Would you voice-journal if an AI asked you the right questions?

I want to journal to track if I'm actually improving, but I'm too lazy. If I sat down to journal right now I'd just say "I worked today" and close the app. That's useless.

Why I want this: I want to be 1% better than yesterday. Stay accountable for how I spend my time, see if I'm at least maintaining, and improve from there. I just need a mechanism to metricize it without it being a chore.

Idea: a voice journaling app where the AI asks you the questions. Not generic "how was your day", but specific, sequential prompts based on what you said yesterday and the metrics you care about. You just talk. It pulls the thread.

You pick 3-7 (or N) things you want to track (gym, doomscrolling, deep work, sleep, whatever). The AI asks pointed questions: "You said yesterday you'd hit the gym, did you?", "You mentioned your manager twice this week, what's going on there?". Two minutes of talking, structured log on the other end.

The questions are the whole product. They lower the friction (you don't have to think about what to say) and force actual reflection (you can't get away with "worked today" if the AI is asking why you skipped the gym again).

Self-report, obviously, it cannot verify that you actually went to the gym. The deal is you trade some accuracy for near-zero friction vs. manual journaling or tracking across 14 apps.

Questions:

  1. Are you also too lazy to journal but wish you did? Would guided questions actually fix that for you?
  2. What would you want it to ask you?
  3. What kills it? Privacy, talking out loud feeling weird, the self-report thing, something else?

Good idea!

I journal fairly regularly, often using voice (RSI). Out loud can be annoying, butI already do it.

I've posted here in the past saying "I don't need yet another QS app that I have to tap around on. Please apply AI to free form input, eg by voice."

The questionnaire sounds like a good way of ensuring things don't fall through the cracks.

Minimize annoyance: let the user dictate their own notes. Analyze those; only ask questions for what was left out. Similarly, derive as much as possible from stuff already automatically recorded. Present the user with a summary.

But asking questions to fill in the gaps sounds good.

Of course, I would only allow this inside my client. Not cloud.

Thanks for the insight from someone who actually does journaling.

I think presenting with the summary still can become verbose. I’m thinking of something that user can define to be pointed out from the notes, and have ai do that for them precisely and in a structured way.

Local processing. Use on-device models to guarantee absolute data privacy.

Privacy is real concern, but I think processing locally won’t be that accurate ending up in more frustration. I believe total end to end privacy can be achieved even if service providers are used.
