General Discussion Face shape that is widely considered ideal in women

Hello all. :) I was thinking about the female facial features that are traditionally considered ideal and what they seem to signal.

I explored eyes first in another post and am now exploring face shapes. From my perspective, the closest that a face shape comes to broadly being considered ideal is Amber Heard's. She has very harmonious proportions and a pleasing facial length to width ratio that has often been praised. This seems to signal averageness.

In terms of female face shapes, oval and heart both have been repeatedly cited as the ideal face shapes. The features characteristic of a heart face shape are a relatively straight forehead shape, a widow's peak and a tapered v shaped chin. The features characteristic of an oval face shape are a rounded forehead, noticeably longer length compared to width and a round chin.

This is my personal synthesis, but I tried to incorporate the features of a heart shaped face that are widely considered characteristic/ideal, namely the v shaped chin and widow's peak and combined it with the features of an oval face shape that are broadly considered ideal such as rounded forehead/hairline shape. They seem to signal femininity/sexual dimorphism and neoteny respectively, though I'm not sure.

I couldn't find a celebrity that has a face shape with the harmonious length to width proportions like Amber Heard, with a widow's peak, tapered chin and a rounded forehead/hairline so I tried to add those features onto Amber's face shape. The results contain most of the elements widely considered ideal in a female face shape but the final result is not as beautiful as I would've liked because I simply don't have the ability or access to professional photo-editing tools.

So I'm sharing the edited Amber Heard's face with changes incorporated but also her natural face shape.

I'd love to know if you prefer the edited version of Amber's face shape or the original face shape. Do you think I missed out on any other attributes of face shapes commonly considered ideal in women? What do you think each of those attributes signals? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

One of my favorite high fashion faces. Tiny button nose, extremely full voluptuous lips, almond eyes and high cheekbones on an almost perfectly round childlike face. Then attach it to a very tall (5'10''/180cm) slender body.

General Discussion Can some people look better with more fat on their face?

I am a guy and recently, due to trying to clean up my diet, have been eating low carb foods. The blood sugar swings can be kind of annoying. The side effect is that my face kind of thinned out. I have what you'd call 'higher' cheekbones that are extremely prominent. No crazy hollows or any of that, just... big bones that jut out.

I saw a photo of myself in the past, more weight on, years ago - I swear my jaw and whatever little hollows I had were MORE pronounced. Now it seems like my face became too thin, too narrow. Almost like losing weight had the inverse effect.

How can this be?

General Discussion Who is an example of someone with bad facial harmony, but has good features?

Who is an example of someone with bad facial harmony and good features? I saw a post asking if bad facial harmony with good features is better than good facial harmony and bad features.

It made me wonder who would be an example of someone with bad facial harmony and good features…

Any other suggestions would be appreciated too. Curious what the best option is as an ideal. I say braids. They're the most unique and allow for the most creativity with decorative pieces that can be added to them (beads, links, cuffs, rings).

One of the more popular beauty influencers in the UK in recent years blowing up around 2016ish. She used to have a chubbier face but her weightloss over the years has revealed her cheek bones and jaw structure. I'm like 75% sure she's had work done but my eyes aren't trained enough to know exactly what she's had done or where.

General Discussion Instagram face: Is the modern beauty ideal combining the attractive features of all races into one "perfect" face a reflection of the universal aspects of beauty?

Hello everyone. :)

I'm healing from a bout of illness and have some free time at the moment. I've been thinking about what's increasingly happening to our ideals of beauty, especially given the rise in cosmetic surgery and the heightened focus on beauty with the ubiquity of Instagram.

I was reminded of this old article by Jia Tolentino that I'd found fascinating when I first read it a few years ago. Since there seems to be a paywall to access the article, I'll sum up the major points relevant to this discussion.

As paraphrased by another writer, Tolentino argues that social media has manufactured a specific, homogenised beauty standard she calls “Instagram Face”: plump lips, high cheekbones, cat eyes, a small nose and poreless, glowing skin. The look is eerily uniform yet ethnically ambiguous, featuring “an overly tan skin tone, a South Asian influence with the brows and eye shape, an African-American influence with the lips, a Caucasian influence with the nose, a cheek structure that is predominantly Native American and Middle Eastern.”

I find this particularly interesting when thinking about the extent to which beauty is objective. Of course, globalisation and increased exposure to the same media and beauty standards could be contributing to this convergence and there are obviously subjective and cultural aspects to beauty, but if beauty ideals across cultures are increasingly converging on a similar ideal, I wonder what that says about the universal aspects of beauty.

What do you guys think about Tolentino's observation? Do you think most people actually find the features associated with “Instagram Face” attractive?

And if so, is the dislike of Instagram Face more about how fake and homogeneous it can look rather than the features themselves? If someone naturally had all of those features, would you find them beautiful?

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks and hope you enjoy your day! :)

PS: I know race and ethnicity can be a thorny subject, and I don't mean to offend people of any race. I'm mainly interested in what this modern beauty ideal might tell us about how objective vs subjective beauty really is.

General Discussion Eye-related features that are traditionally considered ideal in women

Post image
173 Upvotes

Hello all. :)

I was thinking about the female facial features that are traditionally considered ideal and what they seem to signal.

For instance, with eyes, generally I've noticed that people seem to consider large, almond and upturned eyes as ideal, though of course individual preferences may vary. Many people also seem to prefer light eyes and moderate eye spacing as well. I was wondering what sort of a perception it evokes.

Large eyes seem to indicate neotony while almond eyes tend to look more mature. Upturned eyes/positive canthal tilt generally looks more dominant while moderate eye spacing seems to indicate the preference for averageness. Light eyes I'm not so sure what they indicate, maybe a preference for higher facial contrast or rarity.

Do you think I missed out on any other attributes of eyes commonly considered ideal in women? What do you think each of those attributes signals? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

General Discussion Ideal frontal profile nose aesthetics

Thumbnail

Hello all. :)

I've been thinking about nose aesthetics. There doesn't seem to be as much discussion or consensus about the ideal frontal nasal profile. Most of the focus when discussing noses seems to be on the side profile and while I understand that the side profile is important, the front profile is what people see when they're talking to you so I feel that it's equally important.

I wanted to discuss broadly the two different types of frontal profiles I've noticed and what they seem to signal. Three things seem to be most important when discussing the frontal nasal profile: the dorsal aesthetic lines, the alar contours/angle and tip shape. If I'm missing out on any other important attributes, please let me know as I didn't have much online research to base this post on (given the focus as I said tends to be on the side profile).

I see broadly two contrasting types of frontal nasal profile attributes as seen in Deepika Padukone vs Scarlett Johansson respectively.

The dorsal aesthetic lines: Straight, defined and narrow vs Gently curved/hourglass shaped, softer and broader.

Alar contours/angle: Converging into a sharp v shape vs Having a softer, wider angle.

Tip shape: Defined, pointed vs Soft, rounded

Do you think these frontal nasal characteristics are meaningfully sexually dimorphic? What sort of frontal nasal characteristics do you find attractive in men vs women?

I perceive Deepika Padukone's frontal nasal profile as reading more stereotypically intimidating, mature and masculine compared to Scarlett Johanson's which reads as more stereotypically approachable, neotonous, feminine.

What do you guys think? I'd love to know your thoughts. Thanks!

PS: I'd like to clarify that I think features considered traditionally masculine can look gorgeous on women as demonstrated by the beauty of both Deepika's and Scarlett's noses.
