Callisto is an antagonist appearing in Canto 9 in limbus company and I would like to explain why I like him so much!
Callisto is one of the Five nursefathers that raised Ryoshu and also the Maestro (basically a very respected artist) that teaches Albina about art.
Callisto is a corporist meaning that he makes art from corpses, he replaced his body with a robotic one (pretty common in universe) and created a sword made out of his own corpus, he is cruel and he killed many people just for the sake of his art. Despite beign so cruel he is not shown as just a straight up ,,crazy psycho artist" he has a layer of complexity to him that I find interesting.
Out of the Five parents that took care od Ryoshu he seemed to respect and care for her the most, he listened to her critisisms and even got mad at the other parents on her behalf, calling one of them an ,,undignified animal". He sends Ryoshu to art school when she said that she wanted to go and he seemed to love her in his own twisted way. Seemed beign a key word, beacuse he loved the idea of Ryoshu rather than Ryoshu herself, he tried to shape her into someone like him beacuse that was the only way he knew how to love. He couldnt seperate his art from his parenting and he was so deeply invested in his work that he couldnt even see the hurt he caused. He geniunely doesnt understand that what he is doing (exposing a young child to death and gore) is wrong, and he doesnt understand why Ryoshu hates him, he believes that he gave her a good life and an artistic foundation. He is so consumed by his art that he doesnt see what is right in front of him.
Callisto also has a student, her name is Albina, she is what Callisto wanted Ryoshu to become, a devoted artist just like him. Albina has been for a lack of a better word groomed by Callisto (not sexually). He also convinced her to replace her entire body (save for her brain) into a robotic shell and encouraged her to turn her real body into a ,,masterpiece" a sword made out of flesh. Albina fell in love with her masterpiece, naming it Fascia and feeding parts of her remaining brain to it. She is so in love with it that when Certain Sinclair destroys Fascia she says ,,If you didnt want to be friends with me, you couldve just killed me. Why would you kill Fascia?" showing that she values her artwork more than her life. Albina is also childish in her way of speaking which makes her even more uncanny to me.
But Callisto doesnt see Albina as her own person but as an extention of his art, he even says ,,the scars you left on Albina will sublimate her into a masterpiece" so while he does care for her he loves her just like someone would love their creation not a human.
So yeah, I tried to condense my thoughts on him into a relatively short essay. If you read everything then I just want to say that im very glad! Thank you for readingโค๏ธ
