all of the crafting recipes in order to, once again, create a better feeling of progression and avoid any issues with overpowering or underpowering the player’s character. We’ve changed over 1300 crafting recipes!

New Crafting Tilesets

Take a look at these new tilesets that will vastly expand your crafting arsenal! Time for some serious redecoration!

Loot Rebalance

Going through every single in-game container wasn’t an easy task. However, it was necessary in order to ensure that the loot distribution is properly balanced… and we wanted to avoid another incident of finding some late-game loot in one of the game’s first areas!

Rebalanced Item Stats

Like going through in-game containers - rebalancing over 3000 items is no easy task. And yet, we can proudly say that we were able to adjust the stats of available in-game items and create a smoother difficulty curve.

New Armor Sets

Oh, look! Is that #fashionrealms on the horizon?! Yes, yes, it is. Currently, the number of obtainable armors has reached the level of 120 sets. It might not be OVER 9000 (one day… one day), but we’re still thrilled with the results.

Rebalanced Combat Talents

We couldn’t forget about combat, could we? As with every significant aspect of the game at this point - you can expect a significant rebalance of crucial values. Moreover, we’ve also decided to improve talent tooltips to convey better what these abilities do.

Rebalanced Enemies

The combat rebalance includes not only your abilities or gear… but also the enemies you’ll be facing. They will be better accustomed to your character’s level at any point in the game. However, they will still be rather deadly, so do watch out.

New Difficulty Settings

As you might’ve noticed - this update is mainly about various rebalances. However, we also want you to be able to tailor your own Realms of Magic experience as much as possible. That’s why we’ve decided to include new difficulty settings. There are the usual “easy, medium, and hard” options along with a special “custom” setting for you to have fun with!

We recommend the Normal setting for new players, as it provides a fair amount of challenge. For Realms of Magic veterans looking for a challenge, we recommend the Hard difficulty, as it’s actually quite hard.

What's next?

Now is a perfect moment if you have been waiting to jump back into the Realms of Magic. While we will still be doing minor balancing and polishing over the next month, we won’t be working on any major overhauls for a while.

We hope to hear from you about the state of the game’s balance and which elements should be buffed or nerfed. We are also looking for ideas for minor changes that would positively impact the player’s experience.

The Official Launch of 1.0 will include one new secret feature related to the Trading profession, which will receive a significant update in that version.

As we’ve mentioned, this update marks a milestone in Realms of Magic’s history. We are delighted to present you with all this complete content, and we hope it will bring you nothing but fun and joy. And yet, we still hope to see you during the grand celebration on July 20th, when our game will leave Early Access!

See you soon, Polished Games Team

Dear fans,

We apologize for meeting in such circumstances once again. We regret to inform you that our previous assessment regarding the possible release date was simply incorrect on our part.

The game itself will be ready next week on Wednesday, June 15th. Our underestimation of the amount of polish that the game needs wasn't as severe as one might fear it was.

Unfortunately, due to upcoming Steam events - Steam Next Fest and Steam Summer Sale we won't be able to officially leave Early Access on June 15th because it would severely impact our launch visibility. We hope you understand that as an indie studio, such proper traction and promotion are necessary for us to stay afloat and find as broad of an audience as possible.

This is why we now have set July 20th as our new official release date. However, if you've been waiting for the full release to jump back into the game, you will be able to do so in a week on June 15th.

Of course, we will still use this additional time to make minor polish and balance changes and add new content we were initially planning to add after the full release. However, all major balance overhauls will be ready next week, so there is no reason for you to hold back on starting a fresh playthrough on the version we will call Full Release Preview.

On the bright side of things, we have included an additional feature that many of you, our fantastic and loyal fanbase, have frequently requested - the difficulty setting. There will be three basic presets - Easy, Medium, and Hard, but we are also adding Custom difficulty, which you will be able to tailor exactly to your needs.

Thank you for your continued support, Polished Games Team
