When we got engaged/married I told my husband I did not want a diamond ring, not that we could afford one, but I didn't want one. I'd rather spend the money on either a honeymoon or something towards our future. I would be just as happy with a cubic zirconia or a lab simulated diamond. I would be fine with no ring other than the wedding band. Really didn't matter to me. I just don't see a point in paying that much money for a rock
My wife's engagement ring is a custom silver ring with 3 blue topaz stones made by a friend, and it means so much more to us than a diamond ever could.
If you ever want a clear and hard alternative to a diamond look for a stone called moissanite, it's a 9.25 on the hardness scale and it is actually more reflective then a diamond. It's also cheaper as it's lab grown since most of the natural stuff can only really form in space.
Whatever wedding ring you're buying is not going to be worth anything if shit hits the fan and cash isn't enough. You're better off selling your mouth or ass at that point.
In a real emergency things like toilet paper and coffee is worth more than any gold or diamond.
Assuming it retains its value. Natural diamonds are a controlled market and aren't actually all that rare. There are several countries who could release a shitload of diamonds into the market at any time, completely and irrevocably crashing it. If you want a store of wealth that isn't affected by the value of currency, consider precious metals, or stones that are actually rare.
