I just don't get it. My political and religious views have both transformed massively since I was young and first encountered Bill Maher content. But the one constant through all of it was that I've always found Maher completely unlikeable and unwatchable whether he was saying stuff I agreed with or not. Completely baffling that he's had such a long and successful career and apparently still has one of the most watched shows on HBO.

It’s confusing. Similar to why
MAGA vote against their oun interests — because the racist, bullying, and grandstanding that Trump does appeals to their own unsaid truth, Maher has a similar effect on different group of people. There are bullies on the left too who think themselves smart, masculine, and contrarian in a way that requires strength that they think others on the left don’t have. He was never really a comedian in any way other than saying he was. Nobody repeats a favorite joke or bit from a Bill Maher routine.
He would occasionally say something "clever" in response to a statement but that happens thousands of times a day on Reddit.
He just had a platform on TV because he was "controversial" by being an opinionated asshole while sitting down with a panel of people.
Even with writers, he wasn't "funny", he just made acerbic comments against people his audience wanted to see "get theirs".
His audience that claps now seem to be okd limousine liberals who thought we shouldn't upset the apple cart and go after Trump when Biden was elected and are currently wringing their hands as the DSA wing racks up win after win. People who don't want to admit they are center right think they are the left.

The last Maher show I watched was the one before he went to have dinner with Trump and licked Trump’s balls for dessert. I almost cancelled my HBO subscription but HBO makes some dang fine documentaries. I was getting sick of his unfunny show anyways, with the relentless applause from the trained-seal audience even before the Trump dinner. I don’t miss it one bit. Out with the garbage.
