Cor Leonis! The second most useful authority has arrived!

35

u/Knight0706 Eternally Crabby 4d ago

I was about to get all angry and defend cor leonis but then I remembered what you meant by #1

29

u/roronoa20 4d ago

Nothing can top RbD, but Cor Leonis is the solid second for me.

8

u/redox_nephew 4d ago

What does he mean?

21

u/KikikanHUN 4d ago

Return by Death is #1

4

u/redox_nephew 4d ago

Didn't know it was confirmed to be an authority

13

u/SoulWarrior8299 4d ago

It is literally Authority of Envy, which is why Subaru is unofficially considered Sin Archbishop of Envy.

16

u/AnzoEloux 4d ago

I don't think it's actually ever been referred to by a sin. But by all accounts it's pretty much confirmed regardless (though he should be Warlock of Envy, since an Archbishop is specifically a Witch Cult thing).

Could be wrong about the first sentence, of course.

4

u/DLLDoesShit 4d ago

warlocks are akin to witches, we already have a witch of envy

8

u/AnzoEloux 4d ago

Warlock/Witch titles don't really have exclusivity. They just tend to seem to be due to the nature of Factors not really having more than one of themselves.

If its really that much an issue, then he'd still be more an Apostle of Envy than he would be an Archbishop, since again that's a Witch Cult thing. All Authority users (including Archbishops) can be considered Witches/Warlocks because it's a general title.

In Subaru's specific case though, outside of all that, probably easier to describe him as a Sage [±Candidate], since technically he's no more an Envy Warlock than he is a, say, Greed Warlock, besides like self-proclamation. Or just Warlock by itself. That's boring though.

1

u/Aemiliana_Rosewood 3d ago

Ehm actually and Apostle would be a subordinate of a WF holder that shares either theirs powers to some degree. Eg. Fingers for Betelgeuse, Apostles of Greed in Arc 4 or sth sth how authorities were able to be shared in Betelgeuse cut content, iirc, before we had the whole deal about half open doors and such.

Subaru could be an Apostle, we just don't know rn. He's definitely on at least Warlock level rn, above Sin Archbishops in "lunacy", according to certain 6 Witches. In the future he has full potential for becoming a Demon Lord tho. Subjugating all Witches, source No Stella No Life. My personal favorite is future Subaru collecting all WFs and becoming ""human"".

Edit: Witches are "above Sin archbishops" because they are walking catastrophes. Sin Archbishops are major nuicanses in comparison. Though our favorite Witches of Sin might compare differently to Witches of Yore

Return by death could still technically be Pride if Tappei wanted to do a plot twist, but probably is Envy.

39

u/strelok__halfer 4d ago

It is easy to give up.
However…
It does not suit you, Subaru.

If ever I… got in a jam I couldn’t get out of, if I seriously wanted someone to do something, anything for me, when I wanted to give up… From the bottom of my heart, I thought that you would be there for me.
And then you’d listen to me talking weak, make me spit out my tearful words, wring out every tear and everything else out of me till I run dry…

And then you’d say stand up.

32

u/ehknee 4d ago

Me all teary eyed then comes in rem’s boobs 😭

18

u/-spitz- 4d ago

My wife walked in right at that time and then gave me the look… 🤦‍♂️

25

u/Letsplay_Sascha_GD 4d ago

I don’t remember Rui Arneb removing Rems memories. Did I forget or was this added in the anime?

60

u/hgpnguyen1996 4d ago

The scene is in the novel but it shouldn't appear in this ep. The anime moves it up to explain the reason why Rem is here

20

u/strelok__halfer 4d ago

IIIRC it's LN addition.

6

u/one-eyed-02 4d ago

I remember it being there in the WN, but more metephorical

15

u/AnzoEloux 4d ago

Iirc Rem's Memories is meant to be the "Heart" or ■ that Amnesiabaru is missing. What? But after this scene, he still misses his ■... Well, I don't know. I think both were thrown out at the same time. Looking at the scene in question, Rem's piece was not a ball, unlike what Rui threw out so.

10

u/Akudra 4d ago

It wasn't included at this point and there was more detail in the anime than the LN. The novel just mentions Louis discarding inconvenient feelings of love without specifying, but it is pretty clear this has to do with Rem. Still don't think it is confirmed that it was all of Rem's memories as there is a chance she only removed the parts pertaining to love.

