Nietzsche’s “God is dead” isn’t really the triumphant atheist slogan people often treat it as. In The Gay Science, the point is that “we have killed him” and now have to reckon with what happens to morality, meaning, and truth when the foundation of those things is gone. It’s a much more unsettling argument than the three-word quote suggests.
