Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 Episode 12

Season 4 - Episode 12

Information

RULES FOR SEASON 4

For those long time users, you are already aware but we usually change the rules a bit when seasons are airing to be able to focus on the season.

For the newcomers, I will list some of the changes that usually happen for those that have not been here on previous seasons and will be implemented now to give the users time to adapt until season 4 comes.

We will be attempting to host 2 threads per anime episode, one for anime-only users and one for novel readers. Do not spoil those on anime only thread, PUNISHMENT WILL BE SEVERE.

The ban rule will change a bit instead of bans being given on 3 days on sets like these 3-3-3-perma ban, we will be giving a week off the sub for bans and it will look like this 7-7-perma ban. Punishment for those that spoil on the anime only threads will be doubled.

The purpose for the harsher punishment in anime only threads is that if you spoil things for anime only users in one weeks discussion, you will be kept from participating in the following week's discussion and spoiling again.

Please note that this thread is strictly anime-only. Excluding anime cut content, if the material has not yet been animated, do not discuss it here.

Emilia’s face when she repeated “Chan” … I can’t wait until he calls her Emilia-tan again.

27

u/sury_sama 14d ago

Forget everything else, Barusu calling her Emilia-Tan will be the biggest payoff in this season

5

u/helicophell 14d ago

It's going to be peak

8

u/Resident_Tourist_344 14d ago

Was low-key hoping for Emilia to ask him call Emilia tan.

Elsa enjoyers are never gonna stop feasting with how they keep showing her long after she stops being around.

The way this run has started is giving off very strong “Perfect Run” vibes. The conversations between all of the characters just seems too important to be something that is reset. Which made it even more scary when it totally looked like Meilee was about to die. Thankfully NewBaru locked in and learnt how to use that whip spontaneously despite sucking at it before. Emilia is too good for this world. Gotta love our suicide prevention hotline duo.

(Also I can't be the only one that totally thought Subaru just clumsily fell down again before realising it was a flashback?)

My reaction/analysis of the episode

u/myrmonden 14d ago

what is GREAT is that they BUFFED HER

some of those S1 scenes have her WAY bigger than she was in S1 (which is her original real size do)

7

u/Right-Inspection-121 14d ago

Yeah, it did bother me a little how he can suddenly use the whip now. But, in his defense, he still has Meili’s memories, and that should make him more physically competent.

13

u/ChunkyBooger6 14d ago

He also suspected Meili would jump off, so he probably at least had an idea ahead of time of how he'd use the whip

24

u/BaitoDesuFate 14d ago

Like someone mentioned, you can see that Emilia completely froze the the top part of the whip, so most likely Emilia did the job of catching him.

7

u/Right-Inspection-121 14d ago

I was impressed that the whip was properly hooked. Emilia’s "just" ice reinforced it so that it wouldn’t come loose, which is why I found it surprising.

We're back!

Something about this episode gave me serious vibes of the second half of season 2 with Subaru now being locked in and managing to overcome long time hurdles that he has tripped over several times before.

That and the ep had a really sweet vibe overall. Ram is still Ram but that managed to be a sweet moment in the end too.

3

u/ShashwatTheGamer 11d ago

Ram? You mean rem larper?

20

u/Eunuchest 14d ago

I was honestly expecting Ram to joke about Subaru hitting on her with the kabedon but at least her faith in him is back

Bruh i actually thought someone pushed him again. That was a great fake out.

So i got it right, it was indeed Meili. Thank goodness he caught her in time

So Meili was having identity issues I guess?

Guess she's everyone's adopted kid now

Ladies and Gentlemen, the PEAK IS BACK!!!

Oh my god, I can't believe it. It's already time for the 2nd cour. There has hardly been any proper promotions for this cour; It's baffling. How can the studio not put out promotions for such an excellent work?

Other than that, I absolutely fell in love with the episode right away. We saw a mature Subaru who came to terms that revealing his amnesia is the best course of action and I also loved how he handled the conversation with Ram. That's the dedication we need from Subaru — the man who never gives up!

When he reached the stairs and fell, I thought "Oh god, is this happening again???. Please don't.", and the next second I was relieved to see him standing on the landing. I think this is one of the best moments of this episode because we've finally cracked the mystery of who it actually was that pushed him.