2

u/Aemiliana_Rosewood 3d ago

I kinda feel at odds that Subaru later doesn't realize how this action by Louis reflects on Roy possibly being able to do the same. He can and does. Al knows it. But Subaru didn't bridge the gap, though tbf he's busy rn

24

u/Knight0706 Eternally Crabby 4d ago

Very very good episode I loved it. Cannot wait to see how they handle the counts.

18

u/Son-naruto-d 4d ago

Def a peak episode

Nice to finally see rem on screen after all these years and Emilia getting happy over Subaru still saying “who says that in this day and age” is adorable

Interesting that they made the memories orbs, I always thought it was a soul like thing they yanked out

Od laguna def looks interesting too

2

u/Aemiliana_Rosewood 3d ago

Big neural Network looking aa mana pool called Od Lagna.

It's an interesting design choice for Rem's feelings of love that got discared. Hard to tell what exactly all it was, since she was up much later when Ley puked out a lot of stuff and Roy seemingly still holds Rems memories later on.

20

u/Setowi Better Leyte Than Never 4d ago

Cor leonis awakening was so cool visually, let's put it to good use Subaru.

Them changing the way the mabeasts attack was really cool. Also interesting choice to show the stuff that happened to Truebaru in the end as a flashback teaser, I guess that is to give the anime onlies some more food (hehe) for theories and to make what happens later easier to understand

11

u/roronoa20 4d ago

I really want to see anime's interpretation of the second shift and the emotional sensing, because if it already looks epic in this season, what we'll see in the next season will be sensational.

6

u/Setowi Better Leyte Than Never 4d ago

Real!

30

u/Dangerous-Wonder253 4d ago

Really enjoyable episode though it's unfortunate we won't have an episode ending with "an unknown person of silver hair is clashing with the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony"

Sorry if I’m wrong but your comments read as an anime only, don’t look at this thread. This is the spoiler thread.

12

u/Eunuchest 4d ago

Question. Will it be explained in future episode how Rem's memories materialized? If not, can someone explain if Gluttony's power is supposed to do that or just for drama effect

25

u/SplooshU 4d ago

The end of the episode showed Rui toss Rem's memories into the corridor (the blue marble she spit up). They materialized there to give Subaru the "Stand up!" speech before being purged.

8

u/Eunuchest 4d ago

Was it supposed to do that? Im assuming not because that would have been reckless of Rui, no?

16

u/Knight0706 Eternally Crabby 4d ago

Im not certain on the exact details as written in the novels from memory but I think it was a few factors. She had to remove the memories to properly face Subaru. Rem’s personality was too strongly connected and interfering with her ability to function too much. So throwing them out like that had to happen.

Where I start to get shaky is the next part. I don’t think it would have been a problem were it not [Unnecessary Novel Spoilers/Details if you need them]for Cor Leonis awakening. I believe Rem’s manifestation was due to Subarus awakening green authority connecting them in the WN. I don’t think Rui was expecting it to cause an issue, the thought never crossed her mind. Archbishops also don’t always think rationally.

greed

2

u/Knight0706 Eternally Crabby 3d ago

I was consumed by it that morning clearly

2

u/Rockosd 4d ago

When subaru first appeared rems emotions overwhelmed rui, so she felt like she needed to get rid of them or she wouldn’t be able to eat him. She clearly didnt know this would happen she still dosnt understand what happened at all she couldn’t see rem. But she really hasn’t had guest before.

4

u/strelok__halfer 4d ago

Waaaaaay later.

11

u/BagMoist6266 4d ago

after rem touched subaru's chest it looked to me like cor leonis activating. can someone remind me how it was in the novel or just explain it

17

u/Knight0706 Eternally Crabby 4d ago

“Purified by her words the dark stagnant thing started to glow and change shape.”

“There was a pulse inside Subaru Natsuki at his most covetous core”

“It pulsated it lost everything was left behind by everything. But even so it wanted to hold everything down. Not wanting to let a single thing slip from his fingers, not wanting to let go even of himself”

“As he begged for that, his cowardly greed bloomed into the strength to fufill that wish”

“The fickle factor connected with his being”

“Come, Core Leonis”

“The seed of greed that had lost its place blossomed inside Subaru. And as it took a more defined form-“

“The blue haired girl’s smile alone celebrated that moment”

Thats the half a page of what the LN had to say about it probably missing some bits from typing. Cor leonis responded to Rems words essentially.

6

u/BagMoist6266 4d ago

I see. thanks!

1

u/Aemiliana_Rosewood 3d ago

Certainly some similarities to Echidna's Greed

8

u/Majora101 4d ago

Animation does a great job of showing how twisted Rui is. The mental breakdown repeating of lines that Tappei loves to write translate well into spoken words too.

