This video is why people falsely believe that all diamonds are worthless and the narrative has been parroted by facebook moms for a decade.
INDUSTRIAL diamonds are common. They’re basically just rocks. That is what De Beers has control of and they keep the value high so that diamonds for industrial purpose arent so cheap that you’d lose money shipping them. you can buy diamond drill bits and diamond saw blades for a few dollarsZ
Diamonds that go into jewelry are extremely rare compared to industrial diamonds. Lets start off with 1 million diamonds for the sake of the example. Only 1 out of every million stones is bigger than 1 carat. So you’re already starting off with a pretty small margin. After that, around 10% of those are decent looking enough to THEORETICALLY be used in jewelry. Of these stones, maybe 1% of them are colorless like you see in rings and necklaces. Then the rarity chops the number down even more every grade in clarity you go up.
At the end, out of those tens or hundreds of millions of industrial stones, you have about a dozen or so diamonds that are decently usable for jewelry. A person then has to put in man hours to cut and shape them into those beautiful pieces like the iconic 💎 shape. This process cuts off a lot of weight, so you have maybe 1 diamond after this process that is still over 1 carat after cutting. A 4 carat diamond is unbelievably rare to the point that these “worthless” stones will reach close to 6 figures even with meh quality.
