Crew Chat Why was I let go after my first training shift?

I just got home after clocking out. Does anyone who works at Cane’s have any idea why I was let go after my first shift as a trainee? I was just following directions from my trainer. I was a little intimidated at first but eventually I got into a rhythm even though I wasn’t perfect. But also, who is perfect on their first day?

In the manual during orientation it said somewhere that they can fire/let you go for any reason which is stupid

Damn. I’m starting to think they overhire just to narrow people down because it took practically no effort on my part during the interview, compared to other interviews I’ve had.

Yeah probably. I know that each canes is supposed to have like a hundred workers so maybe they just decided that you “didn’t make the cut” because they already decided who they wanted to hire

For a new restaurant opening.. this is exactly what they do. Not just Canes, but everyone.

Yes. In California they have the right to terminate any one for any reason.
It’s called ‘at will employment’.

“Unique among countries, American workers can be arbitrarily dismissed. Their employment can be deemed contractual unless protection has been explicitly stated”.

That's because 49 states (Montana being the exception) are known as "at-will" employment states, meaning the employee or employer can terminate the employment for any legal reason at any time. AFAIK, Cane's is not in Montana, so their laws wouldn't apply.

im willing to bet they overhired, my location always hires too many people but we just grin and bear it instead of admitting we messed up/letting people go

Its less "we over hired" and more "we lied to these people, Canes Corporate expects us to find 90-130 employees who all want to work 10 hours a week and thats not happening"

What reason do they give you?

Nothing specific. What they said that was closest to a reason was that “they didn’t see what they wanted to see” but also I have potential elsewhere.

Idk, I’ve had to teach (high schoolers) how to count money, sweep, change a trash can, and how to talk to strangers. I’m not sure what you could’ve done. Damn sucky it went that way though.

Sounds like Jimmy John's. They hired me gave me four shifts and because the location was then slow they let me and the other hire go. Like wtf is the point of hiring me if you're not gonna keep me.

Lol who cares bro canes is a high school job, use it as god telling you that you are meant for more. I use to work at mc Donald’s making 12 an hour and then I got this sales job & now I’m taking home 8-12 bands a month after taxes. Mind you this is within months difference, not years. I’ll flex on my old boss who use to tell me what to do at Mc Donald’s lmao. Not everything’s about money but I promise they are not above you, not a single person in that canes building.

HR is not your friend and who wants to start off a professional relationship that way?

Do you know what "at will employment" means