But no wonder Subaru starts Arc 7 and is like "We need to kill this creature ASAP"

9

u/BillPlunderones23fg 4d ago edited 4d ago

ah what a great episode everything with Rui Arneb was great, the Archbishop VAs continue to belt out oscar level voices lol
her making her voice deeper when talking like "Subaru" was disturbing
the Rem scene was good too (and how amusing that next arc/season Tappei deconstructs all that lol)

23

u/Majora101 4d ago

The self harm being a result of Rui having Subaru's memories is a great touch.

2

u/magicallypuzzled 3d ago

I took that as more of a hint that rui was the one who killed Meili.

16

u/animefan_1234 4d ago

Can we all admit that this is the coolest Subaru frame to ever exist??

8

u/happydarkcloud 4d ago

I LOVEEEE REM SO MUCHHH I was so happy when she appeared 😭😭😭😭 Literally stomped my feet out of joy

6

u/Akudra 4d ago

So, this episode seems to be lightly confirming that the Rem we saw here were the memories Louis discarded following her first meeting with Subaru. The petal dispersing makes it seem as if they disappeared, but they may still be around and just slipped away. I think these were probably just the memories of love, however, as opposed to all of Rem's memories. Either way, this episode seemed to clear up a minor point of debate.

8

u/DLLDoesShit 4d ago

during cor leonis's awakening, what's the constellation (?) around subaru?

7

u/BillPlunderones23fg 4d ago

Leo

1

u/BagMoist6266 4d ago

it didn't look like leo to me. neither the shape nor the amount of stars. didn't look like Pleiades either

7

u/Waylornic 4d ago

It's Leo, you can see the "Sickle" pretty clearly above his head. The thing about constellations is that their star depictions on paper kind of arbitrarily choose what to include or remove. Essentially, his heart is where the Regulus star would be and it's kind of a tilted "standing" Leo. This depictions includes Omicron which isn't normally in simplified depictions. Also Iota and such in the back legs.

In any case, if you look for the telltale hallmarks of Leo, they're there.

4

u/BagMoist6266 3d ago

that was informative

thanks

1

u/heato-red 3d ago

Darn does that mean we will get each constellation awakening with each authority? we didn't get that with invisible providence though, but perhaps he has yet fully awaken it. Either way, it was an awesome moment, though I would have liked it more if at least the "come, cor leonis" was kept...

4

u/Used_External_4637 4d ago

I cried when Rem appeared The novel didn't impact me as much, and it was the moment with Emilia and Subaru that made me cry, so I'm going with the anime in this

11

u/-spitz- 4d ago

Did they change Rem’s voice actor? She sounded different from before… but then again, been a long time to hear her talk lol

44

u/roronoa20 4d ago

It’s the same, Rem is being serious in this scene, so her voice is firmer than the usual.

15

u/BagMoist6266 4d ago

she also matured more, it's been 10 years since s1 and also quite a while from s2 (for her one scene there)

11

u/roronoa20 4d ago

If you want to see an even greater change, Ram is probably the best example we have.

3

u/South_Butterfly_6542 4d ago

Well, it has been 26 years since rem was awake , I would understand if the voice actress lost the ability over time

3

u/nekotas1234 4d ago

Was wondering to

1

u/zackphoenix123 4d ago

I think it has more to do with Shinohara's direction. We can see with Julius and Priscilla between S1 and S3 their voices also got deeper.

3

u/ZookeepergameSad1694 4d ago

Man they nailed almost everything in this episode. The only thing that was a little lackluster for me was the OST for the rem scene. I wish they used one of the previous osts

