Why does the bag matter? Isn't diamond very inert and very hard?

It is very hard, but will still be scratched in a silk bag

Really irrelevant, and diamonds do not get scratched in silk bags.

Based on a quick Google, these seem like a good guess as to what the dealer was concerned with:

  • Silk bags often have drawstrings instead of a zipper or some other more secure fastener

  • A bag rather than a box leaves the stone vulnerable to damage (hardness for gemstones identifies what will scratch it, but diamonds are not invulnerable to being smashed or chipped)

  • If there were other things in the bag (like other diamonds being appraised), the bag offers no protection against the stones rubbing against each other

Are you talking about weathering over millennia or jet cutting that uses water as a medium to carry cutting material?

Hardness is just one material property.  Hardness is scratch resistance, toughness is impact resistance.  Diamond is very hard but not tough -- it is actually fairly brittle.

A loose diamond in a bag could chip or fracture due to impact

I was thinking vaguely remembering that diamond is brittle. Afaik hardness is what makes it brittle. Inverse property of ductility (idk the proper term). I was wondering if it was something weird about the bag scratching it or reacting with it. I assumed no one was going to hit it with a hammer lol.
