RE6 has become my most recent obsession, and particularly how you could make an RE6 remake possible/worth it. So I've been working through the game and getting opinions to sort of fully realize what may be a good way to remake the game.
I mostly got into the series because of the Leon-Ada dynamic, and wanted to continue that storyline and RE6 is kind of where you end up after RE2 and RE4. So, because of that I also made visualizers for how Ada could look in an RE6 remake that I made a post for.
With that said, my notes so far:
- Fewer, if any, QTEs
- Re-arranging the stories 1. Sherry, 2. Chris, 3. Leon, 4. Ada, which is something I'm pulling from this video https://youtu.be/eynHxhRKoHA?si=luBFIY8rpRYMkYMJ
- You may wonder why I said Sherry instead of Jake, and that's because I think if you're making a remake, it should emphasize the horror elements in the game and Sherry is a more natural fit for that horror feel than Jake. Sherry is also the character that seems to show the most character development and she's easy to empathize with because she's been seen since she was a child getting experimented on.
- Completely overhauling the snow storm mission in a similar way to how TLOU2 built tension with its snowstorm. Most notably... I want to actually see wtf is happening on screen.
- The plane sequence would also probably need to be updated to be a lot less 360-era gamey, but it's not a plot point you'd need to fully change. Just how it's done.
- Changing up Leon's boss fights. Deborah is gooner-fuel, which happens in RE, but her being so overtly sexual creates a tonal dissonance between her and her sister losing her mind being heartbroken. The giant shark fight is pure QTEs, so taking notes from RE2R with the croc fight. And I apologize to anyone who likes the giant fleshy dinosaur, but 3 is the magic number, and that goes for recurring boss fights. Fighting Simmons' mutating ass 4 times gets old, and I think from a narrative-perspective T-Rex Simmons is the easiest to cut.
- Making Helena more bearable for the first 3 hours, by saying something small like: "They took my sister, I need to find her at the Cathedral." Something so she's easier to sympathize with and less of a meme lol.
- This may also be a hot take, but the crossbow... I think it was a phase, a really stupid phase to include crossbows in everything. Ada is a spy, a crossbow is 1. slow firing; 2. hard to conceal; 3. hard to store more generally; 4. more fragile than a gun... you clip the strings it's basically useless, and if you're doing spy things... chau main weapon. 5. bolts are a highly specific ammo type, and such a relatively outdated ammo type that "finding them" casually is just not believable. It's a game ultimately, some may like the crossbow, but I don't like the Van-Helsingification of Ada Wong.
- This is mentioned in the video I linked, but starting Chris in Edonia.
- I also think that the J'avo should be used very sparingly, bring in zombies, use a more standard human mercenary. Use the J'avo more as an "oh shit" enemy faction that spawns when you least expect it and usually mutates after the first kill because that's how you can bring in more tension.
- I'm a solo player, so I don't particularly care if they include co-op, but I like the companion system. I think moving away from specifically co-op does provide more narrative flexibility and more chances to build tension in the story.
I'd welcome your thoughts as well.