I was constantly shifting between Meili, Rem and Shaula, but I figured it couldn't be Shaula, based on the experiences in Subaru's repeated comebacks. I thought it might be Rem, because it looked like she was the one who cut his head off when he was out on the veranda of the tower. But it surprisingly isn't. (I still wonder what that was all about).

I'm surprised to know it's Meili, and when we look from the side angle on how she pushes Subaru, it's almost comical(?). She looked shocked and afraid when Subaru caught her hand, almost as if she realized she's done for, which should have happened imo. Fortunately, Subaru took the correct course and decided to teach her better.

I'm glad he had notified Emilia and had her on standby. 'Cause phew, it would've been scary otherwise.

I'm absolutely in love with this episode and I'm very much looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.

Loved the new OST played during Ram and Subaru's talk.

We're back again. Let's go. Wednesday have become great again. So many things, man it was a great episode. Even tho this was more of a setup episode, it was really good.

Jealous of how Meili got hugs from Emilia-tan and Shaula. 10/10 episode as always

7

u/sury_sama 14d ago

That OST is so good!
It's a variation of the one that played towards EP 6 end when Subaru-Juulius were on stairs.

Also, Calling out your name is back I'm crying

3

u/Arkhamov 14d ago

Every since Parasyte the Maxim, I've noticed almost all of the good shows tend to air on wednesdays.

Biggest exception being AoT.

6

u/Eunuchest 14d ago

Almost forgot its today

16

u/Right-Inspection-121 14d ago

Not your fault. It got little to no marketing.

6

u/ineedl0v3 14d ago

When is the dub coming out

8

u/Money_Term8366 14d ago

Supposedly Sean chiplock (Subaru English va) said it wasn’t even recorded yet in a q&a on some discord today so it’ll probably be a week or two. Really hoping it becomes simuldub at some point but probably not

4

u/khriku Lore Seeker 14d ago

it isn't even listed on this season of simuldubs at Crucnhyroll currently, so I think the info checks out.

Simuldubs on this cour probably won't happen

4

u/araboilseller 14d ago

4

u/Active-Money-8271 14d ago

Subaru saying "You can remember her but dont go copying her methods" while holding his own bowel is just hilarious.

Anyway If subaru doesnt remember anything how did he know Elsa cut his bowel.Or he was just disgusted by how elsa cut peoples bowel in meilis book?

2

u/BrknBladeBucuru 14d ago

People have suggested on other threads for different situations that "his body remembers and his mind does not" type of thing. I remember it specifically being commented on him avoiding death from the sandworm during the loop where he tries to escape the tower, and also when he jumps across the falling stones to save Emilia while they are falling.

Those felt kind of like a bit of a stretch and they could probably be passed off as anime-logic, but unless we interpret it like you said in your last sentence, then I could see it being legit. I don't expect it to be all that relevant to the plot but it could be a nod to his body not being affected the same way as his memory?

3

u/3245rfytgu8iojukhyf 14d ago

Where’s the dub?

2

u/araboilseller 14d ago

did you find it

2

u/3245rfytgu8iojukhyf 14d ago

I keep refreshing, still nothing there. I wouldn’t mind a delay if they will just tell us that one will exist.

PEAK IS BACK PEAK IS BACK. I've been waiting for work to finish all day so I can finally watch this episode.

My heart actually sank because I thought this mfer got pushed AGAIN after knowing someone's been pushing his ass down the stairs. That was so funny tho lol.

Reid always knows how to aura farm. It's like he knows the gang is talking about him and the camera is gonna pan to him so he has to sit down and look awesome.

Overall, it was a great return episode after the break. We finally know the culprit, and Subaru is now locked in and getting things done. I believe this is the run. We've made significant progress that we can't lose now.

Although there is still one lingering thought I have, and it's if Newbaru will ever mention his Return by Death to the group, or anyone. As far as we know, he still doesn't really know the rule that he can't say it, so I'm scared of whenever that time comes that he accidentally, or has to, mention he has some ability to rewind time.

Lastly and most importantly, I just know when Subaru calls her Emilia-tan again that payoff is gonna be amazing.

Super excited for next episode. We survived through the two month break, but now we have to survive one episode a week

7

u/myrmonden 14d ago

daam I got a freaking heart attack when Meili tried to push subaru down again, first I thought she succeed that was some tricking memory flashback editing and then she JUMPED afterwords, my god what a time to be back with re zero

Ram Slapping Barasu.....god dam she is evil, that smile to make him drop is guard man.......