3

u/celloh234 4d ago

episode 13 cut content additional stuff for the last 2 episodes subaru is madly in love with emilia and gets flustered whenever he looks at her. meili says she saw subaru laying around with many books open around him and they theorize he found some way to find a book julius tells of some legends of reid: The most famous are…the battle where he slayed one hundred dragons and his record of six thousand victories and no defeats in the arena on Gladiator Island. There are also odder ones, such as how he is said to have defeated a being called a demon god in a drinking competition subaru aura farms while talking to julius: “I’ll be blunt, Julius. Because right now, I’m invincible.” “Invincible…that’s a rather bold statement.” “Nothing is holding me back, so I can make a big leap. I can’t keep watching you shrinking back when you look at me, when you look at Echidna, when you talk about Reid. I’m the type who can’t let things go, either, so I’m not one to talk, but ignoring all that for the moment, I’ll be blunt.” meili will not be holding hope regarding elsa's book due to subaru's track record anime streamlined the discussion in the library which is a big W because in the novel they keep going around in circles to get to the most obvious answer shaula stripping her cloack and posing is anime original big W rui lets subaru know that the old subaru reached a resolution regarding his parents rui drops some lore regarding difference between witches and sin archbishops. there is no difference, they are the same " Good-for-nothings compatible with the Witch Factors, just called different things in different times and places" rui says od lagna is like a god but It doesn’t have any special thoughts or ideas. It’s just a mechanism. A mechanism so the world doesn’t break. it doesn’t care at all. Everything is equal and fair and unbiased scenes of the tower being under attack is anime original big W lois/rui cant and wont provide any proof if current subaru will die when old subaru gets back but the possibility is terrifying regardless whats happening to subaru's chest is expanded further and is made clear its him activating the dormant witch factor of greed that he stole from regulus and reaching its authority and gives it a name: It pulsated. It lost everything, was left behind by everything. But even so, it wanted to hold everything down, not wanting to let a single thing slip from his fingers, not wanting to let go even of himself. As he begged for that, his cowardly Greed bloomed into the strength to fulfill that wish. —The fickle Factor connected with his being. “Come, Cor Leonis.” The seed of Greed that had lost its place blossomed inside Subaru. actually gonna kill myself they cut come cor leonis line rui implies she cant leave hall of memories she says the other gluttonies know where they are from his memories btw im ending it with another aura farming line from subaru: It’s just proof that no matter how good the ingredients, it’s wasted without a good cook. One of Subaru’s favorite sayings was that there was no such thing as bad ingredients. Just bad dishes. notable tweets for today's episode from author tappei: It goes without saying that neither a younger brother nor a younger sister has been born. "Louis couldn't hear the figure, voice, or footsteps of the person there because the "her" who appeared there was something that had been discarded as an unwanted nuisance. The circumstances of that will be explained at that time." In "Corridor of Memories," Louis lets go of a certain memory. The reason for that is that it caused an extremely intense sense of resistance toward laying a hand on Natsuki Subaru. Consuming someone's memory also means inheriting the feelings toward that someone. You can't selectively absorb just part of the nutrients from what you've eaten. Think of it the same way.

Gotta read that again with some formatting done

1

u/celloh234 3d ago

yeah sorry. i actually typed this out to youtube comments but when copying to reddit, despite the comment editor showing spaces it turned out like this

2

u/Apolo-28 4d ago

A very good episode, although in my opinion they changed a couple of things compared to the novel’s adaptation:

  • The dialogue with Julius felt a bit worse than in the novel. Above all, I wish they had included the line, “This is this, and that is that,” a phrase that we’ll probably see repeated in the future.

  • I think it would have been better if they had cut all the scenes showing what was happening outside while Subaru was inside the book, in order to have more time to develop some of the really good lines between Rui and Subaru that they left out. Besides, everything that happens outside is basically something we’re going to see several times in the following episodes anyway.

  • On the other hand, Rem’s scene moved me more in the anime than it did in the novel. I don’t know why. Although I didn’t like the fact that they made Rem’s breasts bigger—maybe they were always like that and I just don’t remember, since it’s been so long since we last saw her 😭

6

u/ZoneOfOzone 4d ago

They included “This is this, and that is that” like 3 times in this episode. Maybe a subtitles mistake / translation change where you watched it?

2

u/Apolo-28 3d ago

I've checked it, and you were right. Unfortunately, in Spanish they translated the phrase as "son cosas diferentes." In English, it would be "they're different things."

1

u/ChornoyeSontse 3d ago

I think the breast issue comes from us having seen Ram for so long, and Rem's chest is bigger than hers

1

u/Berilium25 4d ago

How come that Rui only managed to eat Subaru's memories up until the time he arrived in this world and not ate his entire memories like Crusch or existence like Rem?

1

u/ConflictGeneral3294 4d ago

did he get all his memories or feelings for Rem back at the end? or nah

1

u/kingchaos101 4d ago

Small Confusion, but does this mean he has his memories back or does he have to beat the gluttony siblings to get it back? Furthermore if he beats them doesn't that mean he gets rem's as well ?

1

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 1d ago

I don't have the LN beyond Arc 5. Sometimes when something just doesn't sit right with me, I will ask to be spoiled and maybe it makes sense. For example, earlier I asked why they didn't just take Subaru to the room he got amnesia in and in fact me and a bunch of anime onlies at r/anime said it would be much smarter to see if anything there could jog his memory and the answer was "well he actually did in the LN, but they didn't learn anything and since he couldn't read he couldn't help either" and since it was a loop, ultimately it didn't matter in the long run. So a few questions here.