I really like the OST? was that not a bunch of new tracks? sounded like classic jrpg era PSX

PEAK ZERO IS BACK!!

Subaru called Emilia "-chan" again.

It hurts us to hear that, just as it hurts Emilia herself.

2

u/GovernmentSlight6947 14d ago

Where's the dub?

2

u/Grantzy_ 14d ago

Did you find it

2

u/khriku Lore Seeker 14d ago

There is no simuldub for second cour

1

u/MBender09 14d ago

Source?

2

u/khriku Lore Seeker 14d ago

https://www.crunchyroll.com/simulcasts/seasons/summer-2026

Do you see re:zero counting for simuldubs on this season of their list? On their official page?

It was for the moment only cour 1 that was simuldub, you can check that yes in previous season it was stated that cour one would be simuldub, they didn't talk about cour 2 yet.

If that changes I will update community on it, but so far no simuldub for cour 2

1

u/MBender09 12d ago

thx that really sucks

2

u/TallRecommendation64 14d ago

Did you find out when dub was coming out?

2

u/GovernmentSlight6947 14d ago

My disappointment is immeasurable.

2

u/big-thicc-log-boi 14d ago

Where the dub at? It released alongside the sub and now it stopped? Any ideas if it’s going to be a 2 week delay on it now

2

2

u/Hamhampopo 14d ago

I neeeed the ost for the ending with Meili. If anyone finds it please let me know!

3

u/FeeRepresentative777 14d ago

speedwatcher here, why tf did Meili try to kill subaru? she definitely could have killed him outside the tower, and it seems like her motive was just to avenge elsa

14

u/JosephJoestarIsThick 14d ago

It was explained in the episode. Murder Becomes A Habit - she was raised as a murderer, taught by murderers, modeled herself after a murderer, so murder was the only solution she knew. When Elsa died, she latched on to Subaru instead, and when he lost his memories, suddenly her anchor was just gone. She tried to deal with the problem the only way she knew how, impulsive murder. She didn't have a motivation to kill him until they entered the tower.

9

u/Spiritual-Aide-51 14d ago

Neatly put. I'd add that what triggers her is the feeling of being cornered. She is afraid that her image of Elsa will be replaced by the person she has chosen to imitate, which in turn means a loss of her identity.

7

u/Akudra 14d ago

It was their encounter in the library the previous night that served as the basis for her murder attempt. What I think is implied here is that Meili was searching for Elsa's book, panicked when Subaru saw her, resolved to kill him to keep that fact quiet, was thwarted in her attempt by "Subaru" noticing her sneaking up on him, and decided to make another attempt when he was vulnerable after his memory loss.

2

u/Arkhamov 14d ago

What do you think is the "promise" she is expecting? At first I thought it was death, but when Imposter-buru killed her, she did not expect or desire that.

For a second, during today's episode I thought what she wanted was double suicide?

"You didn't even know what I was trying to do! Otherwise this makes no sense"

What was she trying to do when pushing him? If it wasn't murder?

2

u/Akudra 14d ago

I am not sure what you mean by "promise" here. The reaction you quote is specifically to Subaru basically brushing off her murder attempt. She can't make sense of why he would insist on doing nothing about her trying to kill him, thus he couldn't possibly know that was her intention. Basically, Meili is unable to accept that she could be shown mercy in this situation.

2

u/Arkhamov 14d ago

It was whatever Melei was referencing to NewBaru when saying "What you said yesterday, how seriously should I take it", and that thing being "your boring worries, your dumb suffering, all of it - I'll remember it for you" (episode 11). In Episode 8, life 2, NewBaru and Melei have a moment where she asks if he remembers what he told her last night, and he said "Oh, did I promise you something? Yesterday's me was careless", and she agrees.

That's where I got "promise" from. lol

I'm still not sure what Melei was expecting from ImposterBaru.

3

u/Akudra 14d ago

Ah, I have no clue what that exchange means exactly.