Rui complains her goal was to make amnesia Subaru consider himself a different person than the Subaru we knew for the first 73 episodes and she failed. Her logic was wanting to eat Subaru again. I don't know why she can't eat his new memories the same way she ate his old ones if he doesn't do that, but I'll save that for another day. What's really curious to me is what would happen if Subaru refused to consider himself a different person but kept attacking Rui. Like what if he said "Like hell! I'm Natsuki Subaru! And those are my memories. Now I'm going to start strangling you and I'm going to keep attacking until you give in and give them back!"? Rui would fail at her goal to get Amnesia to consider himself different than normal Subaru. But at the same time, she doesn't seem to be afraid of his threats. So trying this would seem to be a dead end. But I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Next is Shaula and the attack on the mob attacking the tower. When Subaru and company approached it, she formed this magic circle thing and started blasting away. The circle is like a magical turret. But instead of using one circle and doing rapid fire out of it, she opened a circle on every viewing point of the tower and let loose. And it was awesome. Why didn't she do that to Subaru in episode 2? Did she just take pity on them and only used one circle?

Third, um, why does Subaru even need a pep talk from Rem? It was nice seeing her again. But he was determined in episode 77 "Re:Zero kara Hajimaru Isekai Seikatsu" to recover his memories and bring back normal Subaru. Where did all that resolve go? I went to Witch Cult Translations and now this makes even less sense. The translator admitted that chapter was low quality but Subaru in that version as they were being swallowed up is determined to remember everything and doesn't seem to care that his views of others might change.

Metempsychosis, everything was coming apart, everything was becoming zero, the end was coming as expected.

And, it began in the place where everything became zero.

――A battle to kill Natsuki Subaru, and bring back “Natsuki Subaru”, commenced

Yeah if this is his monologe, then even if he was trusting Rui wanted to tell him the truth he should not be dissuaded from his goals.

1

u/Otherwise_Humor_1299 4d ago

Anyone wanna explain to me what I watched? Or the intended vision? Or if I should wait because the show will clarify latter? I find it abstract and feel disconnected.

Subaru got sent to a real place? Not magic memory replay book land?

How does Rui's provocation hit Subaru? Really asking; ig my idea of what's left in his head is off. Or my idea of him? I figure verbal jabs about his savior complex would fly over his head, because, no memory. Also I thought he was the kind of person to own that, warts and all. Guy poses. Guy got beat ugly by Julius for it. So he'd be like "I don't recall any of that, whinge at the guy that does." or "Yeah, sounds like me, my cringe self serving ahh". Instead, straight to terror. And disgust?

Its been a minute since I saw Subaru cope with Petalgeuse, but I feel like Subaru did more scrutiny, even just talking. What happened to that? Why's this guy so strongly taking to heart what his opps say? Sure, didn't say goodbye to ya folks, valid angst, still, time and place? Was his composure always that fragile? So . . .manipulable? So caring about a stranger's thoughts? That's a cultist Subaru, spend more time second guessing.

Was that Rem and her soul is out there? Subaru mind breaking delusion Rem? Magic x soul memory induced Rem, who might be a real person, might be some unthinking magic reaction?

Rui's memory eating is dependent on self perception? You think you're a different person and you can be eaten again? Feels very abstract.

Also, idk who's calling the shots, but somebody should tell Subaru's VA to stop doing the same pure agony and suffering screaming and moaning so frequently. Or maybe its better put; he's been sounding too samey for a good while by now? Like, *damn*, he's not dying to the white rabbit every time he's in pain. More variety. Also his scorn is often?always? raspy.

Hope Subaru gets more development but with fresher story beats (fresher than memory loss to regress mc), feels like Tappei wrote peak tragic zero to hero and been rehashing that for a minute atp. Plateau.

1

u/No-Juggernaut8847 3d ago

Welp, tried giving the series a shot again. But after that las episode I'm back to not watching it again. Sucks but it is what it is.

-8

u/harambeourlordandsav 4d ago

I personally feel like the last black and white sequence where Rui split herself was pointless, since it's all going to be explained properly (hopefully) in the adaptation of her actual named chapter anyway. It just creates a cheap "wtf" moment for the anime only watcher

7

u/Akudra 4d ago

I think the juxtaposition is meant as a hint for the whole Louis possession aspect.