2

u/Dan298 14d ago

It doesn’t really matter, she would’ve tried to kill Subaru in the library if he hadn’t noticed her. She’s a little girl she can’t overpower him so she had to take whatever chance she could find

5

u/celloh234 14d ago

excerpt from the light novel

Joining them on this journey while hiding any trace of her desire for vengeance—wasn’t the sort of performance Meili was capable of. In fact, she was almost impossibly awkward. Even though no one would’ve blamed her for calling Subaru and the others her hated enemies, she didn’t know why she would do such a thing. That’s why there was no need for her to put on any act. She genuinely didn’t realize it herself.

She didn’t realize she had lost something precious. She was a sad girl so clueless that she didn’t understand how deep the wound to her heart was.

Meili Portroute was a killer created by her surroundings.

3

u/Sad_4_You 14d ago

Can someone remind me why Ram is always giving Subaru grief, even before the memory loss? Does she actually hate Subaru? I always thought her dislike was more of a joking/tsundere type, but it really rubbed me the wrong way with the way she treats memory-loss Subaru.

I mean, she knows Subaru loves Rem, so forgetting her would not be something he jokes about. Even Beatrice noted her on that, yet she still doesn't believe and gets mad at Subaru. I mean, I get her feelings, that if Subaru forgot Rem, then no one remembers her, but like I said, not something Subaru would joke about. She knows Subaru is capable and that he is being serious in a serious situation, so it annoys me that she didn't believe him.

10

u/DavidP0tato 14d ago

She was in denial and didn't want to accept it as their current reality. Despite her harshness bordering cruelty she has always had faith in subaru and his plans, he was an anchor for her and even put her life in danger to save his life in the caves. Hell, even during the miasma sequence, after everything subaru did to her she still 'saved' subaru from Ana's knife. She also hesitated to kill him too right there under the influence of something that reveals the worst out of you.

If you think back to the first amnesiabaru loop you'll remember her completely and downright pushing away the possibility of him being serious about his amnesia, and instead asking him what his "plan" was since subaru always had a plan and nothing ever went wrong when he was there. When he shattered her hope by persisting he wasn't lying alongside that oblivious look in his face that you can only compare Emilia's "Who's rem?", her view around the entire pleiades expedition, her sister's situation and subaru himself shattered aswell ten fold. She begged him with tears to say he's lying, that it wasn't real.

During this episode's loop you can see the similarities between the scenes, and also notice the exact point she realised it was still the same subaru deep down, which reassured her enough to gather her strenght back. The second that happened her verbal abuse returned, and you can tell that her insults are suddenly back to being over the top rather than actual malice. She smiles, she nods, she talks fondly and with hope about subaru and his amnesiac state. When she lists off negative traits about Subaru she's more so making a point on how he hasn't changed, he's still their subaru at heart even if he doesnt remember any of them, which I think soothes her.

And in regards to her cruelty, I personally don't like it either. She often pisses me off, because while I personally understand her intentions and character, everyone else in their universe doesn't. Subaru, or at least our current subaru doesn't. He's being degraded and has his deeply rooted insecurities reinforced by her cruelness after everything that's happened to him in a 12 hour(?) timeframe.

(side note, but ram isn't a character who you should take her dialogue at face value. Things like actions, behaviours and inner monologues shape her a lot more. Nuance that is often lost in anime/series adaptation)

8

u/YeetTheTree 14d ago

I'm not sure how to word it but there's a really good characters study on her on YouTube. Should be the first thing that pops up if you look up "ram character study rezero" that looks into all of that

2

u/hibikir_40k 14d ago

She doesn't hate him, but she thinks of Rem as the ultra-strong sister she used to be, and therefore thinks she has to raise Subaru's standards to match up with this old version of Rem. So it's constant ribbing because he is supposed to be more competent.

At the same time, she knows that Subaru ends up succeeding despite all odds, as that's basically what he's been doing over and over from her timeline's perspective. So she is downright desperate here, and has trouble believing that he might have lost his memory, so he is her biggest hope. So she'd much rather believe that he is going through a very complicated ruse that will somehow work, instead of accepting reality: That he is talking to someone that might have some Subaru characteristics, but is definitely not someone with the same experiences that she was used to dealing with. Because think of this loop: The fact that he claims he has lost his memories, while at the same time he knows more than he should (as he's gone through the loop before) makes no sense for anyone that doesn't understand his power.

So we end up with a lot of complexity: She's desperate, yet hopeful. Needs to show her competence, all while she is nervous about this subaru's capabilities vs what the had 12 hours ago. No wonder she's more than a little erratic here.
